“Friendly place to stay at Wanaka”
Reviewed December 16, 2010

We stayed in the Te Wanaka Lodge for 2 nights. We had a very warm welcome from Wayne and Mandy. They know the area very well and are more than happy to give you all kind of advices on how to spend your time.

To me the quality of a lodge is mainly determined by the attitude of its owners and the cleanness of the house. Based on that the lodge is perfect. Reading other reviews, there are some complains about the size of the rooms, but to me those complains are bogus. True, the rooms are not huge, but big enough to put your stuff down and the beds are comfortable. The bathroom is good and the rooms are clean. Since you have two big living rooms for the guests, there is no real need for a huge bed room. In the kitchen you can always get coffee and tea.

Breakfast was very good. Wayne knows how to cook it! And if you do not like a cooked breakfast there is a lot of other food. For diner Wayne and Mandy know where to go (and where not), and Wanaka is a nice place to stay.

We did a hike to the Rob Ray glacier and that was really a good day walk! Thanks for the suggestion Wayne!

I would recommend this lodge to everybody who likes a warm welcome and a good place to stay when visiting Wanaka

Great to see that you enjoyed the Rob Roy Glacier walk as much as we did. We really do live in paradise and love being able to share it with people such as yourselves. Thanks for the feedback!

We spent three weeks travelling around NZ and this was our least favorite hotel. We were here for a couple of nights and the owners didn't speak to us at all. Breakfast was good and there was plenty of food but the owners were lacking the charisma and hospitality characteristic of all the Kiwis. The room was tiny and we couldn't even open our suitcases comfortably. We had to pile them up on top of each other in a corner. To our surprise this was the only place that charged for internet, but they didn't even charge a flat fee to use it for the day they charged by the hour which was outrageous considering the fact that the rooms were not that cheap! Oh and hopefully you get lucky and score one of the six parking spaces they have for the entire place which has over ten rooms... if not be prepared to walk!!

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on our lodge. I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations. The size of our rooms is not something we can change, but most of our guests do accept the size and make the most of the fantastic lounges and guest areas we have. The internet is charged at either $5.00 for an hour or $12.00 for 3 hours, this can be used in small amounts, over the course of a multi day stay, making it a reasonable price. I am sorry we did not explain the parking properly. We do only have 6 parks at the front of the lodge, however we failed to explain that the parking in the large carpark at the rear of the lodge is also for our guests use and is unlimited free parking. There is a back entrance to the lodge. Again thanks for your review, we will adjust our check-in procedure to ensure our guests are informed

We stayed in Upton House which is run by owners of Te Wanaka Lodge it was a 3 bedroom house and it was beautiful, all new apliances, lovely rooms bbq wahsing facilities, very relaxing and would also be great in ski season with fireplace as well. Mandy was the most genuine helpful lady I have come across in a long time, Please if you need a 3 bedroom house (we had 5 people) stay here it was awesome, Wanaka is a lovely place. !

Booked two nights in a very nice room with view over the mountains. A top accomodation with a lounge and a terrace outside. Having a delicoius breakfast with tea, coffee, toasts, eggs and veggies, just a great start in to the day. Very cosy rooms, clean bathrooms and comfortable beds. The hosts are a customer friendly persons with great knowledge about to do´s around the area.

We really couldn't have asked for a better place to stay than Te Wanaka Lodge. The lodge itself is uniquely beautiful in its design and layout, the location is just a few seconds walk from central Wanaka and the lake, the rooms are immaculate and very comfortable, the hot tub is fantastic...

But all that pales in comparison with the service and hospitality on offer here. Mandy, the host, was tireless in her efforts to ensure we had everything we needed for a comfortable, enjoyable, and very well-fed stay!

From the moment we arrived at reception to check in, there was little mention of house rules and payments and other such minutiae. Instead, Mandy immediately issued us with a map of the area, on which she proceeded to scribble all the best eateries in town. It was such a welcome departure from the usual boring check-in talk, and it immediately made us feel like we were welcome guests in Mandy's home, rather than just customers in a hotel.

She then showed us around the lodge, making sure we felt completely at home and at ease. She suggested we spent as much time as we desired in the two cosy lounges rather than our room, which she described as 'a bit small', but it seemed perfectly adequate in size to us, with a generous double bed, spacious en-suite and balcony.

We had actually changed our booking at the last minute, as we were originally booked into another, slightly cheaper, motel round the corner. But the advantage of having breakfast and afternoon tea included in the price at Te Wanaka made it more than worthwhile paying the additional $25 per night. In fact, we would have probably spent double that amount on equivalent breakfasts and coffees had we stayed in the other motel!

The breakfasts were indeed superb - a buffet of cereals, porridge and toast, followed by a different and delectable cooked option each day. There was also the option of various other evening activities such as massages and mulled wine, and an evening meal on one night. Although we didn't take part in the evening activities due to commitments with friends, they sounded like just what one might need after a hard day on the slopes.

We only wish we could have stayed longer at Te Wanaka Lodge, and we'll definitely be back again at the earliest opportunity. Don't bother with accommodation anywhere else in Wanaka - Te Wanaka Lodge has everything you could possibly need, and more!

Light sleepers beware - you know a place is bad when they provide earplugs. Seriously - they had 2 packs of earplugs in the miniature bathroom. The walls and staircases are all made of tin (the same stuff you're used to seeing on a tin roof) so not only can you hear every sound of every person in the lodge, your walls and floor will vibrate too. The room was pretty - too bad it was so small that one of us had to climb into the bed to allow the other to pass. There was no place to store our suitcases, so we had to stack them and literally climb over them to get to the bathroom door. It was very uncomfortable and they must use some sort of trick photography on their website because the room size did not resemble what was advertised.

Parking is very limited and the lodge is a bit further away from the town's main areas. Either walk or be prepared to lose your parking place.

Most disturbing was the refrigerator. I asked the manager if we could put a small container of milk in their community fridge. She very nicely said that we could. However, I saw that the fridge was set on the warmest temperature setting, presumably to save money, but this meant that most of the food was warm. It was not cold enough to keep perishable products cold. I was also grossed out because this was the fridge they used to store breakfast items - meat, cheese, eggs, etc. They didn't even put the butter in the fridge; they kept it on the counter. Not sure what the New Zealand health code (if there is one) would say about it.

A large tour group had booked most of the rooms at the lodge, therefore we could not eat breakfast until they were gone. It only delayed us half an hour, but I would not have expected a B&B to cater to a large tour group. The large group tended to take over most of the common areas. The managers did not have time to talk to us, an experience not important to me but I know many other B&B devotees enjoy meeting managers and other guests. The manager seemed to feel bad about it; she finally had some free time and tried to talk us up while we were checking out!

All in all, Te Wanaka is not a good value for your money and it will be hard to get a good night's sleep. I do not understand why so many people rave about it. I booked it specifically because so many other travelers recommended it.

Thanks for taking the time to place a review on Trip Advisor, and I am sorry we didn't meet your expectations. Te Wanaka Lodge, being a lodge, having 13 guest rooms, does occasionally accommodate small special interest groups, and I am sorry you were unable to have breakfast at your preferred time.
Our rooms have double glazing to reduce the noise, however we are located in the heart of Wanaka Village and as such there is general town noise which can disturb a lighter sleeper, hence we put the plugs in the rooms as an extra service for these guests.
Te Wanaka Lodge does adhere to the regional food hygiene regulations, and we are annually inspected by a registered council inspector. The refrigerator temperature is set within food hygiene standards and all butter is stored in the refrigerator except when it is either on the table or being cleared at the end of breakfast service.
Thanks again for your review.
