We are so glad we chose to stay here rather than at the Hermitage for our visit of the Mt. Cook area. Since the Hermitage is "base camp" for hiking and other ventures up into the glaciers, it gets very crowded with tour buses streaming in and out throughout the day. The wide open vistas on a hike are such a welcome respite from the hub-bub. The Mackenzie is a large hotel, but not at all busy when we visited. Very calm, clean, spacious rooms, lovely park like setting, friendly staff, ample breakfast buffet. We ordered from the menu for dinner and the salmon was delicious. A great two day stay in the area.
