“Oakridge-- a little underwhelming”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

Having stayed in mainly motels during our trip, my dad and I thought Oakridge might be the right place to indulge. Turns out, we might have done just as good (if not a little better) at a motel. Yes, the beds were comfy but the first room they gave us hadn't been cleaned yet and they almost couldn't find us another. They gave us complimentary drinks (which they tried to charge us for at check out) and the bartender was incredibly nice and let us in on some of New Zealand's best kept secrets. However, the food was terrible (nothing was actually hot at the breakfast buffet and the eggs were pretty much floating in water) and they didn't give us new towels the next day. I'm not usually a snot, but if you're paying the extra money to stay at a nice resort, you should expect exceptional service which Oakridge failed to provide.

Arrived here very tired after a great day on the glacier at Fox. Needed a good sleep and some great food and it did not disappoint. The room was fairly small but it was very clean and service was excellent. there was no hair dryer in the room but that was quickly rectified. Price for the night was very good. Breathe of fresh air.

We found some great rates for this hotel on the internet and it was completely worth it! We were skiing at Cardrona and it was only a 15min drive away, and only 5min from the centre of Wanaka.
The rooms were comfy and warm and the parking just outside was great.
The food was expensive so we ate out in Wanaka most nights - the Red Star burger place is a must try!! Biggest best burgers ever!
The hot pools were to die for, especially after a days skiing. Hours were spent in comfort, soooo good!
Overall a great option, would definitely stay there again!

We stayed for 1 night, enroute to Queenstown. The hotel has been fantastically designed and looks good.

Key however is to get a lake facing room. Do not take a road facing room, the whole charm of booking the hotel goes for a toss.

Room size is ok - could have been better. Bed was good. Bathroom was spacious enough. Infact, its not a recommended stay for just 1 night. Wanaka is a nice town to laze around. If one were to stay for atleast 2 nights, this is a good property.

One big negative of this property is location - which is very hard to find. Since its a little high on the hill, those not having their own vehicle would find it difficult.

Also, it took us almost an hour to spot the hotel, despite having a GPS in our car and asking people around.

Neverhless, a good property.

We stayed at the Oakridge Grand Mercure for 2 nights and were very impressed with everything! We were a little apprehensive prior to our stay due to a very average stay at the Mercure in Queenstown but we need not have worried. These two properties are chalk and cheese!

First of all the Hotel is well staffed. There were always staff available to look after us and they were all very friendly and courteous. The property is beautiful and the hot pools fantastic after a long day. The public areas were great, log fire places and candles created a nice atmosphere.

The food was also of a very high standard.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the Oakridge.

Stayed for three nights at this hotel as part of a three week south island tour of New Zealand in April 2010.

Booked on the Accor website for a studio with cooking facilities and washing machine, dryer etc. However, when we checked in at the hotel we were given keys for a standard room without kitchen facilities, etc. When we informed at the reception that we had already paid for a higher category room, they argued and tried their best to convince us that they have only been informed otherwise. Thankfully we had a printout of our booking which mentioned that the room we had paid for would come along with kitchen facilities.Otherwise we would have had no option but to accept the standard room. It was only after we told them that this amounted to "cheating" that they finally relented and gave us a room with kitchen facilities. We understand that they gave us a one-bedroom apartment.

When we returned to the hotel at 3 or 4 in the afternoon on the second day, the housekeeping service had still not been done. The check out also took ages.

However, the quality of rooms and the infrastucture was excellent. The standard rooms were a bit on the smaller side, though. However, the one bedroom apartment was spacious and overlooking the garden.

The hotel is about 3 km from the town centre. That isn't a problem if you have your own conveyance, as we had. In fact it is a pleasant drive to the lakefront.

The New World is in the town centre if you are self catering.

Although the hotel had good facilities, the attitude and service levels need to improve.

Stayed here with a group of 4 adults and two children under 2 for three nights in April 2010. The property is very attractive and it has everything you need - laundary, all cookery, dishwasher, etc, for a comfortable extended stay. We all particularly enjoyed the hot pools and swimming pools (which were all nicely heated in the chilly April air). The until was a good size with two units joining - a single bedroom unit and the family room unit, thus creating a super two bedroom suite with everything needed. The restaurant was ok but not exceptional. There are also some very nice lounge areas with attractive fire places in the main lobby area. There are two restaurants within 5 minutes walk, one of them the Lonestar, and the hotel itself is a 5 minute drive to the lakefront. I would definately reccommend this place to friends, especially those who like to unwind in a nice hot pool at the end of a long day.
