Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Yanuca Island
Reviewed January 14, 2010

Just returned from Shangri-La Fijian after a 6 day holiday in Fiji. We are very pleased with the hotel especially the friendly staff.
We stayed in a Superior Ocean View room with two double beds, big enough for our family of three. The exterior of the building looked a bit tired as some others have written, but the furniture and fixings in the room were new and well maintained. The best thing in the room for us was the free broadband internet, so remember to bring your laptop if you do not want to wait at the internet centre which only has four computers for the whole resort.
The best thing about the resort was the staff, who are always friendly and ready to say a cheerful "Bulla" when seeing you. However, some of the staff at the watersports centre were not as helpful as others, and looked a bit slack.
The cost of the food was of five star standard. We booked the rooms through the website of the hotel and took advantage of the Bonus Choice package which included daily buffet dinner and breakfast. This made a huge difference in terms of the cost of the meals. If you want cheaper meals you can also try the restaurant at the Gecko's Resort opposite to the Shangri La. There is also a restaurant called Tomlous which supposedly is very good. We didn't know about this restaurant until our hired car driver told us on our way to the airport. The resort staff are not too keen to tell you where these restaurants are. Ask the hired car or taxi drivers to take you there instead if you want to try them.
The buffet was quite good. They did have different food almost every day and had an excellent seafood buffet dinner on Wednesday and Friday, so take that into consideration when booking, as they do not advertise this.
Everything that is not free is quite expensive. We tried kayaking which was free and enjoyable. The tennis courts were free but we had to pay 10 fiji dollars for a racket. I bet they expected the guests to bring their own rackets from the other side of the world :) The bike riding was good but we had to pay 11 dollars for hire of a bike, and many of the bikes had flat tires or faulty brakes. As many people do, you can choose just to stay at the pool or the beach for the whole day. The pools were excellent, but if you want to take a cold dip on a very hot day, you should do it at the beach, as the pool water can be quite warm.
The tour desk do not offer many options. We tried the Coralrail trip which was special. Or you can ask the hire car desk to suggest to you what other sight seeking activities you can have.
The hotel is renowned for its family friendliness so expect seeing kids everywhere but the resort is huge, so you can always find a quiet spot, if you want to.
Overall I recommend this resort to families with children if budget is not a major concern. We are pleased that we chose the Shangri-La Fijian for our first Fijian holiday.

My husband & I went to the Shangri La for a friends wedding in October, and would
reccommend it very highly. The rooms were very attractive-we were in the Golden Cowrie
wing which offered a magnificent view that was quite private. A number of the wedding group stayed at the ocean wing which was more family oriented. There is an adults only pool for those that wish to chill out without the kids ( I was one of them!), but the resort
offers a fabulous holiday for families as well. If you choose to dine at the restaurants
early evening, you will find there are lots of kids around, but if you want a change of
pace, go 'Fiji" time...a little later, and a little more relaxed. We found the service to be extremely good & the Fijiaan people were just beautiful...nothing was too much
trouble. My husband had never been out of Australia, and had not been looking forward
to the trip-half way through, he was planning the next visit, We found it to be very reasonable price-wise, and did not have to go without a thing we wanted..
We will be back

Just got back from spending 7 days at the Shangri La Resort. My wife and our three children aged 13yrs 5 yrs and 3 yrs old had an awesome time. Loved the staff who made us feel at home with their warm welcome and friendly smiles. Not once did we complain about the staff because they all went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Special thanks to the KIDS CLUB CREW of ALFRED and LIVIA who looked after our two little ones. The baby sitting service was great. We used it twice for 3 hrs each time so my wife could go out for dinner and we had no complaints with the sitter SALEISHA. BIU and the fellow porters were great with anyting we needed. The food was good and the options of entertainment available was fantastic. Already planning our next trip back. Thank you SHANGRI LA. RESORT.

Well where do I begin. We were unfortunate enough to stay in an ocean view room that stunk of mould ...do not know how this resort has a 4 star rating (very misleading)..it should be 3 stars and that's being generous. Ocean view rooms are ridiculously far from everything in the resort. We would call for a buggy to drive us to the restaurants, pool, kids club...practically everywhere. Food is of high standard people are great, but there is no communication between staff....food at the restaurant can take up to an hour or more on some days for no apparant reason......u ask staff for something and they tell u they will find out and never get back to u and when confronted they blame each other.Never call home from your room. Calls to Syd are $5 a minute......people travelling with meal deals make sure u check ur bill carefully before u check out... they charge u an extra $10 per adult for dinner and $60 extra for christamas dinner and new years. Kidsclub was a big disappointment. Programs look great on paper but they never do what they program. When u ask the staff why r thr kids not doing the scavenger hunt. for example...they reply there isnt enough kids...but the resort is full of kids but the children refuse to go there cause its boring....on the odd occasion when they do follow the program if a frog race is programed 1 minute and the activity is over. In the evening they have a night program for children and its runs from 7- 9 pm most of this time is taken up watching a movie....Im on bloody vacation i dont want my kids watching TV, they can watch TV at home...All kidsclub staff need to go they just seem like they couldnt be bothered. Will not go back there again...if I pay for 4 star I demand 4 Star and thats not what get here.

This was the biggest dissapointment from the moment we stepped into the entrance of Shangri la.
We were greeted with waiting 1 hr before we could check in and had two people in the cue infront of us.
We were then lead to an ocean view room that smelt like urine, the floor was so dirty and sticky, the shower had soap scum all over it and the benches had coffee stains everywhere. The TV was broken for the whole time we were there, the hairdryer was ripped out of the wall and took 4 days of constant calls to fix these and still the TV remained broken after 4 different technician visits.
I went with my 9 year old daughter, this was her first trip overseas and picked this location as Fiji caters for kids.
In this place the kids were running the place, breaking equipment, running a muck in the buffet area. There was no lifeguard or anyone controlling this unruly behavior at all. The staff were complaining that they were not even getting a lunch break, and you could tell this was true as they looked so unhappy..
The food was so disgusting, my daughter and I are still trying to get over the horrible sickly feeling in our stomachs. The internet area has three monotors for the whole hotel I reccommend you wake up at 4:00am and should be able to get on and do your banking etc..
After nicely requesting towels and tea replenished each day, it ended up getting the better of us and transferred to the Sofitel. Our holiday improved dramatically and wished I would have made that decision on the first day.
Management ha... unbelievable... They also could not care less.
We saved up to enjoy a short but luxury stay at Fiji, 4:5 star????? who rated this I wonder.
This was nowhere near a 4.5 star establishment. I may as well have stayed in a backpackers accomodation. I have travelled alot and stayed in many hotels and by far this is the worst place I have ever stayed at and would totally suggest other accomodation for your holiday.

If you want an overpriced vacation with a mediocre ocean, outdated rooms, and expensive restaurants then the Shangri La is for you! Oh don't forget that 90% of the travellers here have several children under the age of 5. If you're a family and want to get ripped off, then come here. As a couple - STAY AWAY! Better to stay at the Intercontinental on the Coral Coast, or better yet at the Westin on Denarau Island and then take day trips all the time!

This was our second holiday at The Fijian & we were not disappointed. The rooms have been upgraded & the standard was high. We intially had an ocean view room but upgraded to a Beach Bure. The Bure was great for our needs with 3 children. It consisted of 2 separate rooms with a living area located right on the lagoon. The food is good & the kids eat free package is an incentive to stay there. We stayed in the first week of December & it was reasonable quiet. This made our holiday even more pleasurable as the resort can get pretty busy during peak periods.
