“Friendly, Clean, and Quiet”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Driving up the tree lined drive it felt like we were driving up to a mansion; we were pleasantly surprised at the parks spacious layout. There was loads of green space, and landscaped areas in which their range of facilities were set.

The holiday park is located a little out of town, a several minute drive heading toward Treble Cone, but the drive is hardly noticeable. There are many different levels of accommodation from tents to the full monty of fully self-contained units. We opted for the 'cabin-style' accommodation. It was basic and fairly sparse; however, it was clean and tidy, quiet, and most importantly very warm. The bunk beds took us back to the school camp days, which was really fun. The bunk mattresses were comfy, the pillows plump, so our nightly sleeps were solid.

For the money it was great value, and enabled us to have a five-day snowboard trip, rather than three. Additionally, we could afford lift tickets and for 5 days, and was able to upgrade some of our snowboard gear, all from the money we saved on accommodation. As we spent full days speeding through the snow - from morning to night - we had no need to pay for overpriced fancy digs.

The staff were friendly and the common areas (kitchen and bathrooms) were well maintained and cleaned daily. Fellow guests were friendly and really sociable.

We enjoyed our stay so much so that in a few weeks we plan to hop back for another short snow weekend. Wanaka Top 10 Holiday Park is highly recommended if you are looking for comfortable yet affordable accommodation.

Lake Wanaka Top 10 Holiday Park Review

We arrive in the town of Lake Wanaka as the sun is setting. As we drive through town we see a large crowd of young people at Cluden’s Bar and Restaurant...I remember now, it’s University “break week” and the students are now on a brief winter break.

We find our way to the Top 10 and although a little hesitant based on the “looks” of the place we check-in. The woman at reception quotes me the “full rate” in spite of the fact this this is definitely “off season” and I ask if there’s any other discounts….”No, it’s $100 for the ensuite…” It’s getting late, I should have arrived in town earlier. I agree to one night and ask if my “Top 10 Club Membership” includes free WiFi as it does in other locations…. she hesitates but then says “I’ll get you a login so you can use the Wifi.” We get 30 minutes access / or relatively few megabytes, whichever comes first.

We get to our room…not good. We’ve just come from the Top 10 Te Anau and this place pales by comparison. It really needs updating. The stove top is a two burner hot plate, no oven, there is a microwave, sink and fridge….all in a not particularly spacious galley. The TV has 3 channels, one showing the worst of American sitcoms, one the News (which repeats the same stories every 30 minutes and one that seems to have a “loop” of “what’s great about Lake Wanaka.”

The shower and toilet are behind sliding doors…all need a bit of updating and they are freezing.

The room is cold…it is winter after all. We turn on the portable radiator style heater. It cannot keep up with the chill that permeates the room. Ah well, the bed has a “heating pad." As luck would have it, only one side works. Maybe there’s a reason there are only a few cars in this entire Holiday Park.

We make a decision…although we're prepared to spend a few nights in Lake Wanaka, we’re only spending one night in this place...and a this point, we’re sorry we have to spend the one night. “Top 10” properties vary and this one is definitely sub-standard for a winter stay. As we leave the next morning, I see…only a few blocks from the “Top 10” a Wyndham Motel….every parking space is occupied…I see now where we should have stayed.

Even with my Top Ten Club Membership 10% discount…staying here was a mistake.

Room Tip: Choose a room at another motel or hotel.

Stayed in Campervan site in June. Nice friendly service, camp is spread out over a hill so is a little bit 'Mickey mouse'. Playground is way down the hill out of sight so you need to escort kiddies down to it and supervise as its adjacent to roads within campground. Free spa was good but shower not working there. Bathrooms pretty dated and showers on timer. Very very dark in the bathrooms in winter. If there was a better campground in Wanaka I would've stayed there but it seems there isn't :(

Not sure if we are reviewing the same park as previous travellers but have checked my receipt and it definately says "Wanaka Top 10 Holiday Park" so must be the same. We stayed right up the top of the hill in the campervan bays so can't comment on the cabins or tent sites.

Sure, it's a bit out of town and the roadworks (we stayed last day of April) caused a slow trip to & fro but the reception was friendly and helpful and we got a prime level site (park where you like Sir!) just in front of the amenities block overlooking the town and lake and snow clad mountains. Stunning!

At about dusk the wind blew in so hard that we felt the van rocking and it was bitterly cold. The shower/toilet block was basic but had good hot showers that were limited to 9 mins on a timer outside the door but we are used to that.

The kitchen was the best part having all the necessary appliances and good range of stove hobs etc. When we were there several other travellers were cooking and it was most convivial with plenty of room to cook and eat at the tables.

We used the dump station before leaving and it was well sited and adequate. In the morning the wind had abated and besides being freezing cold the view out our van over the lake was postcard perfect.

Wanaka is a beautiful place and has lots of attractions and the autumn trees were in all their splendid colour as was the lake and mountains.

We didn't have any real complaints about the "Top 10"

We stayed here for one night in a basic cabin, with two sets of bunks (one with a double bed underneath) and a table and chairs. The kitchen and bathrooms were at the other end of the same block so could be reached undercover if it was raining. Both were basic but adequate. There was also a laundry in the block, but we didn’t use it.

The kids loved the pool with a simple waterslide, and the playground, especially the huge trampoline. There was a TV lounge with internet pcs (paid access, you could pay for wifi too), but we didn’t use them either.

The site is a bit out of town, and not as new or nice as other Top 10s we stayed at in NZ, but was fine for one night.

While in NZ we stayed at 5 or 6 Top 10 Holiday Parks. I was very impressed with them! For those from the U.S. this is similar to the KOA campground chain there. These for the most part were even nicer than many of those.

That being said I agree wholeheartedly with each of the previous reviews. This campground was my least favorite of those I saw in NZ. While I wouldn't avoid it, I'd probably look for something else instead. We camped there so I don't have any insight on the rooms. The area for camping was ok. It was a large open field in the middle of the campground. It was quiet and the ground worked well for our tenting. I started out using the bathrooms that looked like they were designated for the tenters. It was a building with about 5 rooms that had a toilet, sink and shower in each. Men and women would use it. It was older and not very nice. I made sure not to make skin contact with the floor. I started using the other bathrooms in the campground during our stay which were a little bit nicer.

I agree that the staff here was very nice and very helpful. We were also able to drive to a lot of great stuff nearby (check out "Puzzling World"!), so the area itself is actually pretty great.

Room Tip: If camping, use the bathrooms used by those staying in rooms if you aren't comfortable in the te...
