We requested a double room (shared bathroom) and were given what can only be described as the garden shed (named Love Shack, in an attempt to distract from the reality). It was a separate building, with a sink, very small room with only just enough space for two rucksacks. The door did not have a separate lock, instead a padlock on a bolt. There were many insects (spiders, flys, bees) in the room which we had to attempt to get rid of each night and by wearing much repellant, but we were next to the vegetable patch.
Despite being away from the creeking inside the main area, we were kept awake by other hostel members until the early hours who congregated outside in the patio area right next to our shed. (Hence, I'm writing this at 1am). There was a 10:30pm outside rule, but this was not adhered to on one of our 3 nights.
The kitchen was small, two hobs and two sinks, and clean as long as you got there just after it had been cleaned otherwise there were dirty pots and pans just left by fellow backpackers.
There were three communal toilets and three showers. One of the showers was so cramped, it was difficult to close the door and without getting into the shower. Also the shower curtain was too small, so water inevitably went over the floor. Another didn't drain properly, so you stood in a pool of water once you had finished.
There was one washer (available after 11am) and one dryer, but we did not use this during our stay. The washing lines were completely full, but we strung up our own line and made do with that.
The positive aspects of this hostel are the location (close to the middle on Wanaka) and the owners. Both of the ladies we met were friendly and helpful during our stay, but we can't pretend that makes up for everything else. For the same price we have stayed in much better places and we would not risk staying here again! It might have been ok if we had picked an en-suite lodge room, but can't be sure.
