Hotel has lovely location. Staff are very courteous and will try to accommodate any request that you make. All in all a very nice hotel. Now the niggles. The beach seemed to have a seaweed problem, and the breakfast selection was very limited. These were minor issues but did not stop us from enjoying our holiday.

Nice hotel for the area. The drive into it is very odd. The great thing about this hotel is that there is a massive strip of local restaurants. It is not Hilton London standard but they attempted. Good sheets and flowers on the pillow etc. We didn't have dinner in the hotel as there were many places a short walk across the beach for £3.50 fresh tuna and rice. The pool is very small. All in I would recomend. There are much cheaper options a few steps away but breakfast was excellent. Diving trips massage etc can be sorted on the beach. $15 for a sunset dhow cruise. 2 people. Diving is average. Good for snorkel peeps. One word of warning is that you need to be safe walking home early hours on the beach. There is a mix of people and crime is not unknown. We had no problems mind.

I was excited about staying at the Doubletree Hilton having seen pictures and generally having expectations about the quality and high standards we would enjoy. However, we discovered early on that the hotel had only recently become a Hilton hotel and the exceptionally young and inexperienced manager there had no idea how to run a hotel and treated his staff particularly badly. He seemed to take pleasure in telling them off and threatening to dismiss them in front of guests. The staff looked really unhappy which meant there was a generally unpleasant and tense atmosphere in the resort.

This hotel has a long way to go before it should call itself a Hilton - broken toilet seats, cold showers, pool with no water and really bad quality food in the restaurant (but really expensive for some reason).

The location of the hotel is great but it's such a shame that the hotel is so badly run.

Thank you to the team who gave us a great memeorable trip to Zanzibar. We hope to see you again in December where we really enjoy more of Africa. We are currently at the world cup but still wishing we were on the beach at Hilton. The food was good, pizzas are great!

My wedding is on the horizon and Doubletree would be most ideal, hopefully JUNE 2011!

We almost got arrested with a rented motorcycle we hired from the local village by the police but Shafeen helped us alot and liased with the inspectors. Thank you Ruth and thanks to the Bell Boys!

We hope to see you soon and we shall keep in touch, great team!

Good hotel with friendly staff. Booked this hotel online through Hilton.com, was very reasonable. By far the best rooms on the Island, no offence to other hotels. Will be a popular place in the near future. Unfortunately, no GM was at the property through out our stay, however management were helpful in the absence. The beach is better than average and the management even convinced us to take a boat during the sunset. A nice feeling about this resort. Food was OK.

Imagine the scene: 3 a.m in Nungwi and 4 female guests being told by the rudest receptionist and inexperienced new management to "either pay an additional $400 for the rooms or leave".

We had stayed for 3 nights at the Hilton, already spent over $1,000 and had decided to book another 3 nights stay through the website ‘laterooms.com’. After a 5 hour discussion as to whether the Hilton could release our room keys based on our internet booking, the receptionist, who at midnight turned around and said she had enough and was going to bed (at least she had that luxury), finally informed us that the issue was our booking reference number did not begin with the number 3 – “Sorry sisters, please leave”. Head of operations did nothing other than say “it's not right for you to be on the streets at this time in Africa, you can afford $200 each surely? Just pay, I want to sleep with a clear conscious tonight”. Surely the 22 year old new general manager, straight out from business school into daddy’s hotel, could see this was unacceptable?? “Absolutely, that’s why in a 100-room hotel with no guests but the four of you, I’m giving you the option of ‘pay me right now or leave at 3am (rather than sensibly resolving the issue with the bookings the next day) and, while I’m at it, let me lock you in the hotel and get security out to intimidate my female guests.”

Yes, the beach front was spectacular (not that the manager would have known, he doesn’t “do the sea”, nor does he "do Africa") and the rest of the local staff were very friendly, despite the disrespectful and condescending way they were spoken to by management, but being thrown out of your hotel in Africa in the middle of the night, with no alternatives, is just unacceptable. The Hilton should take responsibility for negligently employing such inexperienced and disrespectful staff to run a family hotel. They failed to provide a minimal level of duty of care towards its guests.

If you want a safe and relaxing holiday we would warn you NOT TO BOOK this hotel.

Book The Zanzibari Hotel instead, 1st class hotel on every front.
