“This is the original Tardis!”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

If you drive from Queenstown to Wanaka over the Crown Range Pass (very hairy roads), you will probably miss this wonderful place. It just looks like a little old building at the edge of the road. DONT be fooled, behind the small facade is a Tardis like world of history good food and drink, relaxing gardens with the perfect place to break your journey and have lunch. People we met there told us it is a great place to stay as well as just visit. There is even a Gold Mine shaft in the bar. Wander around the maze of rooms and passages and you will find all kinds of artifacts from bygone days. The food is very good and reasonably priced. See if you can find the Hotel cats!!

I have been to Cardrona Hotel many times after skiing - having a vin chaud or four. This time I was in the area for business and decided to stay a couple of nights. Its a great charming old historic place and building that has survived over the years since the gold dried up. Its not a luxury accommodation but that's not why you stay at Cordrona Hotel. The moment you enter the hotel you step back in time and its a great feeling. The staff is really friendly and welcoming - all are very down to earth and you feel good being a guest there. Its great to sit down next to the fireplace and simply relax. The food is great, I had lamb chops and also tried the cod- beautiful! There is also a continental breakfast included in the rate. The rooms are a little small but it is what it is at a place like this. The place is fantastic for kids - a big playing area at the back but keep an eye on them as the main road is quite busy at then front.

A nice place to have a get-together for drinks and a light meal in an olde world "step back in time" environment. The staff were friendly and attentive without being too intrusive, letting you chit-chat and still feel like you weren't left out. Such a great historic building, well preserved and renovated from the gold mining days.....would Loved to have stayed a night there!

We had passed the hotel on several occasions ,noting its quaint 'cowboy' charm and the old car outside so decided to make it a lunch stop on the way to Wanaka for a change . What a delightful rustic building, still capturing, I guess, some of the pioneering spirit of days gone by. The bar was staffed by a lone lady who I don't think was pleased to see five customers at once ! A smile would have been good. Still ,orders were placed and we made our way to the outside garden. Despite the sun there was plenty of shade and of course the surrounding scenery was superb. Our selection of food and drinks were delivered by more friendlier staff . No complaints about the food . We checked out the old car in the shed . Don't restore it. Toilets excellent. However whilst I accept the 'need' for background music (!!) BEYONCE at a large number of decibels in that beautiful setting is not needed !!

Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback on the music playing the day you stopped in. We totally agree with you that this was not the best music choice over lunchtime and we'll endeavour to ensure more appropriate music is played during the daytime.

Thanks again for taking the time to submit a review.

they know how to pour a great guinness, & that is worth stopping in for!, the staff were really great, until the morning & nobody was around to check us out & then they didnt seem to know how too.
also the spa pool wasnt working, & that was something we were looking forward to using after a long day of travel, & we still had to pay full rate.
the rooms are really nice, & great bathrooms too. we did get moved from our original room, & given some odd excuse about the bathroom, but with the noise from the staff in the adjoining dinning area, i suspect they wanted us further from their little shindig, which was thoughtful of them to move us, but they were still rather loud.
i'd still go back here, but i think i'd check to make sure everything was in working order prior to booking.
the food was nothing to brag about, but its a good pub meal, in a historic pub... & did i mention the guinness?

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us back in March. The spa pool is now up and running again.

We've also recently launched a new menu featuring dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, plus all the traditional favourites.

A delightful historic building on the side road between Wanaka and Queenstown. You will have to stop for a photograph so you might as well pop in for a pint. Inside the pub you will find information on why this pub is so famous.

Even in the summer you will find a fire burning in the stone fireplace and the pub serves fairly good food. If you are looking for a light ale then try the Cadronna ale and if you fancy more taste then you can also find Guinness on tap

Stopped for a beer and an evening meal. Always a lovely spot for a drink out in the gardens especially on a hot afternoon. However our meal was disappointing. My daughter and I decided to share the Waiorau Platter which is advertised on the menu as an option for two people to share. Keeping this in mind it was disappointing to find only one mussell and one scallop, the rest of the platter consisted of 4 squid rings, 2 small pieces of fish, two prawn twisters and two prawn cutlets. I did question a staff member regarding a platter for two only having one each of the mussells and scallops but she didn't seem to be up with what the platter should include. Always willing to give an eatery a chance to redeem itself, and after debating whether we should head back to Wanaka for our dessert, we relented and ordered the creme brulee. Unfortunately disappointment again, toppings hadn't been caramelised much and the we couldn't decide whether the custard was store bought or just a bad home made one, and definitely not made with real vanilla bean or paste. Lots of room for improvement!
