Reviewed February 1, 2014

Only stayed for a night as on a road trip, stunning location and if my memory serves me correctly think we had rooms 72 and 73 with great views over the lake, room was very spacious and given the poor reviews of the food and service which some reviewers have experienced we did no experience this as we had room service which was prompt and food was fine.

We stayed at Edgewater for 2 nights only :(, I wanted to stay longer because the room was gorgeous, and the view was amazing! Went with hubbie and our two boys (2yrs & 4yrs) and we loved it. Had dinner at the café/restaurant and the food was fabulous. I would definitely recommend it and go back again. It also had a little playground, with a trampoline that the boys loved.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the lake/mountains

Hi Alexandra

Great to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay with us. The views are pretty amazing!

Hopefully you'll have an opportunity to come back and visit us again....perhaps in the winter season for some fun family time on the slopes.

Kind regards
Trish

We could not have had a better stay here. Our room, though small, had fantastic views of the lake and grounds. The staff was amazing on every level. We booked our flight to Milford Sound here and very glad we did rather than flying out of Queensland as originally planned...as Roger pointed out, for $10 more you get a much longer flight and the terrain is amazing). Dinner at the restaurant was okay, but for breakfast, the morning scones were terrific and calorie laden enough to last much of the day. Good coffee as well. The hotel rents nice bikes, but they could stand some maintenance (my seat would not stay up despite every effort and the gearing on the first bike my friend started on was loose so we had to go back to exchange it). We used them to tour around the lake and a river after stopping in at puzzleworld and would highly recommend it this bike ride...second favorite of the trip.

Dear Meltraveled

Great to hear you had such a nice time at Edgewater and the region.

You are correct, the flight to Milford Sound from Wanaka is pretty spectacular!

Your comments about the bike maintenance are noted.

Kind regards

This hotel sits in an enviable position on the shores of Lake Wanaka. With a waterside view in the foreground and a mountain backdrop dusted with snow even in high summer the place is idyllic. So idyllic in fact that a young couple were getting married on the manicured lawns overlooking the lake during our stay. Rooms are spacious with balconies, the usual facilities and as you would expect spectacular views. Breakfast was buffet style with ample choices. Staff were friendly and helpful as is usually the case in NZ.
You could easily walk (jog or run - plenty did) along the shoreline into the town where there are numerous eateries/bars. Walking will take 15 to 20 minutes at an average pace.

There are two points I would make which are meant to improve the experience for the visitor.
1. Drinks at breakfast are not freshly prepared but are from insulated flasks. This means the coffee tends to be luke warm and of course it is simply not possible to make a decent cup of tea without boiling water.
2. There is a surcharge for using a credit card. I find this irritating more than anything as most people pay with a card so the extra should be factored into the rates.

On the whole staying here is a good experience, reasonable value for what you get, and I could recommend without hesitation.

Thanks for making such a detailed review and we appreciate your points of suggestions.

Yes the credit card surcharge is relatively recent. I am not sure if you traveled in Australia recently but may have experienced it there. Your point about factoring it in is a consideration so perhaps in time this may become usual business practice.

I've brought your comments about the insulated flasks to our management's attention.

We are very proud of Edgewater's lakefront location. Hopefully you'll be able to come back in the future and enjoy Edgewater and Wanaka again.

Kind regards
Trish

Stayed here 2 nights on a Back Roads cycling trip, so the price of the hotel was included in the trip.

Wanaka itself, is a very pretty town and a nice destination for a week or weekend away. The hotel is right on the lake and the property itself is very pretty. It's a pretty 15 -20 minute walk from the hotel along the lake into town.

Our room was a 1 bedroom suite with a fully appointed kitchen, and dining and seating area. It also had a washing machine and dryer. It seemed to be about the same quality level as Embassy Suites; that is, very nice but not over the top.

We ate dinner in the restaurant one night, which was very good. The bar area adjacent to the restaurant is very lively and fun. Breakfasts were also good - hot and cold items served buffet style. Like many NZ restaurants we sampled, the coffee is very weak and almost undrinkable, so we wound up ordering made-to-order coffee ("long black") which was much better.

This is a good place for families, friends and couples, that we liked a lot and would return to if ever in Wanaka.

Great location. We have an one-bedroom apartment with a lakefront view. It was beautiful. The unit has a functional kitchen, an excellent bathroom and a washer/dryer. It is a short drive to town and to the beautiful hiking trails in Mt Aspiring national park. The only thing negative is the presence of Asian tour groups, which bring the tourists to the lawn in front of my apartment (they came to "hike" there). But that is not a major issue. Overall I enjoyed my stay there. The restaurant caters to the large tour groups and therefore one should not expect much from it. Wanaka has many nice restaurants. No need to get stuck in hotel restaurant.

Dear Travel World Mom

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences at Edgewater. It sounds like you enjoyed the one-bedroom suite.

I am not sure of the date you stayed in January but it may have been on the cusp of the Lunar Chinese New Year, which is a major travel period for Asians. Hence the presence of a touring party.

We hope you'll be able to come back to Wanaka and enjoy the town and treks sometime soon.

Kind regards
Trish

We stayed 3 nights when in Wanaka for a wedding. However this hotel could well be a destination if looking for a "drop out". Our room was large and well appointed with a view straight to the lake and stunning scenery. The grounds are spacious and well kept. The lake front walkway is right there and goes as far as needed in both directions (iapprox 15mins walk to the town), plus there are bikes, tennis court, and a children's play ground …. and a beauty spa too. The restaurant is good, and without exception we found the staff welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Request a room with a lake view. If steps are a problem request a ground floor room.
