We visited Wanaka for the skiing but not much snow so we searched for alternative entertainment! Being ardent foodies this Taste of Central tour fitted the bill perfectly. This was a full day of tempting treats starting with canopies and wine tastings at a gorgeous little vineyard, onto Cromwell famous for its stone fruit for more tastings of goodies, then onto a cheesery with a great selection of local produced cheese, my favourite was the blue! The highlight of the day was a mouth watering 4 course lunch at another rustic but stylish vineyard with great ambiance. The dishes were chosen by the chef who uses local, seasonal ingredients to produce some very attractive and tasty plates. Finally, we headed to quaint little Arrowtown and as we didn’t have desert with our lunch we tried some tasty sweet treats. As well as the great food and wine, our guide John was a font of knowledge and he brought the area to life with his stories, very entertaining! He got the pace of the day just right too and we appreciated that we had time by ourselves to enjoy our lunch together. All in all if you enjoy quality food and you want to get a insiders feel for the area this tour is highly recommended.

Very comfortable travel, and a very friendly guide. Having visited various wineries and a very tasty platter lunch with amazing views, John offered the option of more winery visits or a trip to Arrowtown. Fudge, homemade pastry pies, beer tasting and spectacular Arrowtown scenery completed a wonderful day, thanks John. May I also recommend to visitors of Wanaka the Cheeky Monkey Cafe.

I sometimes chaff at organised tours as they can at times dawdle along too slow or race too fleetingly, but John's pace throughout our half day wine tour was perfect. We visited a number of wineries in the Cromwell and Bannockburn area, some of them my favourites, some I hadn't ventured to before. Plus we stopped for a leisurely lunch at Carrick, a vineyard I had heard much about yet had never visited, so was delighted to sit back and enjoy their wonderful lunch platter with a glass of their well chilled Sauvignon Blanc.

John has an impressive knowledge of the local geology and history, as well as having fascinating stories from the gold mining days, the early wine industry, Lord of the Rings snippets as well as some great local legends.

I can't recommend Lonely Mountain Tours highly enough. I thought we would be out for a few hours of driving around but John provided 5 hours of fun, laughter, friendly banter and some really, really great wines. Thanks John :)

Kia ora WanakaLakes. It was great having you on the tour, I'm glad you had fun :).
Knowing how knowledgeable you are about the area I'm pleased we were able to take you somewhere you hadn’t already visited! Good to hear the pace of the day was just right too. Having a max of 6 guests means we can keep things flexible, the fun part for us is that no tour is identical!
Best wishes John

John is a great guide, very knowledgeable. knows how to get to the best places - sights, hikes, food, wine, even Lord of the Rings locations.

gilzoizner, thanks for your recommendation. John has travelled extensively but choose to settle in Wanaka 13 years ago. He and our other guides share a real passion for this area, they really enjoy finding out about guests particular interests and using their local and broader knowledge to make sure everyone gets the best experience possible.
Best wishes.... Julie (Marketing Director)

On our Wanaka stopover, we booked a half day wine tour with Lonely Mountain Tours. It was a bit more expensive than some of the others but we discovered that the transport was very comfortable, the tour was longer and a scrummy lunch was included! We had a chilled afternoon trying out the all the wines at four different vineyards in Cromwell and Bannockburn, the Pinot Noir was definitely a winner. What really made this tour was that it was more than just a wine tour, John’s passion for the area was inspiring. If you want to experience the wine and get a really good feel for the area as well, this is the tour for you!

rjbinoz, thanks for your compliments :). Great to hear you enjoyed the Pinor Noir and the lunch. We think we have some really amazing local produce in the central otago region but there is so much more to central and and we all really love sharing our local insights with our guests.
Best wishes, John (Tour Director)
