“Just Back after 7 days”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

After reading the reviews I was a little nervous about the Shangri la but I needn't have worried - we went as a group of 10 (Grandma and pa and 4 adults as well as 4 kids ranging from 11-3yrs) and had a great stay.
I'll start with the Cons - for those with without kids go for the Ocean view side (but it is windy there) as it is quieter; for those that have a disability that may make walking tough be wary as the complex is a good size and there are stairs. Saying that the Lagoon side which is GREAT for the kids was still relatively quiet. The blocks have only one stairway up into them - to nit pick it would be great if they had staircases at both ends. The fire walking/dancing is a bit OTT and this is where two of our adults got "ill" (think it was the chicken from the hungi). The major issue with the resort is the price of food/snacks - TAKE PLENTY OF SNACKS FOR THE KIDS... a small punnet of hot ships is $9FJ,a scoop of ice cream is $9FJ or a big packet of crisps is $12FJ. The Beach front Café was expensive and the menu (besides fish night) was poor. The school and village tour was interesting to see but I had the feeling of a zoo/show... role them out for the tourist scenario.
Lastly the pool loungers...There wasn't enough but there never usually is. People were getting up at 7am to claim loungers that they then didn't lay on until 10-11am if not later.
Now the Pro's - the food was good (better than Plantation Island which we went to 2 years ago) some reviews were negative so I was nervous but the buffet system was great for the kids. Don't expect Michelin star food and you will be happy. Breakfasts were great - get the kids to carbo load up and it may save on that expensive lunch. Maybe do the food deal for 4 nights and the remaining days wing it with a trip to Geckos or a pizza on the beach night.
The beach was excellent for the kids and the lagoon pool was also a favorite spot. You will need to bring your own snorkel as they don't provide them. Snorkeling is a touch off the beach but fish life was ok.
Overall we were very happy with the resort and would go back there.

Room Tip: Ground floor would be the way to go with kids; Plenty of Snacks.

Stayed here June/July 2014 with husband for a relaxing getaway and that's exactly what we got.
We have been to Fiji before (stayed in Denarau), however, we wanted to stay somewhere with a beautiful beach and that's what we got!
We stayed in the Lagoon view wing - on the third floor and loved it. When we arrived and got taken to our room we didn't think we'd need to tip the bellboy but he hung around so make sure you have some cash! (It didn't bother us at all, but I don't know what we would've done if we didn't have any money on us)
Eating: When we stay at resorts we expect resort prices so don't complain that it's expensive as it is more pricey than some other places, however we found it's not as expensive as Denarau prices and still cheaper than Australia.
Activities: Our only regret is that we didn't come with family as there was loads to do! Some activities you need to pay for- others it's free for half an hour then you pay after that. Either way there's lots to do for all age groups.
Chi Spa: I cannot say enough good things about this place! I have been to many dayspas around the world and this was amazing... you MUST do the Dusk til Dawn treatment if there with a loved one - absolutely amazing and very reasonable. (Book online before you go and you get a 20% discount!)
One of the only things that I struggled with were the geckos that were all over the place at nighttime - I understand it's a tropical place, they're harmless etc etc... but it's just one of my 'things' that I have to deal with... but I feel it's important to mention!
The staff: Amazing, gentle, sweet, cheeky, amazing with kids, friendly, relaxed. If you have a bit of extra money I think it's worth mentioning that a tip for your housekeeper at the end of your stay would be greatly appreciated.
Overall, grab your family, loved one or friends and go! It was so fun and we are planning to return regularly.

Room Tip: Tips from an elderly lady who has been there more times than she can remember: If staying in the La...

This is a large family orientated resort on a small Island connected to the coral coast mainland. While large in size, the facilities are well spread out over this large and beautiful landscape. You have no real feeling of the high occupancy rate due to the large, magnificent sprawling tropical gardens. The staff are super friendly and nothing is too much trouble. All the restaurants have spectacular coral coast ocean and reef views and are all 5 Star with busy professional and friendly wait staff.
Diving was great as was the snorkeling , parasailing and sailing.
We all loved it, its a very special place!

10 days June / July 2014 with wife and two sons 11 and 9. Our second holiday here, the first being 5 years ago. Stayed in family room both times, which for two children is perfect. Ground floor room opens to large open area close to everything. We looked around before rebooking here but, whilst not cheap, seemed good value compared to other Fijian resorts. The kids program is good, but better for younger kids and often the program was different to what was advertised, but hey, it's Fiji. Food was good. I'd recommend the resort.

We spent a week here in mid-late-January 2014 and considering the discounted price we paid online, we were VERY pleased with our stay (if we had paid the full price advertised on the company website, I might feel otherwise).

This is generally a resort for families (and there are plenty of good facilities and attractions for children), but if you time your stay for the shoulder season (like we did), you will certainly be able to avoid the hustle and bustle and noise. That being said, the Resort is large enough that I'm sure you could find a nice, quiet spot if you look hard enough.

The food was, on the whole, pretty decent. Buffet breakfasts at the adults-only restaurant offered a wide variety of breakfast foods and an impressive selection of fresh, delicious fruits. We weren't overly impressed with the food at Beach Bar/Grill (lunch and dinner menu items both). Dinner at the Golden Cowrie offered the best food (and service) of any of the restaurants at the Resort!

The service in all of the Resort's facilities were... well, on Fiji Time. haha! Service was never very prompt, but I think that is a cultural thing, so I'm not complaining - just commenting. Despite the slow service, it always was accompanied by a smile. Everywhere you go, you are greeted by all staff with a great big, "BULA". The room stewards were rather unremarkable. The cleaning schedule was unpredictable and less than thorough most of the time. The "Bula Boys" as we started to call the staff that worked at the gateway to the Resort entrance were some of the nicest, friendliest, and most talkative of all - these guys were a real treat to interact with during our stay!

The Resort grounds were well-kept, clean, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing.
