Matterhorn South Lodge and Backpackers

We requested a double room (shared bathroom) and were given what can only be described as the garden shed (named Love Shack, in an attempt to distract from the reality). It was a separate building, with a sink, very small room with only just enough space for two rucksacks. The door did not have a separate lock, instead a padlock on a bolt. There were many insects (spiders, flys, bees) in the room which we had to attempt to get rid of each night and by wearing much repellant, but we were next to the vegetable patch.

Despite being away from the creeking inside the main area, we were kept awake by other hostel members until the early hours who congregated outside in the patio area right next to our shed. (Hence, I'm writing this at 1am). There was a 10:30pm outside rule, but this was not adhered to on one of our 3 nights.

The kitchen was small, two hobs and two sinks, and clean as long as you got there just after it had been cleaned otherwise there were dirty pots and pans just left by fellow backpackers.

There were three communal toilets and three showers. One of the showers was so cramped, it was difficult to close the door and without getting into the shower. Also the shower curtain was too small, so water inevitably went over the floor. Another didn't drain properly, so you stood in a pool of water once you had finished.

There was one washer (available after 11am) and one dryer, but we did not use this during our stay. The washing lines were completely full, but we strung up our own line and made do with that.

The positive aspects of this hostel are the location (close to the middle on Wanaka) and the owners. Both of the ladies we met were friendly and helpful during our stay, but we can't pretend that makes up for everything else. For the same price we have stayed in much better places and we would not risk staying here again! It might have been ok if we had picked an en-suite lodge room, but can't be sure.

Room Tip: Choose the Lodge, not the backpackers

Stayed in the backpackers on Feb 6th and disappointed with the messiness of the kitchen, lack of soap in the bathrooms and towels left lying on the floor of the shower rooms. Otherwise, well situated in the town and probably staying in the Lodge part would have been perfect. Staff were lovely and helpful.

Located right in the heart of Wanaka so is handy to the supermarket, bars, Cafes and the lake etc.
We stayed in a lodge room which was light and cosy but not the most comfortable as it was very basic.
Bathroom was clean but tired and the shower had terrible pressure.
Communal kitchen is well stocked on utensiles etc.
If your laid back and wanting a cheap place I would recommend it but if your looking for a romantic place or a girls weekend accomodation I would give it a miss.

Great little find in beautiful Wanaka. We stayed in the Lodge part and had our own bathroom which was clean and big. Shared kitchen and lounge areas were also clean and great to share a meal and chat with other travellers. Was really close to centre of town and shops. Owners were very helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone.

We stayed in Wanaka for a week and we chose a Lodge room.
This turned out to be a great choice!
They have a lounge and computers and a big open kitchen to use so we were able to save money having somewhere clean to cook and eat.
The room was large with plenty of room for our snowboarding equipment and a big comfy double bed.
The staff at reception were all lovely and really eager to help us enjoy our time in Wanaka. They booked us a sky dive and helped us find local walks and were just so helpful, they really seemed to care whether or not we had a good day, and that's special when staying at a backpackers. The backpackers kitchen has a big cosy fireplace! perfect.
We'd recommend this Hostel!

Room Tip: The only time it was noisy was when the irish pub had a band playing... but that was only 1 night of...

Arrived late in the evening and left early the next day, but the room was clean and warm. The owner was very helpful and gave us some tips on where to eat. Would recommend if you're looking for an average, clean and budget option in Wanaka.

Stayed here with a large group and loved it. The facilities were perfect for us as we were able to fire up the BBQ and cook our own food. The rooms were big enough and the location in Wanaka couldn't have been better. Keen to stay at the Matterhorn again next year.
