Avalanche Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #12 of 53 Wanaka B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 30, 2010

Avalanche was our absolute favorite B&B we stayed during our 10 day journey through the South Island. Trish and Dave were such a warm and welcoming couple as was their home, and in a beautiful setting. We had everything we needed and woke up to an amazing view of the mountains and fresh homemade muesli, fruit salad, jams, muffins and cookies! They were both very helpful in giving advice for excellent restaurants around town and helped us plan out our day in Wanaka. Out of all the places we stayed at, we wished we could have more time at Avalanche. It really felt like home to us and we would be so happy to come back soon!

On our tour of the South Island we have stayed in many beautiful B&B's of which Avalanche in Wanaka was definetely our favourite place. We were so happy to have booked this place for 2 nights (instead of 1) as Wanaka has so many things to offer. Our hosts Trish and Dave were the most friendly people who were always open to give us interesting tips about places to visit, things to do or restaurants. We also very much appreciated the privacy they gave us so that we could fully enjoy our stay at their place.
Enjoying breakfast (delicious fruit salad, thanks Trish) in their garden and playing cricket (sorry, Dave, I forgot the name of the game) under the stars at night, it was just perfect.

A spacious well appointed ground floor apartment. Open plan living, dining, bedroom with other bedrooms on the same level. Lovely rural/alpine view. Trish and Dave are great hosts. Nice touches like home baked muffins and yummy home made muesli for breakfast. Highly reccomended.

We stayed three nights at Avalanche B&B in late February and experienced one of the best B&Bs of our 5-week trip around the South Island. Trish and Davy have thought of every detail to make guests feel pampered and appreciated. The room--more like a small apartment, really, with some cooking facilities--is large, bright, perfectly decorated, and very comfortable. It looks out onto a patio and manicured garden, with views of the mountains in the distance. The bathroom is large and has a terrific shower. If I had to name the best part, it would be Trish's breakfasts, which she brings to the room the day before. We had delicious homemade muffins, fresh-squeezed juice, fresh fruit, cereals, jams, toast, yogurt, and great coffee every morning. (We like the growing practice of B&Bs here to supply a continental breakfast in the room, so you can wake whenever you like and start the day in a more relaxed way.) We hated to leave, feeling right at home with our friendly and helpful hosts, who seemed more like friends by the end of our visit. For the price, my guess is that this has to be the top B&B on the South Island (this was our fourth trip to New Zealand). And Wanaka is a lovely town that makes a good base for exploring the region--a much saner choice than staying at a bland motel in crowded Queenstown.

After our 5 weeks of staying in some excellent B&Bs, this was up there with the very best. Warm welcome and very helpful local information; Trish & Davey could not have been more helpful and generous with their time. Lovely spacious self-contained room with well equipped kitchen area and lounge area, together with a brilliant BBQ and outside area. Trish's breakfast supplies of fresh fruit, home baking et al were excellent. Enjoyed sundowners and BBQing, sitting outside in a peaceful garden with wonderful views of Mount Avalanche. Wanaka and this bnb are stunning, and need more than 2 - 3 nights - so we'll have to come back! Brilliant day's walking - Rob Roy glacier walk.

Avalanche is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the outskirts of Wanaka. The hosts were warm and friendly and full of information about the surrounding area. We occupied a huge lower level room in their house with sliding glass doors that lead out to a private patio and lovely gardens. The view of vineyards and mountains from this room/patio is stunning. We simply wanted to sit down and just stay there for a very long time. There is a table and chairs in the room, a kitchenette, couch and library. Breakfast is all prepared the night before and left in your mini-frig for whenever you are ready for it. We found this a wonderful leisurely way to start the day. This is a great place for a couple or family to stay.

Superb location with fab mountain views from very private patio in a delightful and well-tended garden, luxury accommodation and facilities, including use of bikes, with real attention to detail. Wonderful breakfast provisions, home cooked and beautifully presented, to wake up to and greedily consume!
Our hosts, Trish and Davey, couldn't have been more caring and helpful with nothing too much trouble. They made our 4 day stay truly memorable.
Of all the accommodation we stayed in during our 6 week trip, this was by far the best - we just didn't want to leave.
