“Best. Wedges. Ever.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2012

What an awesome place to drop in for lunch while driving from Queenstown to Wanaka. One of NZs oldest pubs, with a few updates in keeping with the heritage of the site and the area.

We had a simple lunch ... Wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce, a bowl of fries, and deep fried camembert cheese. Wow ... The food that came could have fed ten, rather than the 3 that were present. The wedges were simply the best I have ever had. Hard to get excited about wedges? Try these ones.

Bill for an armys worth of food plus two Cardrona Ales, a hot chocolate and a juice was $51.

The staff were friendly and accommodating. Check out the garden bar, old cars, carts and buildings in the back are well worth seeing.

Recommended.

Dave.

If ever a New Zealand hotel was iconic, it's this one. It's appeared in dozens of TV programmes and commercials as a symbol of all that's unique about the South Island of New Zealand. But this is much more than just a facade - this really is a great pub to visit. We've never stayed in the hotel part of the pub, but we've stopped a couple of times for lunch, and enjoyed the great atmosphere, the ambience, and the food is really, really good. Not just good, but fast, too. The garden out the back is lovely, and full of fascinating bits and pieces from the area's gold mining past. There's also some fascinating memorabilia around the pub itself, on the walls, the shelves and tables, so take time to have a look around. I was slightly surprised there was no low alcohol beer available, as most people would be driving to the pub, but there are plenty of soft drinks.

I love stopping here on a day road trip from Queenstown. On a sunny autumn (fall) day, it was a delight to sit outside at the back of the pub having lunch (fabulous and good value!) along with other relaxed and happy patrons. Inside the fire is on and the service is good and friendly.

Room Tip: Didn't stay but they have little cottage rooms on site.

The hotel structure is very old. But don't let looks deceive you. The rooms have been updated to a modern touch inside. Beds are cozy. Carpet clean. Bathroom is elegantly tiled. Shower has a good flow of water and gas heated. Clean towels are provided. Modern gas radiator heater in room and bathroom assures constant warmth on very cold days. A kettle is provided should you need to make coffee, tea or choco. A small TV is provided for entertainment. And no refrigerator in the room. Continental breakfast is provided for free. The hotel has a very good restaurant that serves good portion meals. Overall, we has a pleasurable stay in this hotel.

This place made a great lunch stop for our drive from Te Anau to Franz Josef glacier. From the outside it looks quaint and old world-ish, but you would never have guessed that it hides such a lovely little beer garden behind. Love the indoor and outdoor fireplaces as well. The fish and chips was good - nice crispy fish in beer batter with fries and salad, hearty portions.

Don't just stop to take photos outside. Step inside and immerse yourself in a little history. The first time we passed by, we called in for a cold one but we came back again for lunch. The meals were hearty with great service from friendly staff. Loved the log fire and the warm, cosy feeling. The gardens out the back were lovely and well kept - more like a private oasis. The shed with the old cars just added to the historic feel about the place. Only wish we had known about the Cardrona Hotel before we came to NZ and booked an overnight stay on our way to Wanaka. If we're ever this way again, we'll definitely visit this pub.
