We left Stone town early only to find check in wasn't until 2pm. Saying that we were made welcome the room was turned around and we got in early(thank you Mohammed)
The room was huge; we have stayed in rooms that were the size of the bathroom! spotlessly clean and was kept that way (thank you Fatima)
Public areas and grounds were well kept and you can find your own space around the various fabulous pools.
Dining, buffet style with lots of choice at each meal time and good quality.
ALL the staff are super friendly, hard working and helpful.
Special mention to Ramadan who helped keep us rehydrated with water and Zanzibar fruit punch.
Brenda used the spa and Grace delivered what was described as an invigorating massage and was thoroughly enjoyed.
We had the pleasure of meeting the General manager Kim Bird who is genuinely interested that you have an excellent stay and a great experience. (She is also very entertaining)
All in all a great place to relax enjoy the sun and kick back.

Room Tip: If leaving from Stone town take in a tour or just explore it yourself for a while before heading up...

Dear Brenda and John,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We're thrilled to know that you enjoyed your stay so much and will happily share your comments with the team, particularly Mohammed, Fatima and Ramadan and Grace. I know they'll be pleased to hear that they helped make your stay so special. Thank you from me as well, I've been called many things in my time, entertaining hasn't been one of them! What a nice thing to say, although I think I had just as much fun speaking with you.

We continue to work on the situation with the beach boys. We appreciate your understanding that by law, it's public property and I'm glad that they didn't deter you from using the beach.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. We hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind regards,

A week is not nearly enough in this beautiful place! Kim, the GM and her incredible staff were on hand to make us feel welcome and pampered all day and night. A perfect location; large rooms and bathrooms, situated within magnificent gardens and swimming pools (5 of them!) all looking onto the turquoise Indian ocean. Can't wait to go back!

My Husband and I have just returned from a weeks stay here for our 1st Anniversary. After a long trip to get to Zanzibar we were both amazed by this place. What a setting. The hotel is immaculate and the staff were wonderful. The hotel is set right on the Indian Ocean and once you have fended of the beach Boys who try and sell you stuff the sea was lovely! (Don't let them put you off going into the sea!)

The weather was lovely - 38 degrees some days, so if you love the sun, go Dec / Jan time.

The staff make sure the place is spot less. The room was huge with a equally huge bathroom, equipped with a 2 person bath (very novel!!)

Food was a little repetitive but plenty of it. The Zanzibar way of life is "pole pole" which means slowly slowly, which is great for a holiday but this became a problem on the night time in the bar with only one barman on and 100 Italians wanting drinks at the same time. There is nothing outside the hotel, restaurant wise, but you shouldn't really venture outside the hotel walls due to safety.

The entertainment / activities boys were great fun - especially Saleem, Salum and Ali. The holiday was much better having a great activity team there.

We will be returning again in the future but will return for 2 weeks next time.

If you fly Precision Air - be prepared to walk away from the airport with out your bag. Its a regular thing for it to be left in Kenya and it normally turns up 24hrs later. Also, something most holiday companies don't tell you about, you have to pay ANOTHER tax to leave Zanzibar - $48 - so once you have paid for your visas, you still have to pay to leave.

Other than that, fab place!!!

Room Tip: we had room K-22 which had a great view of the sea and complex.

We're delighted to hear that you had such a great time with us and will be sure to share your comments with our team, particularly Saleem, Salum and Ali. The team loves knowing that they had such a positive impact.

I am sorry to hear about the single bartender in the Mpenzi Bar, we'll take steps to ensure that the scheduling offers better coverage in the evenings. Pole pole or not, after a long day in the sun, no one wants to wait too long for a cold drink!

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi, we're looking forward to welcoming you back for your planned two week visit!

Stayed for 5 nights in an upper-floor corner room. Immaculate, well-maintained resort has great pool and lounge features. Perfectly situated in Nungwi, away from the hustle and bustle of Stone Town, on a white sand beach overlooking Indian Ocean (location was great for sunsets and stargazing). Rooms are huge. Food was ordinary but tasty. I particularly enjoyed the theme nights (e.g. Maasai Market night, Garden dinner party, etc.) that added variety to the all-inclusive dining experience. What really sets this resort apart is the friendly and hard-working staff: they may not all speak English fluently, but everyone was always warm and inviting (and very patient with my limited Swahili!). All of the staff went to great lengths to satisfy every possible request, and by day 2 most of them knew me by name.
Special thanks to Wema the Bar Trainee, Benard the bartender, Ndoipo the Maasai guard, Maria in Housekeeping, Margareth the Head Waitress, and Omar Al-Bashir the sales rep for East Africa Divers. Beach boys were always there, but they never bothered you if you stayed on the resort property. I can only think of two things that would have made my stay more enjoyable: (1) better wifi reception in-room and on the beach and (2) if there's some way to control the incessant flies that constantly circle and land on your food as you eat a meal (sometimes, I hurried through a meal because they were so bothersome). Overall, a memorable and relaxing stay.

Room Tip: All rooms are angled to have some sort of ocean / garden view but suggest choosing an upper floor c...

Thank you so much for your terrific review of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort and for the wonderful photos!

We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us so much and will very happily pass on your lovely remarks to Wema, Ndoipo, Maria, Margareth and Omar. I know that they'll be delighted to have been remembered so well.

I'm sorry that you found spots where the wifi wasn't as good. We continue to work on it to ensure better coverage and hope that eventually it will be smooth all over the resort. I'm also sorry about the flies. Unfortunately after heavy rains, they come out for only a few days and then disappear again. We continue to try to find ways to eliminate this most annoying problem, but so far can only be grateful that they are here for only a brief time and are nowhere to be found in the evenings.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. Although San Francisco is a long way away, we hope to be able to welcome you back again in the near future.

My wife and I stayed here on our homeymoon for 10 nights.
We were of course expecting great things having paid a lot of money for our suite and were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, and throughout our whole stay, everything was just perfect. The location will just blow you away, with stunning grounds and amazing views of the Indian Ocean.
We were lucky enough to have a room overlooking the beach but also used another room on our final day which, though smaller than our suite, was still excellently presented and big enough for all your needs
The facilities available give you all you need during your stay. A variety of pools means you can be as close to or as far away from the action as you like, we spent a couple of days with a pool to ourselves and though the hotel was fully booked you would have though there was no-one else there! There are many bars, meaning you never have to go far for a drink, with a good choice of beers, cocktails and soft drinks available. The 2 restaurants provide an exceptional variety of delicious food, with many local dishes on offer but also some more standard options for the less adventurous eaters. The animations team are always around to ensure you're enjoying your stay, offering numerous ways to keep yourself busy (volley ball, aqua airobics, etc) but they don't hassle you to get involved if you'd rather just relax on a lounger with your book.
Though all the staff were wonderful I'd just like to mention a few who we thought were amazingly friendly and helpful, they really helped make our stay an unforgetable experience.
Salim & Said - Animations Team, so friendly and great fun.
Ali - Beach barman, really knows how to make a cocktail!
Rugegwa - Trainee barman but has nothing more to learn, surely promotion beckons!
Bakari & Asha - fabulous waiters, providing exceptional service
Jesca - Cleaner, so friendly and made some beautiful creations with towels and flowers on our bed every day.
Khamis - Chef, a truely happy smiley man who loves his job and ensures all his customers are satified with their food, which was always delicious.

I never go to the same location more than once for a holiday (there are just too many places to see in the world) but may consider returning to Zanzibar just to stay at this amazing hotel again. Would easily recommend this resort to anyone thinking of going to Zanzibar.

We stayed at Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for 7 nights in the beginning of December 2013 for our honeymoon. Herewith a short summary of the pro's and con's of our stay.

Pro's
- Great scene and setting! It really is as beautiful as the pictures show! The garden is beautiful and well maintained. The ocean views from the resort is breath-taking.
- Huge Rooms, well decorated and more than adequate for our needs.
- Bathroom is huge, the double-bathtub is amazing. Great for taking a cold bath to soothe the sunburn.
- Room was cleaned every day and always while we were away during our Breakfast/Dinner. we hardly noticed the cleaning staff, but appreciate their hard work
- Air-conditioning worked extremely well. (Thank goodness for that)
- All Hotel staff is very friendly and will always greet you.
- All inclusive package and a "no cash payment to staff" policy works very well.
- Pools are beautiful and well maintained.
- Food & Drink always available and ready in reasonable times.
- Paddleboats, Canoe's and sports animation teams make sure you always have something to do other than relax.

Con's
- Language issue. Some staff hardly understand English, I once received an espresso when I ordered a Sprite soft drink. Not a problem, just an inconvenience. as it is always corrected once understood.
- Some distance away from the most popular excursions, an hour or so drive to the Airport
- Pool times do not allow for a night swim, but you can still take the dip in the ocean.
- If you are not Italian, you are the minority.
- Some buffet items disappear quickly and are not refilled. We missed out on waffles quite a few times.

We did not make use of room service or the spa, hence we can not rate them.

In summary, a great resort, perhaps the best in Zanzibar. Great value for money, great service and perhaps the best location if you don't mind a drive to see some countryside. Staff will go the extra mile for you, just be clear with your requests.

Thank you Royal Zanzibar for making our Honeymoon a dream come true!

Thank you very much for your wonderful review and kind recommendation of Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your honeymoon so much and agree that our setting is truly beautiful! We were also pleased with your remarks regarding our staff, they are encouraged to do everything they can to ensure our guests have a wonderful stay and it's always nice to hear that they're succeeding.

We are sorry that the language was an issue at times. Unfortunately English still isn't taught in school in Zanzibar and finding local staff with exceptional English skills remains a challenge. We continue to try to ensure we hire well and keep reminding our management and supervisory team to use English only to try to improve both comprehension and spoken English, but this is something we obviously will have to constantly work at. I was also sorry to hear about the buffet items, particularly waffles disappearing before you arrived and not being refilled. I will follow up as in the case of the waffles there should have been a Cook there, making them fresh for you and the other dishes should all be refilled until the buffet is closed.

Thank you once again for choosing Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi. We offer our warmest congratulations and look forward to welcoming you back, perhaps for an anniversary?
