“Kids liked holding the sea turtles”

Reviewed April 9, 2014

Kind of a run down place, but we went for the sea turtles and the hands on experience was worth it. The local guide seemed very knowledgeable and took his time to also show us the other tortoise exhibits there

if you are looking for a building or anything...this is literally just a pond where they hold all of the sea turtles that needs extra care. You will have an opportunity to pet the sea turtles and learn about them.

We visit every time we are in Zanzibar.
It's a very basic natural aquarium that educates and helps locals understand the importance of sea turtles. The aquarium has a great program with the local village community.

We were lucky to be part of the Turtle Release Day on Feb.20, 2014. The staff at the aquarium and some government officials make a whole day full of education and celebration followed by the actual release of the turtles back into the Indian Ocean.

I would recommend to anyone to go there, see what your $5 entrance does, see and feed some turtles but try to be in Zanzibar during the release. One of the more satisfying conservation projects you can be involved with in one day.

the sanctuary looks nice and entrance is cheap. Your payment contributes the preservation of the turtles. They also have giant lizards in a cage. We did not like that because it has nothing to do with the sanctuary and is not animalfriendly. A better option to help the people of Nungwi is to make a reservation next door for the village walk. This private walk is very interesting and contributes the income of the poor people of Nungwi.
