We visited Mount Iron during Autumn in 2012. I had with me my 2.5 year old daughter and my Wife who was 4 months pregnant. It was a good workout for us. Throughout the walk, we can across many people (I'm guessing locals), who used it as a running circuit. They must be super fit to do runs like that each day!

This walk is easy to find. There is plenty of parking at the base (no charge). A previous review said to go anti-clockwise on the walk and that's definitely the right advice if you want stunning views of the lakes and mountains on the way down. The walk is not too demanding. It takes just under an hour to do the trek up to the top and about half the time to come down. But you could spend an age just taking in the glorious 360 degree views from the summit on a clear and sunny day. Take some water and your camera and this trip will definitely show you just how wonderful the scenery is here.

Easy to find trailhead outside of town. Walk is manageable if you are not the fittest or are pressed for time. Great views of lake on the way up.

Climbing Mt. Iron was a bit more steep than you would first expect. Put on good shoes that have a good grip. Don't go up to fast if your not used to steep walks, because you will only make yourself tired. Mt. Iron is infested with rabbits, You hear and see them everywhere. Once you get up the mountain (which takes about 50-60 minutes at an easy pace) you have a gorgeouw view of Wanaka and it's surroundings. It's especially nice at sunset. Mt Iron is just outside of Wanaka and the signs are not that clear. You have to look at the side of the road to find it. Definately worth it.
