This location was recommended by the cafe keeper in Makarora, and we are so glad for it! Parking was limited but it was not busy when we arrived (the highway north of us was still closed due to a recent washout). The walk through the forest was magical -- green velvet moss covers much of the growth, from root to tree top. All manner of trees grow here -- pine, palm and deciduous. There is a grade downwards so that the walk back along path and boardwalk can be a challenge, but take your time, enjoy some of the benches along the way and the bird song. At the pools themselves, there were a few brave jumpers from the walking bridge, but it's a glacial stream (thus the turquoise of the water). Of all the many places visited in New Zealand on both the north and south island, the woods immediately by the pools were the only place we encountered biting bugs. Cover up or use protection. The Blue Pools is a Toyota Kiwi Guardians site.

The beauty of the blue pools is worth the walk through the lovely tree-lined track! Was so lovely just sitting on the edge and watching everyone enjoying this beautiful place!

Very popular with tourists. Limited car parking. Take walking shoes.
Awesome water, amazing views. Safe spots for paddling, or deeper for swimming.
Water is very cold.

A pleasant 30 minute walk along a well maintained path through forest from the overflow car park. A couple of swing bridges add to the attraction. Blue pools was busy on a hot and sunny day but it was fun watching people jump into the pools from the bridge.

Only a short walk from the carpark. Well worth the stop. You walk through a forest then over a swing bridge. The pools are an amazing colour. Beware there's heaps of sandflies so wear long trousers or put heaps of insect spray on. My daughters found out the hard way!
