We made the journey to Ant's Hill from Cape Town. The reservation office pre-arranged the pleasant 3-hour transfer from ORT airport without any hitches. The informal yet professional ambience that pervades everything from the horse-riding to the meals was apparent from the minute we arrived and felt like personal guests having cocktails and chatting around the bar.

I am not sure how they manage to pull it off so expertly and without fuss, but both of us (one absolute beginner and one experienced rider) were both catered for on our wonderful rides. Each guide has their own style resulting in rides that varied from the quiet and tranquil to the very informative and chatty. The variety was part of the experience. Our horses were well-suited to our abilities and perfectly selected. The saddles which I was told are locally made for safaris were comfortable and just right for the job. A number of activities were available including mountain bike riding and game drives but we just couldn't drop a single opportunity to go out on horseback so we never tried any other activity.

The standard of the meals has been commented upon by a number of guests and I can only say that each meal seemed to have been prepared with very careful attention to detail and quality and there was a pride and personal touch when the chef would tell us what was on the menu. Catering for each person's particular taste was never an inconvenience.

Accommodation was comfortable and the Hideaway suite we had was an open-plan style with its own pool.

Finally I need to comment on the staff. Purposely I have not mentioned a single name because I can honestly say that every single member of staff, whether they were from housekeeping or administration and management, or whether they were guides, waiters, or chefs, they were all friendly, professional and always helpful. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We'll certainly be back!

This time 2 weeks ago we were privileged to be sharing a conservation experience of a lifetime - a game capture and release of 5 bull Kudoos on Ant's property in the Waterberg. It was the crowning experience of an amazing week in the mesmerizing South African bush. Treated to the genuine hospitality of staff who make it their job to welcome you and share the delights of their country and their passion for the environment and its wildlife. Added to this the blissful comfort of luxury lodges, great food and superb horse riding opportunity to suit all levels of experience. Skilled horsemen and women with a real love and commitment of the horses, ride out with you amongst wild game in the quiet of early morning and near dusk. Bespoke rides, game drives bush lunches - everything to sooth the senses. Not so much a holiday, as a life experience.
As seasoned travellers it was a holiday of a lifetime; special thanks to all our hosts at the Hill and the Nest but particularly to Merlin Naomi Lerou and Penny at the Hill; Fred Jaques Sulene AJ Moses and Sam at the Nest. Finally and not least to Ant for his genuine hospitality and welcome. Exemplar service from initial enquiry (Amelia thank you) to our departure. We will return.

Room Tip: worlds view at the Hill -

We stayed at Ant's Hill for 4 nights after Rose from Africa Rose Travel recommended this lodge. We had the best time ever. Our dreams came true, riding 5 hours every day, meeting with amazing staff and guests and enjoyed wonderful home cooked meals. The lodge itself was outstanding, fantastic views, great service. We don't have a single negative thing to mention. We will come back as soon as we can! Special thanks to all the guides!

This amazing experience is impossible to adequately describe. You have to experience it to understand.

The lodges are luxurious and in secluded settings with complete privacy, The main lodge contains a large, comfortable lounge area, a help yourself bar, a dining room and an outside lounge area. There is another outside dining deck and a dining area near the outside heated pool which has a large open fire area. There are loungers and chairs by the pool. In the rainy season a large waterfall feeds a waterhole under the outside dining deck. Game can be seen from the deck at any time of the year.

My wife and I stayed in Hideaway (Honeymoon 2) which is built into a rock face. It has a large sunken bath and a shower carved out of the rock. It also has an outside shower carved out of the rock. Bath and shower toiletries are provided and there is a hair dryer. A travel adapter s also provided. The room has tea and coffee facilities and a free mini bar. The bedroom is spacious with a 7' x 7' four poster bed with mosquito nets. There is no malaria in the area but you can still get bitten. All rooms have fold back glass doors along one side. Outside is a large covered verandah with a large sofa, table and chairs which leads to steps to a small garden and small swimming pool with a double sunbed. The view is stunning.

The riding is scaled to suit the riders. The horses are in very good good condition and fit. There are horses and ponies to suit all abilities from absolute beginners to very competent riders. Although they ask about individual riding abilities, they under-horse guests on their first ride and assess abilities before allocating more active horses. The first horse that I had was vary steady but I had a much more active horse for the second ride and rode two more horses of similar temperament. The last three horses (Kalahari, Rufus and Turks) were forward going and active but quite controllable, Wonderful horses. Two guides accompany every ride, one at the front and one at the back, even if there is only one guest riding. The maximum number of guests on each ride is six but often it is less. Rides go out each morning and late afternoon and range from 1.5 hours to 3 hours. The type of ride and duration is discussed with each guest at dinner (morning ride) and lunch (afternoon ride). You can choose from a slow walking ride to a fast cantering ride. The saddles are mainly Mcclellan saddles (a comfortable saddle which is a cross between Western and European) but there are a few European saddles. The horses are turned out with the game and are therefore very comfortable around game.

There are also the options of game drives, night game drives. mountain biking and hiking.

There are three chefs who turn out amazing dishes meal after meal. The food is varied but it is a set menu. If you have a particular dislike or allergy then they will cook an alternative for you. The breakfast is buffet style continental but you can order a cooked breakfast the night before.

There is a small shop on site with quality merchandise and a selection of essential items.
The big factor at Ants Hill is the staff. They do everything possible to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable and always have a smile on their faces.

The transfer from the airport is about 3 hours but is in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle.

We have been on riding safaris before and thought that they were very good but this one is just amazing. You have to experience it to appreciate how good it is. Outstanding.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are excellent with amazing views but Hideaway (honeymoon 2) is my favorite.
