“Great stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

Stayed 2 or 3 times during skiing season. Rooms are basic, clean and price was right for location and state of the rooms. Has shared kitchen facilities so can do own cooking if required. Overall basic accommodation but priced accordingly. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Third stop on our road trip after an amazing drive went to the i-site on the lake front and got us a room for, wait for it.......$89!!!
I-site told us it was bit old but good and clean.
Wow this place should be marketed to hippies and the like. You can't call it retro or kitsch because I'm pretty sure it's the real original deal!
Pink and green painted furniture, carpets halfway up the walls and a radio in the wall above the bed! and it smelt a bit like Granny so the windows were kept wide open whenever we were in the room, it was a real giggle although I don't think it's meant to be. Desk staff were friendly & helpful.
Room was quite spacious, tea & coffee making facilities, on site coffee shop and bar.
We cooked in the communal kitchen whch was very well equiped. There are some outside seating area's which we used in the early evening and got eaten alive by mossies, keeping the windows open was a massive mistake, by next morning I had about 15 bites, I kind of looked like I had the plague :( so much so that I had to visit the pharmacy next day as my anti-histamine tablets weren't cutting in in the fight against the raging itchies.
Had a nice walk along the lake front next morning then went to Puzzling World

i tried to ask a very simple question about how many actual beds & bed sizes are in the room i wanted to book. not how many people the room sleeps & they came back to me with a very general answer seemingly avoiding the question, so i tried to ask again & they didnt even bother to reply.. so i didnt bother to stay there.
their lack of response gives me a fair idea what sort of service & attitude they have toward their customer.
i booked elsewhere, paid a lot more, but got very good service.

Very well located hotel which, whilst perfectly comfortable, needs a bit of TLC to enable it to fulfil its potential; the bathrooms in particular need to be upgraded. Very much enjoyed the dinner in the adjoining Cafe which was open just for our Tour group - one of the best meals we ate in New Zealand. Breakfast on the other hand was a bit chaotic with too many people trying to get served in the very limited space available.

Maybe 2 star , in summer 3/10.
1970's decor (Chocolate Shag pile carpet) old style motor lodge next to a tavern.
Good views of the lake and mountains. In a ski village.
Like an oven in summer. Arrived at night the room had been shut all day. No Airconditioning , no fans and no flyscreens. You'll have the windows open and have to live with the bugs and Mosquito bites.
Shower only good if under 5'6".

Room Tip: Might be OK in winter. An oven in summer.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Hotel. As noted in your review we are an older property with Good Lake and Mountain Views. Our price is reflective of our older but very clean and comfortable accommodation. Our Aubergine Cut Pile Carpet is no more than 5 years old, and we have regular update programme for all the soft furnishings in the rooms. This January most of NZ including Wanaka has been experiencing unusually high temperatures, there is normally no need for Air Conditioning in our Ski Village. We do however have fans available from Reception and it is daylight till 10pm so windows and doors out to the Lake View Balconys or Garden Patios can be left open till after the sun goes down with limited concern of bugs, mosquitos aren't commonly found in the Wanaka CBD. As part of our regular update programme we are changing our Shower Roses to Shower Slides enabling people to adjust the heights to suit. Regards, Jo Bruce, Manager, Wanaka Hotel

I was on tour and given the state of the road up to Franz Joseph our tour manager needed to find us emergency accomodation so we were booked into the Wanaka hotel... the rooms were dated the bathroom was okay though the toilet flush seemed to go on forever and we all thought we had broken it as for amenties we did not expect much for us it was just a place to stay for the night.
The location though is great it is just a few minutes walk into the town and the staff seemed friendly enough, if you the room were updated it could be a lot better.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Hotel. We are sorry there were issues with your toilet, we always appreciate to be advised if there is any maintenance required in the room so we may attend to it immediately for Guest Comfort. We are Great Value for our Town Centre Location and our competitive pricing is reflective of our older very clean and comfortable rooms. Regards, Jo Bruce, Manager, Wanaka Hotel
