My partner and I stayed at the Wanaka Homestead Lodge early February for one night and were very pleased with the accommodations. We were greeted with a friendly check-in and shown to our room, which was neat, clean and perfect for what we needed. The room had lots of natural light and ventilation and a comfortable, clean bed.

There was a public laundry facility, which we didn't use, but would have been nice had we stayed longer. The spa pool was also a nice surprise and did wonders for tired ankles and feet from too much hiking and exploring!

The owner pointed out a shortcut to the lake, and after a ten minute walk, we were downtown for dinner, which was very convenient.

For breakfast, the owner accommodated our need for an early check out due to our flight, and our made-to-order breakfast was served to us earlier than the standard time, which we really appreciated. The breakfast was DELIGHTFUL, served in the beautiful great room. We really enjoyed the feeling of hospitality and homeyness.

I would definitely recommend the Wanaka Homestead Lodge and feel it is well worth the few extra dollars it may cost above other accommodations in the Wanaka area.

We only stayed here one night but wish we could have stayed longer. The room had everything we needed and the whole place felt very cosy and friendly. The little touches, like having cookies to help yourself to, were lovely. Ed and Carol couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The grounds are peaceful and the lake is really close, accessed by a short walk through a lovely park. Would highly recommend!

We stayed for 6 nights in the super king room in the lodge and thought it was superb. The no frills room was large and airy as was the bathroom and spotlessly clean. There was lots to eat at breakfast and a 24 hour supply of cookies, tea and coffee. The rooms do not have mini-fridges, but there is a communal fridge which was largely underused when we stayed. The location of the lodge was perfect - about a 10 minute walk from the centre of Wanaka which gave us instant access to walks, cycle rides, restaurants, shops and the cinema. Moreover, our extremely helpful and friendly hosts, Carol and Ed, were informative and really enhanced our stay. We loved it!

In other words, for a Wanaka

This has to be one of the nicest places we've ever stayed, and we've travelled quite a bit. We found the architecture very inviting and homey. Our family of 4 was comfortable in the 2 bedroom/2 bath cottage. The cottage is spacious and the kitchen fully furnished. A free laundry room was steps away and it was good to have this facility. We liked the location, being out of the main busy part of town. We walked into town for dinners. It was about a 15 minute beautiful walk along the lake into town. It was easy to access the shoreline trail and we enjoyed walking a distance away from town on the path. Ed and Carol were hospitable and helpful. A separate outdoor hot tub was ok but not pristine. All in all, we loved the place, and wished we had more than two nights there.

Room Tip: The cottage was perfect for our family of 4

We stayed in a lodge room on 17 December 2012 during our trip around the South Island. The room was clean, bed comfiy, bathroom very spacious with a double shower, however coffee making facilities were only available downstairs in the common lodge area. As we were travelling by car, we had some 'travelling food' that required refridgeration and a bar fridge was not provided in the room. We did find, finally, that a common fridge was available for our use, however the owners had not shared this info upon check in. We suggest that the owners consider adding a small fridge and coffee making facilities in the room to enhance the 'value' rating. In the end, the accommodation was a bedroom with ensuite. The cost was considerably higher than other, more spacious and accommodating places that we stayed on our trip and this was disappointing.
Otherwise, on a positive note, the accommodation was within walking distance to town, the lodge was lovely, and the included breakfast was very good!

Room Tip: It appears that the cottages may be the preferred option.

Thank you for your feedback. Your review states that your accommodation was a bedroom with an ensuite. This is usually the case with most bed and breakfast accommodations in the Otago area.

We do have another type of accommodation here at the Homestead - self-contained cottages with full private kitchen facilities and a fridge, perhaps this may have been more suitable for your needs.

The bed and breakfast lodge that you stayed in has the fridge/tea and coffee making facilities situated beside the guest lounge. We have set it up this way so that guests can meet and socialise with other travellers in the lounge area when having their drinks. Thank you for your positive comments regarding the Lodge and the breakfast.

Stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage for 4 nights over Christmas with my wife and 1yr old and we really enjoyed it.

The cottage is very spacious, with extremely comfortable bedrooms and large bath/shower rooms. The sitting area has 2 bigs sofas and is very homely. Some people seem to have taken issue with the lack of lake views and the grass courtyard, but we liked this and our son loved playing on the grass with Douglas, the border terrier.

We found having the laundry useful and the hot tub was a great temperature, actually hot!

The location is a good 15 minute walk from the main area of wanaka which is beneficial as a bit quieter and the lake is only a short stroll away.

The hosts were friendly and we could not recommend this place more.

We felt so comfortable from the moment we arrived, and once we met Ed and Carol, we felt very welcomed and well-cared for during our time in Wanaka. We could walk to the shops and restaurants along the lakefront, and there were several indoor & outdoor areas perfect for relaxing and breathing in the mountain air.

And for anyone on the fence between Wanaka and its boisterous big sister Queenstown, we felt that Wanaka was the perfect pace with all the amenties and views of Queenstown and less of the craziness.

To note, this place is a little more like a boutique hotel than a B&B - your hosts are around, but this is not their home, but rather a purpose-built boutique lodge.

The only thing we didn't love is that our room was dark with few windows and the temperature was difficult to moderate and we had to open the skylight above our bed, which could have been tricky for some.
