Our two night stay at the Heartland Lodge was our favourite in the whole of our holiday in NZ. Jim and Mary made us so welcome that we felt part of the family. The breakfasts were awesome. On our last morning Jim loaned me some of his fishing tackle so that I could try my hand at NZ trout. On my return at about 10:00am Jim made a wonderful breakfast for a weary but elated fisherman - how's that for service!!
The accommodation at Heartland Lodge is really spacious and comfortable, with guests being able to share their large lounge area in an evening.
Twizel & Heartland Lodge are a great stopping off point between Queenstown and Christchurch, but more importantly it is a very useful base for exploring the Mount Cook mountain area and has a good choice of restaurants. For Fishermen it is a must for wilderness trout fishing. Thoroughly recommended and we will go back again for fishing and walking. Many thanks to Mary & Jim.

We chose this retreat as an half way point from Christchurch to Queenstown and were not disappointed with the first class reception we received. On arrival to the lodge we had homemade cookies. There were only three members of our party, but the lodge had enough room for at least another three. The lodge is so peaceful and quiet and we had the best sleep of all our nights of our travels. We had a home cooked breakfast on our first morning, which offered cereal, full cooked breakfast, toast, fruit yoghurt and croissants with homemade jams (outstanding). Jim and Mary could not have made our stay any better, we would definitely recommend this lodge, perfection.

Room tip: Everything just excellent.

This is an excellent run by two lovely people Jim and Mary. Twisle is situated close the the magnificent mountain scenery of Mt Cook so the Lodge serves as a wonderful place to relax after a hard day enjoying the many outdoor activities that are possible in the area. Nothing is too much trouble for this couple and they are well equipped to give advice on the local attractions of the area. Mary's breakfasts are worth the visit alone and one can dine in or bookings made to good local restaurants. Jim loves to chat. He enjoys the outdoor life. He has good local knowledge of the local attractions. Fishing guides can be arranged and advice on walks or cycling paths given. I would highly recommend this facility as a wonderful place to stay.

Room tip: All rooms are excellent with views. Families would like the convenience of the adjacent independent building

A wonderful quiet location on the edge of the forest for a very spacious and inviting Lodge with most hospitable hosts - Mary and Jim Powell. The rooms are beautifully and elegantly furnished and have views of their garden and surrounding mountains. Jim and Mary invite you to visit with them in front of their fireplace and get acquainted with them - both teachers and Jim is a retired horticultural teacher from Invercargill. Mary has a beautifully furnished kitchen and is an accomplished chef. We had 2 dinners she prepared and each one was excellent. She was willing to share printed copies of her receipes with us - a good memory of a lovely stay. Definitely a 'repeat'.

Room tip: all rooms are excellent - have heated floors in the bathroom with a spa and marble walls beautifully decorated rooms with one being more masculine and one more feminine There is also a separate building which has more rooms to accommodate up to 10 persons

Jim and Mary have a lovely and spacious home in Twizel, much nicer than we expected. Just to give you an idea, they have a nice piece of sculpture on the stairway landing and we had heated floors in our bathroom. We arrived on a cold Sunday afternoon in winter, so we really appreciated sitting with them in front of the fire and having a glass of wine. Jim made us a very nice breakfast of pancakes and bacon while Mary went off to teach school. It was a restful retreat in the midst of winter.
