Owner description: Welcome to Wanaka's wonderful world of weirdness! Puzzling World has been messing with people's heads since 1973. Bizarre buildings, rooms of illusions and our famous maze will baffle your brain and challenge your perceptions of reality. Even if you only pay a visit to New Zealand's most unusual public toilets, your world will never be the same again. Seeing is disbelieving!

The entry fee is $15 per adult. There are two 'sections' - the illusion rooms and the maze. Most of the illusions I had seen before, though the Hall of Faces was impressive. The maze is outdoors and is on two levels. It entertained us (two 20-somethings) enough and we completed the challenge of finding all four corners but if I had the choice again I wouldn't do it. It was a fine day and there is enough else to see and do in the area.

Hi Claire,

Thanks for your review. While I'm glad you've used the terms "novelty", "impressive" and "entertaining" for you review it's a shame you would'nt repeat your visit.

We have many "world's first" claims at our business but, as we are nearly 40 years old, in this time copy-cat ventures have sprung up meaning some of the Illusions may have been seen elsewhere. Another reason for our new extension (Dec 2012) - more cool, unique stuff!!!

Kind regards

Traveling with a kid you're often stuck going to things that make the kid happy, and bore the hell out of the rest of the family. Puzzling World wasn't like that. There maze alone was heaps of fun to get lost in and the optical illusion rooms inside were tons of fun as well.

Do not do this with your partner as it will end in arguments!! The maze is about 1.6km (?) of confusing passage ways. We decided to do the 4 corners in order. Its was quite confusing and really well done. It took us an hour to do the 4 corners in order....so not a bad time i reckon!! The other rooms are interesting and the whole site kept us entertained for over an hour. I recommend stopping here if you like a good challenge.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your great review.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the clever maze design and congratulate you on your persistence with the hard challenge. We had a marriage proposal planned by a customer doing this challenge on friday night - gee I hope it went OK!?

We hope to see you again at Puzzling World!

As we were driving through Wanaka, we came across this attraction seeing the leaning and tumbling towers and my wife wanted to visit it. I was feeling apprehensive about it firstly but still go ahead with it. Well it proved to be a good decision!

We started with The Great Maze. There are 4 corners to reach, each identified by different colours of red, green, blue and yellow. Now how often do you get to play in a real maze? We mostly played those on paper with fingers. This real maze appears easy but it isn't. It tests our memory on which way we have gone through and we have to remember the confusing routes. Each time we walked up to the higher bridges, we'll scan the maze and try to pinpoint the route to the corner we are trying to reach.

The maze took us quite a while to complete and after that we decided to visit the toilets. What a interesting surprise it was as we come to this big Roman-style toilet in the common area which feature Roman-style ablutions with a nicely painted mural. It's a place for taking some funny shots!

The Hologram Hall is next, with many rather interesting 3D holograms to view. We proceeded to the Hall of Following Faces and this is a good one. Somehow in this hall, whichever position you are standing at, the faces all appear to be looking straight at you! They actually are following you are you move about, in a variety of expressions! Rather creepy I would say!

At the Tilted House, it appeared to be a normal looking house, except that it is tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. Because everything looked normal, your mind would tell you it is but due to the angle, you will struggle to balance yourself. We got get to see some rather impossible stuff like water that flows uphill, pool balls that moves towards a corner no matter what etc, all because of the tilted angle!

Lastly at the Ames Room, which is what they called the Forced Perception Room, we walked from left and we appeared big, head touching the ceiling but towards the right, we shrank and looked small. It's all an illusion that was so well executed that anyone standing outside to see, the room appears normal. (see attached photos)

At the outside area before entering the above paid areas, there's a Puzzle Centre that you can get your hands on some intriguing puzzles on the tables.

Finally at the gift shop, if you can't get enough of Puzzling World, they have quite some nice puzzles, games and other mementos you can purchase to take home.

This place has proven to be really fun and intriguing for us. After all, we didn't plan to visit this place as we were driving through Wanaka but it was one attraction that we enjoyed. If you're here, don't miss it! :)

This turned out to be great way to spend a cold afternoon. We took the kids(aged 15 and 12) and all of us had great fun. The maze was challenging for all of us with some healthy "discussion" on which way to go and by the time we had completed it we were all warmed up. It is sheltered from the wind so cold days are no bother. Indoors has some great mind bending rooms and the cafe area has loads of free puzzles for all ages to try and complete. Would recommend this to all ages.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your awesome review.

I'm glad we could offer you some joy on a wintery spring (?) day, it seems the whole family got involved with "healthy discussions" and" bended minds" being the order of the day!

Thanks again, we look forward to seeing you back at Puzzling World!
