Owner description: SIBERIA EXPERIENCE - Scenic Flight - Bush & Valley Walk -Jetboat Safari. Allow 4 hours to experience this unique New Zealand Wilderness Adventure in Mount Aspiring World Heritage National Park. Experience 3 of NZ's most popular activities in an exciting 4 hour encounter with nature. Operating since 1975 and described by many as a "MUST DO" Adventure. The scenic flight with Southern Alps Air begins from Makarora Valley(near Wanaka).Enjoy spectacular views from window seats of glaciers, waterfalls and plunging river valleys amongst the native forest and towering mountains of the Southern Alps. Your flight ends with landing amongst the mountains in the remote Siberia Valley where your 2.5-3hr walk begins. The freedom walk is 6.8km with a combination of flat, up-hill & down-hill sections. The track/trail is clearly defined and easy to follow as you set off across the flats and Siberia Stream and on to the track proper which leads you to the jetboat pick up point in the Wilkin Valley. Rendezvouz at the rivers edge at a pre-arranged time with Wilkin River Jets for a 30 minute scenic and thrilling ride back to where your Siberia Experience began. Suitable for all ages with an average/reasonably good fitness level. Easier walk for similar Fly-Walk-Jetboat Experience is Blue Pools Nature Experience - the trail is the same distance but basically flat.

“Flight, walk and jetboat”

About 1h drive from Wanaka, starts at 9.30pm and finishes at 2.30pm. Include a 25min plane ride over the mountains, 2h30 walk and a 30min jetboat ride back to starting point. We took our 19-month old and it was totally fine. Highly recommended.

“avoid prepaying the experience”
Reviewed December 26, 2011

we pre-booked the trip and were very excited to do the Siberia Experience but unfortunately the weather condition didn't allow us to flight in the Siberia Valley so we asked the refund. The management tryied to convince us to take another tour instead as they sustained that "it was flyable". We had to argue before they offered us to do the Siberia Experience the following day, hoping the weather condition would improve. The following day part of our group decided to take the flight anyway, even if the weather was pretty bad, the flight was very bumpy and few felt sick, not enjoyable at all. The walk in the forest was great, the Valley is very nice, but again when we arrived at the meeting point where we were supposed to be picked up, we had to wait 1 hour and it was very cold, the jet boat trip was kind of fun but not so exciting as espected. The staff of this company do not care at all of their clients, they just care of the money you pay, it is a shame this is the only way to explore this beautiful place.

If you want to get away from all the tourists and do something especially fun and memorable in New Zealand, then definitely give Siberia Experience a try!

It starts out with a ~30 minute scenic plane flight over the mountains and across the valley you will eventually be landing in. It was very windy up there, so if normal commercial airplane turbulence freaks you out, you might want to pass on this one.

After a thrilling landing on the "Siberia Valley International Airport", you get out and cross a freezing-cold glacial stream. My wife and I crossed it barefoot. About 5 steps in we couldn't feel our feet anymore and it's basically willpower that gets you to the other end. Very cold, yes, but a very exciting experience.

After getting our feet back to normal a long hike up, around and down the side of a mountain awaited us. Expect about 2-3 hours to finish this. The foot-path was fairly well-worn but there was a part about 15 minutes away from the Riverjet pick-up point where the trail kinda fizzles out and took a few minutes to find again. If you look up every now and then you'll notice that the trees have orange triangles to mark the path every so often.

Didn't have much of a problem with the sandflies at the Riverjet pick-up point, but some DEET and sunscreen are highly recommended anyways. The view at the end is amazing, with the green grass, river and white-capped mountain in the distance.

On the Riverjet ride back, watch out for blowing sand and a strong wind that can blow your glasses clean off your face. There are fun spins and a few photo ops along the way.

Definitely one of the best things I did in NZ!

“Siberia Experience was the highlight of my NZ trip”
Reviewed March 30, 2011

The Siberia Experience was the highlight of my trip to NZ. A group of 11 of us went out in three different groups. The staff was friendly and knowlegeable. We first took a 25 minute plane ride into the valley. We got great views of the mountains and glaciers. The pilot explained what we were looking at. We landed without trouble, crossed a glacial stream, and then hiked for three-four hours. The trail was more uphill then we expected and a good pair of hiking shoes (not boots) are necessary. Bring water and sunscreen. And of course a camera.

The hike was beautiful. We got to the end and waited for the jetboat. This was the only negative part. There are nasty sand flies at the jetboat pick up. They chewed us up and DEET didn't seem to stop them. The jetboat was 20 minutes late in picking us up, so we got destroyed by the flies. You might want to consider light pants to avoid the flies.

The jetboat was fun. We did some spins and shot through the river. Overall this was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

“Excellent scenery and value”
Reviewed February 6, 2011

This is a combination of a 25 minute flight through the mountains, a 2 1/2 hr hike in the Siberia valley and 30 minute jet boat ride. It's an excellent value as you get to see the Mt Aspire area from three different vantage points. They do fail to mention that there is a wade across an icy stream before the hike but it's also one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
