“what noise?”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

We stayed for new years and have good and bad things to say about the place. Great memories catching up with friends. Awesome new shower and toilet block. BUT and its a big BUT, dont tell everyone that they can camp anywhere they like and then threaten eviction when we have a few drinks and someone around us gets a bit precious at 11pm between Christmas and new years. The camping ground is huge and a simple solution would be to put the noisy ones away one side of the camp and the families at the other end. I would however note that our group had 9 children under 3 and none of them woke up so we cant have been that loud.

Room Tip: Down by the new toilet and shower block.

Being on a self-drive tour, we arrived at Lake Tekapo to discover there was no room at the inn - any of the inns - so we were directed to the Holiday Park at Twizel - the only accommodation available for many kilometres in any direction. We were not hopeful, but fairly desperate. However, we found a little gem. The Ruataniwha Holiday Park provides a range of accommodation options, and we were fortunate to secure rooms in the recently renovated motel section. Clean, spacious, quiet and situated adjacent to the lake, enabling a beautiful dawn walk before setting off for more spectacular views.

The cabins are no bigger than a garden shed, a door that does not seal properly so flying cockroaches came in along with Mosquitos so not a good nights sleep. The following night we stayed in the motel, which is new and very spacious there was just no comparison between the two so do yourself a favour and stay in the motel.

Stayed at this park initially in a campervan & then later in a tourist cabin. Very much enjoyed the hospitality of Tony - a fantastic bloke who took the time to drive us around & show us things we were interested in. The tourist cabins are basic but contain all you need with very comfy beds. The communal kitchen is great & the hot showers with awesome water pressure are a god-send when the weather is cold! The park is clean & tidy & situated by the lake a few kilometres out of town. Other people have commented that the park is a bit bare and rocky. This is true, but I think they are forgetting that the temperatures here in the winter can get down to minus 10 or 15 degrees. This has something of an effect on the terrain. I was very thankfully for the kind hospitality I received when staying here & will happily return again in the future.

We have stayed in double Tourist cabin . There was a bunk bed : double plus single. The mattress was horrible. The walls were peeling and we were afraid to touch the window so it wouldn't be broken. There was a TV in the room that we thought would rather be there as an antique decoration than something worse mentioning "TV in room". We have stayed in much better holiday parks/backpackers during our visit in South Island for the same price and even for the lower price.

After being disappointed at the lack of 'family facilities' at another Twizel camping ground, we went to Lake Ruataniwha holiday park and were so pleased we did. A very warm welcome, heaps of space to choose from, and lots to keep the kids happy. We were in a tent and found a lovely spot among the trees, away from others, so it was peaceful, quiet and sheltered. The kids biked happily, played on the bouncy castle and the playground. Our kids aged 5-14yrs were all happy, and didn't want to leave. Ablutions and amenities were all very clean and tidy. We would recommend families to go there, and we will definitely be going back. I have read the other comments, and as long as you can put up with the space, some odd lengths of grass and oldish looking cabins, then you'll enjoy it like we did.

We booked here with mixed feelings as we had read reviews and were a bit concerned re permanent residents and basic facilities. However we decided to stay here as heard that camp in town was crowded and noisy.

Well we were pleasantly surprised, it is a beautiful setting by the Lake, of course you can't see the Lake from most sites as you are among the trees. It is a big camp with plenty of room so you are not hard up against your neighbour. We were camping and did find it a bit hard to get the tent pegs into the stony ground however ground was dry and level.

The trees were great for protection from sun and wind.

Facilities were fine, well cleaned and maintained if a bit dated. They were warm and dry and despite peak period there were not long queues.

Kitchen was perhaps a bit small for time of year and we were very disappointed there was not freezer space for slicker pads or ice bottles.

Otherwise great place to stay especially with kids and for fishing, boating and biking
