“Thank you for the perfect holiday”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

After our long flight, the welcome at Royal Zanzibar was just what we needed. The view from the reception, breathtaking and only got better as we walked through the gardens to get to our room. The room was huge and very well decorated. The bathroom: Wow.

During our week stay, the hotel was very busy, probably full, but you always found your quiet corner, if thats what you wanted. Most of the animation was by the beach bar and the beach voleyball in the evenings was great fun.

We had meals both at Speices and Samaki. Compliments to Chef Alex and Franco for the excellent meals. The best part of our dinning experience was the beach party. What a set up. This is a must for all visiting Royal and its at no extra cost. The one thing we missed out on, and have to experience next time, is the romantic lobster diner for two on the beach.

We had a superb holiday at Royal Zanzibar and will return soon. For all those visiting Zanzibar, I would also reccomend the Dolphin Safari (a must) and the Jozani forest if you have some time.

Thank you to the Royal team.

Room Tip: K block was excellent.

My husband and I stayed here for five nights on our Honeymoon after we had been on safari. The rooms are nice, not particularly luxurious but tasteful, comfortable, clean and spacious – our room had the largest bathroom and bath I have ever seen. We were all-inclusive and were very happy with the food and drink options available, the pasta and pizza particularly were delicious. Most of the staff are very friendly and helpful, however service is somewhat inconsistent and it can be difficult to get new cutlery or order drinks depending on which waiting staff are about. Service can also be a little slow at the bar directly after dinner when it gets very busy. The lounge area is nicely decorated and there is free wi-fi which was appreciated. The beach and pool area are good but there was loud Europop playing which was not our thing at all as we had come to relax.

Something to be aware of with regard to this hotel is that almost all the guests are Italian and service is very much is geared towards them. As there is are Italian travel reps on site it can feel somewhat that everyone else’s requirements are secondary.

One problem when we arrived was that there was no TV signal. This could not be helped but even after the required part arrived at the hotel we did not have a good signal in our room by our departure. This would not be a big deal normally but the weather was terrible for most of our stay so a bit of TV in the room would have been welcome.

On the first morning when it was pouring we discovered we had no umbrella in our room so we would have been drenched getting to breakfast. We rang reception only to be told there were no umbrellas. On arriving at breakfast we discovered everyone else seemed to have one and a fellow guest told us they had one in the room. This made me cross partially as later I was able to get an umbrella from reception. Also we rang from our room to reception to ask them to contact the tour company who were taking us to Stonetown to make sure they were still coming. I was then told by reception that before they would call for me I would have to come to reception (through the heavy downpour) to sign for the cost of the call. I was really not happy about this. Particularly bearing in mind we had booked the tour via a company advertised in the hotel.

Also be aware when having a massage that although the treatment list says a 60 minute massage what we actually ended up with was 45 minutes and 5 minutes to “relax” i.e. lying on our backs. I enjoyed my massage although my husband did not , however it should be clear that the massage is only 45 minutes and 15 minutes getting dress/undressed and waiting around. Also it was 10 minutes late starting and when we arrived there was no one there to greet us. I was concerned we had got the time or day wrong.

We did have a good holiday but I did not feel particularly “special” here on my Honeymoon. The hotel is more suited for families with children. I also noticed that when we were leaving some other guests were arriving who were also probably on their Honeymoon, they were treated to a full on Massai welcome dance, welcome drink and flowers spelling out their name. We got none of this although we did get a bottle of wine in the room (we are all inclusive so this wasn't really needed). On departure were not even asked if we enjoyed our stay or wished a pleasant flight.

I would not return here again or recommend it which is a shame as it could be such a lovely hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed the room and the food and beverage. It was a pleasure to share with the kitchen team that you thought the pasta and pizza were delicious.

I hope that you will understand that we were doing everything we could to repair the situation with the television signal, but parts and skilled labour for specialized problems like this are not always readily available on the island. Once we brought the part we thought was necessary for the repairs over from Kenya, it turned out the problem was more complex and a technician also had to be brought in from the mainland to assist.

We appreciate you bringing to our attention the slow service in the bar after dinner. We have made a small change to the schedule that will place one more waiter in there at that time to ensure that the service does not slow down.

I was very disappointed to hear of the more serious problems that you encountered with the reception and spa. I have spoken with each of the department heads and agreed that we need to do much better in each of their areas than we did during your visit. There is simply no excuse for making you walk through the rain to make a phone call, nor to make you wait for a massage or short change you on the length of it. We have taken your comments very seriously and made changes to some of our internal procedures to ensure we do better in the future.

I hope that you will accept our sincere apologies for these problems. We truly want every guest, especially our honeymooners, to have a memorable and relaxing stay and are disappointed when we fail in this goal.

Should you be returning to Zanzibar, please feel free to contact me directly. We would be pleased to welcome you back for what we trust would be a much better experience.

Kind regards,

The hotel is set in the most beautiful well kept garden. There are four pools non of which get very crowded with fresh beach towels daily. The rooms are enormous and spotless with a balcony overlooking the garden, pool or sea. The shower was also enormous and there's a double bath if you want a bit of romance! The food was very good, in the main restaurant or beach bar....try the pizzas. The thing that makes this hotel is the staff. They are always friendly and smiling and welcome you like old friends when they see you.
The only downside of the hotel is the amount of Italiens that get there. They arrive on mass and tend to dominate activities and the restaurant. We would recommend this hotel for a luxury break.

Thank you so much for your lovely review of the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

It was a pleasure to have you staying with us and even better hear that you enjoyed your visit so much. We have shared your kind words with the entire team, the Gardeners were particularly pleased to hear that you enjoyed their efforts in the gardens.

We apologise for not yet finding the right balance between our Italian guests and our other guests. We continue working towards ensuring that the activities are inclusive for all languages and nationalities, or offering parallel activities in other languages but it's clear from a couple of the recent comments that we're not there yet. I assure you that we will continue to strive to ensure that no one feels that another group overwhelms any part of the resort.

Thank you once again for choosing the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort for your stay in Nungwi, we hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back again in the near future!

We spent 4 days at the hotel before our Safari-trip. The beach is absolutely amazing, swimming is possible at all time. The pools are breathtaking and the rooms are huge and clean. All of the staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. I can fully recommend the hotel and I would love to come back!

Since we landed in Zanzibar evrything became an unforgettable experience. The confusion of bicycles and motorcycles that run along the roads seeming every moment that will strike against us, the sale of exotic fruit evrywhere and finally the arriving at the hotel ...
beautiful gardens, a space that seems removed from the arabian nights ... the constant smile of their employees with "Jambo", "Hakuna Matata" and "Pole pole".
Excellent facilities, fabulous food ...The vew, the beach, the activities... everything and everybody excelent.
Fantastic stay and an experience to repeat and remember.

The Resort looks like paradise! The best place to relax after a safari on the mainland.
We were there just before the season started (last week of july), so it was very quite (we really liked that).
The rooms are beautyfull! Very clean, a kingsized bed (only a bit to hard), big closet with a free safe and very big bathroom with a double bath!!! The rooms also have a terrace and we looked out at the swimming pools and the ocean.
In the mornings and the afternoons we stayed at the beach. The sunbeds are good and you can get free towels. Its great to go out snorkeling in the morning. You can see lobster, squid, pufferfish, starfish and all kind of other colourfull fishes. Watch out for sea-urchins and jellyfish!
We also went out diving. At the beach of the hotel it's pretty expensive, but wenn you ask Marco Polo (captain of the Tata - he always hangs around at the beach in front of the hotel) then he will bring you to another PADI divecentre, were it's much cheaper.
I can also recommend to take a massage at the hotel by Winnie. You will feel reborn!
Every day around 5 o' clock in the afternoon we "hang around" in the swinging chair at the Coco bar. We always enjoyed the sunset. We've also seen dolphins coming by during the sunset, nearby the coast. Fantastic! The bartender at the Coco bar is Mbarack. It's a very friendly guy and a good bartender. He makes delicious Mojito's! He remembers you and likes to make a chat with you. We can recommend to order a pizza and a hamburger at the Coco bar.
The buffet in the main restaurant is good: all kinds of pasta's á la minute, eggs (just the way you want it), rice, fresh fruits, all kinds of bread, and much, much more!
We're from Holland and one of the executives chefs is Dutch (Alex). At the beach we saw that you can have a lobster dinner. He arranged that for us. It was the most romantic dinner we've ever had and will have! They made a bed of cushions at the beach with a low table in front of it. We were there all alone at the beach, with a beautifully started sky! Haji (waiter from the Coco bar) served the food and the wine. He did a excellent job! Christopher (chef de parti) prepared the dinner for us. It all was very tasty (the starter, the soup, the lobster, the dessert). I still get water in my mouth just by thinking of it. We've never seen such a big lobster! We've had lobster before, but never so good as Christopher prepared for us. It was so amazing delicious! Thanks to Christopher, Haji and Alex we've had a unforgatable dinner and evening!

From the moment I arrived, the attention to my needs was faultless. Staff were always smiling and made everyone feel at home. Rooms impecably clean and very well appointed. Food was great and in abundance. Activities were many and well supported. This is the place to stay in Zanzibar. I aslo stayed at Dream of Zanzibar this trip however Royal Zanzibar outpaced it in all aspects. For those who have not been to Zanzibar I recomend the Nth East caost as the beaches and activities are far better than the West coast. For example, you can take a boat trip litterally from your doorstep as the boats are nearby as opposed to West coast where you need to travel to the boating area.
