“We can tell all our criends we stayed in a castle now”
Reviewed May 3, 2007

When planning our first trip abroad I gave my husband the opportunity
to put 3 things on our itinerary and one was to stay overnight in a castle. The Castle Townshend at Castletownshend made our trip extra special. The Castle was just as we expected, kind of creaky, dark and
filled with centuries of souveniers from travels and heirlooms. The Castle has remained in the Townshend family since it was built and the pride that Ann takes in her heritage is evident. The Castle sits right on the bay and has a beautiful view. The rooms were a little cramped due to the oversized furniture you would expect and that a bath had to be carved out to accomodate guests, but everything was clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the view from our window was
great. We had been warned that castles were drafty, damp and cold, but this was not true of our accomodations eventhough we visited in April. The big surprise was the grounds which we were allowed to explore including a 5 star fort and tower ruins and a wonderfully beautiful church next door with cemetery which had postcards of the stained glass windows and history of the church for sale for a fair price. The cherry trees were in full bloom and everything was so peaceful and quiet that after our tour of the grounds we just sat on a bench and looked out onto the harbor that evening. The next morning before breakfast we went back to the church
and got some of our best pictures of the trip with the morning light hitting the steeple. What a wonderful inclusion in our trip which did not break the budget. And we can tell all our friends now that we
stayed overnight in a castle. How great is that!

Excellent vfm accomodation clean comfortable and spacious. The accomodation is run by a rather eccentric Brit lady who was absolutely charming.
We chose Mountain Chalets on the recommendation of Queenstown Travel Centre who in fact booked all our hotels in NZ (ask for Leonie)The Chalets are easy to find just off the main road close to the Heliport for Mt Cook heliflights, which we took advantage of.
We also booked a Pelennor Fields Trip, our guide was a lovely guy called Vernon, he is very knowledgeable having worked on the sets of Lord of the Rings.
All in all a great place to stay and a lovely friendly little town. But then again whats not friendly in NZ.

  • Liked — The owner
  • Disliked — Only spent one night there, not enough.
  • Tips/Secrets — Talke a drive up along Lake Pukaki, and wonder why its so blue.

We stayed here for 2 nights in May 2005. It was vey cheap (£35 per night) so I wondered what we'd get. We got a cosy little A-frame chalet that was clean and excellent value for money. The kitchenette was tiny but fine for making a bit of breakfast. There was a heater in the bedroom as well as a portable one which we used to warm up the bathroom in the mornings as it was winter and chilly out. There was a handy coin laundry and the host was very friendly and helpful. It was just a couple of minutes drive to the shops and restaurants. Be warned that Twizel at night is rather low on excitment! I can recommend Lou's Fish and Chips and there are two restaurants and a bar. It is however a beautiful part of the country and and an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan there is a tour of the location used for the battle of Pellennor Fields bookable at the information centre in town, I really enjoyed it.
