“Not the quality expected”
Reviewed April 20, 2010

We stayed for two nights, meeting family which was to be the highlight of our trip. Unfortunately, we were quite let down. I was travelling with an older family member. Our room was up a flight of stairs with no lift. We could not change rooms without extra cost. The view from the Bedroom though, was outstanding. The room was tiny but looked attractive with a nice balcony. The family member had a nap in the afternoon and was woken to a man in her room which even though it was a staff member was not nice and a bit scarry. The meal at the restaurant that night was overpriced and not up to the standard I expected in a Mercure Hotel. The second day we were locked out - a keying error. The room was not serviced properly. We had no toilet paper and the dishes (glasses & cups) were left dirty and not replaced. No answer at reception to attend to these problems. The beds were the most uncomfortable in the whole trip. Well the only uncomfortable ones actually. There was a party at the Venue across the street and it did not stop till 1:00am. So no sleep either, but I don't think we would have minded so much if the beds weren't so aweful. We booked the Hotel on reputation and because it looked good, but all in all it was not a great experience. It may have been better if we only stayed one night! Shame because Wanaka is a great place to visit and we had a great meal and very reasonable at The Reef upstairs on the Waterfront the next night.

Overall the hotel is very good,if a bit out of town, but I did have a few small gripes. Each person I saw checking out had some problem with their bill , but the staff were helpful in sorting things out. I had a superior room , but no view, TV was in an inconvenient place, shower had no place to rest toiletries. Lap pool was excellent, as were the hot tubs and small pools/sauna/fitness room.Buffet breakfast for the price was only average.

Our stay at Oakridge was fantastic. The facilities are outstanding with the pools being a huge asset to the resort. We dined in the restaurant regularly throughout our stay and were impressed by the standard of the menu service alike. The staff at Oakridge were friendly and courteous, providing huge help with our numerous questions! We loved the feel of being away from it all up the hill while still only being a short trip into the hub of Wanaka.

I brought this online through the Mercure website for less than $100 a night. Considering we had been paying nearly as much for backpackers accommodation throughout part of our stay on the West Coast I wasn't holding much hope. But what a surprise. The rooms were sizeable and elegant. Great bathrooms and we even had basic kitchen supplies. The room was clean and having a balcony was an added bonus. Some will complain it is out of town but that was an advantage to us. We went to NZ to appreciate nature and not sip lattes.
The other VERY unexpected advantage of this place was the pool, spa and sauna facilities. All very well maintained and FREE. We stayed at some much more expensive hotels for a bit of an indulgence but this really was an unexpected find. Would highly recommend. Oh and try the skydiving over any bungy jumping. Not only do you get a beautiful view of the mountains from the plane but a full body buzz.
Wanaka beats Queenstown hands down in my opinion.

We both liked this resort - it had a lovely homely yet classy feel to it, even though it was a distance out of town, probably a half hour walk. We enjoyed the hot pools immensely - they had 8 or so couple sized hot pools set in a rockery above two large pools around the restaurant. Very relaxing. Check in was also quick and friendly.
We only had two complaints: a rather steep stairway to our room, and lack of air conditioning or a fan. This was the only time I felt uncomfortably hot in all of NZ, but it made the room very difficult to sleep in.
Still, I'd recommend in colder weather.

Stayed here one night on way betwen Franz Josef and Queenstown. Arrived quite late after a long winter drive throughthe mountains and Oakridge looked so warm and inviting! Cuick check in and lovely room in little chalet style buildings. Realyl warm and cosy when we got in as well and really well furnished room, lovely bathrooms with heated tiles. We didnt have time to try the fantastic looking 'thermal pool' area but it looked great steaming away in the winter chill. had a nice meal in the restaurant and well priced considering the corporate clientele who seemed to be the main residents that evening. Front desk took several months to credit my a-club points which was alittle inefficient but hotel stay itseflwas great, lovely place, a real treat!

Room small with several stains on the carpet. Several squashed bugs on the walls & holes in the net curtains. The bed was comfortable though. Lack of power points meant I had to put the jug in the handbasin to use the plug in the bathroom. The fridge was warm inside with no mini bar
We stayed here as we are A Club members but would not stay again. As A New Zealander I'm embarressed to read the reviews from overseas visitors as there are so many better places to stay
