I was quite apprehensive about staying at a hostel since we are not college kids any more! In fact we had a one and half year old with us and I was worried about noise and other issues. But I want to reassure all families who are trying to do Wanaka on a budget, this is the place to stay! The kitchens were very nice and everyone quite good about keeping everything clean and we got really lucky with our room. Our windows faced Lake Wanaka, it was fantastic waking up to the view. The YHA is a block from the lakefront, there is a nice park just in front of it. And Wanaka is wonderful to relax and unwind from the frantic traveling you will do trying to cover New Zealand in one trip!

Stayed here for a couple of nights with a friend in a twin ensuite room which was clean and very comfortable. Reception staff were friendly and very helpful. Kitchen facilities were excellent and there was a good spacious lounge with a warm fire with views out over the lake. Good location, just a short walk to the shops and restaurants. Would have no hesitation in staying here again and would definitely recommend it for a hostel stay in Wanaka.

Our dorm had 2 bunk beds and an en suite. Found the room rather cold because there was only a small heater provided. Thankfully, there are extra blankets. Luv the spacious kitchen. Plenty of room to spare even though so many people were cooking at the same time. We could park right at the door step, so it was easy to handle the luggage. Overall, i had a pleasant stay.

We had a twin ensuite room. Both the room and the bath were a bit on the rustic side, but they were clean and adequate for our needs. Minor annoyance -- although there was a hair dryer, the one electric outlet was nowhere near a mirror. The location is very good -- easy walking to restaurants, lakeside park, etc.. Nice view out the front. The hostel was very busy, so this may be the reason, but the cleanliness of the kitchen left something to be desired. At the other hostels where we stayed the guests seemed very conscientious about cleaning up after themselves, etc. plus the staffs did a better job of monitoring the kitchens. In the morning the kitchen counters had pools of water with dead flies floating, and the staff wasn't even close in keeping up with overflowing garbage and recycling containers. In summary, it's okay but with a little effort could be better.

This was the first time we had tried a YHA hostel in New Zealand, and this is probably the first backpackers that we have really felt was fit for purpose. It was just brilliant. Firstly location. Only a few minutes from town and the lake. The view from the common area of the lake and mountains in amazing.

The facilities were excellent. The kitchen is huge with about 10 separate hobs and lots of worktops, massive frdiges and food sorage areas. The common room is really nice, with a fire and lots of space, a good few tables and of course the view. There is a really large TV room with movies every night, intenret room with good computers equipped for Skype and also with USB and camera memory card ports. Internet is a little pricey - $4 for an hour. Reception was always staffed and very helpful, expect for one girl who told us it was a 15 min walk to Rippon Vineyard - it's NOT, about 45 minutes at least!

Our room was a double ensuite. At $89 this was one of the most expensive places we have stayed but the room was nice, a decent size and serviced every day. When the rest of the facilities are so good you really don't mind paying that little extra.

In addition to everything else there was just a really warm atmosphere about the place. The mix of people staying there, from young backpackers through to elderly ramblers, with everything in between, was the most varied I have seen on our travels and added to the dynamic. Maybe we were just lucky with our timing.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Purple Cow. In many ways it feels more like a hotel than a hostel. We would definitely go back.
