Owner description: Backcountry Saddle Expeditions has celebrated a few milestones this year... They are 30 years old... with an outstanding 25 years under the current management of Debs Thompson. Debs is an outdoor girl and apologizes for her lack of skill in an ever developing computer world... "It's very hard to ride horses, manage clients, answer emails and/or phone calls whilst on a horse" She is very much a one "wo"man band. Debs does however value every-bodies interest... and looks forward to people booking. The best way to book is directly with Debs... this way she can gauge every-bodies abilities, genders, heights and weights... a cell phone number gives her security and credibility of a booking. This means the client will have the best and most appropriate horse for their booking. Debs is into personal!!!

“Amazing scenery!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

We spent a couple of hours out with Deb and her horses, it was a great trip. We were given very clear instructions before we started, which meant we could sit back and relax, the horses are so well behaved. Biddy, my horse was amazing, she knew what I was thinking before I did. Would reccommend this to anyone, the scenery is amazing along the way.

“Best horses, wrong group”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

We've been on several horse treks in NZ but these appaloosas were by far the best and most comfortable ones (even the husband did not suffer any pain... :-))! They had to be since almost the whole 90min trip we had to jog to keep up with the guide who led with significant speed. Not sure if she was in a hurry or had to made up the time we lost because of a couple that was very late and just showed up before we actually were supposed to leave. One way or another, we did not have much luck with the group since in the end we were 12 people which I think is way too much, esp for one guide. We later learned that th. morning group was only 2 people. So better ask when booking which group has less people booked so far!.Anyway, our guide (the former owner I understood?) did a great job entertaining everybody, explaining about local plants, animals and landscape and even took great pictures of us on the horse posing. Thank you for that! And at the end we experienced ones got some nice gallop time :-) Would definitely go with them again and highly recommend to anybody interested!

“Lovely experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

My teenage daughter and I spent a terrific couple of hours riding with guide Kelly taking us through the magnificent Cardrona high country station. We are both novices, and both guide and horses were exceedingly patient. Walking and trotting only for us! Kelly was fun, and knowledgable about local history, flora and fauna. A wonderful experience - highly recommended.

“Highlight of our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

Even though it was my first time horse back riding, our guide (and ranch owner) Debs ensured everyone's safety and always gave useful tips along the way so that we all had an enjoyable and comfortable journey! Before we set off, she also introduced each horse and even shared some characteristics unique to each one. This made it easier to relate and connect with the horses. I was also very impressed at Debs' knowledge of the area and country as a whole. She has a great sense of humour and if anyone was nervous like me, they'd forget about it within a few minutes of setting off!

We spent nearly three hours covering almost 15 kms through the breathtaking Cardrona Valley. Not only did we see gorgeous landscape, we also spotted many animals along the way - from rabbits and dogs, to cattle and sheep. My husband and I did many other activities through our honeymoon - including skydiving - but nothing came close to this experience!

“Lots of fun.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

We were constrained by a large group, made larger at the last second by the appearance of a family which had never ridden before, which was really too bad and the only reason this wasn't a 5-star experience. Still, lovely scenery, friendly guides/owners -- highly recommended.
