Description: Located in a beautiful garden setting infused with artwork from world renowned artists, overlooking the lake and mountains of Wanaka, Bistro Gentil serves wonderful modern French cuisine using only the best seasonal produce from Central Otago and it's kitchen garden. Being the first South Island restaurant to house an Enomatic wine-dispenser system, diners can enjoy a range of fine wines by either the glass, half glass or taster. With indoor and outdoor seating, we are open for à la carte dining Tuesday to Saturday evenings. A seven course degustation menu is also available on Friday and Saturday. You are welcome to try our complimentary samples of olive oils and pure fruit balsamic vinegars. Bistro Gentil was recommended in the 2014 Cuisine Good Food Guide.

We had an enjoyable birthday dinner at the cozy and romantic Bistro Gentil.

The Chef and his team put much love into their dishes. They are beautifully plated. The menu options cover a good spectrum.

The self serve wine wall is a cool option. You can select tasters, half glass and full glass. Each priced accordingly. So try something different.

Reservations are highly recommended especially during peak season.

Delicious food, stunning view! Reasonably priced given the quality of food. Would definitely visit again.

We are Wanaka locals and have dined at BG many times over the past 6-8 years. Some time ago, I found that while the food was amazing, it was often a little too fancy in the fact that the dish comprised of too many flavor's that competed. However... it changed hands a couple of years ago and is now owned by the head chef (I believe). We went a couple of weekends ago and it was AMAZING. It has to be one of the, if not the best restaurant in the South island, and can't be far off Michelin Star quality. That includes all of the very good restaurant's in Qtn. Exquisite presentation, wonderful flavors and quite generous quantity.
Two small negatives. It is fairly small inside so a little cramped, but certainly OK. Second is the cost of the wine. I have seen some one comment that they take "ripping you off with the wine cost to an art form". Amusing I know but not far off the truth. To be constructive, I feel if they reduced the cost to something more resonable, they would more than make up the difference with increased sales.
Enjoy!

Bistro Gentil created the BEST of problems- we wanted to eat more than we knew we could! After some haggling for favorites we had three entrees and two mains with a local glass of 'liquid' dessert to finish. A busy Saturday night was expertly managed by just two great staff, and the delightful Jessica seemed to be everywhere for everyone! Their system of help yourself by the glass wines, both frees up the staff a little whilst enabling you to be able to pace yourself if you require. For a small winelist this also opens up great options for all, across a range of styles. The food was in the fine dining neighbourhood but yet the Chef has ensured its a friendly hood! All elements on the plate there for flavour and not just pretty facade. Lambswool seat covers made for a cosy and comfortable chair we didnt want to leave.

We spontaneously went to the bistro in the evening. Without reservation and got a place outside. It was quite cold, but okay, since we had not reserved a table. We got the menu and when we wanted to order, the waiter said we had to wait about 20 minutes until he would take the order, because he would firstly take care of the tables with reservations. When we asked about the wine list, he said: why, do you want a whole bottle? You could get wine inside by the glass and the wine lists are all on the other tables at the moment. We didn't get a wine list at all. When finally tables became free inside, we were not asked to come in, although it was cold outside as I said. We found this treatment very rough. If guests without a reservation are not welcome, you should say so in advance. In the end, we paid the same price as guests with reservations.

That treatment was really a pity, because the food was very good.
