We were not happy at all here. We had a 10-15min walk everywhere in the heat to the pool, restaurant, day spa, lobby, etc. The restaurant choices were very ordinary and food poor - far from 5*. The bed was rock hard. The kids club was miles away and didnt offer much. There wasnt bath facilities in the room either, we couldn't wait to leave for a better hotel.

Stayed: March 2014

The Fijian people are just delightful. They are very gentle and have a very strong sense of community and pride. I highly recommend spending some quality time with them. The beds are like sleeping on a cloud.

We stayed at the Shangri-La the first week of March 2014 for our honeymoon. We had read mixed reports about the resort so were a little apprehensive. Our welcome was great. The Fijians are such welcoming people. We had a superior ocean view room on the top floor of the Golden Cowrie Wing which was fantastic. We didn't hear another person the whole time we were there and it was central to everything. After walking around the resort to check everything out I felt this was definitely the best section of the resort to be in.
The food was great. Breakfast was part of our package and we went to the adults only Golden Cowrie restaurant for breakfast each day. The buffet was great there. My wife got a flower in her each morning and it had a view out over the ocean. We loaded up at breakfast and didn't feel hungry for the rest of the day. If we did have lunch it was just a bowl of wedges at the Takali Terrace, which was right next to the Adults Only pool. Such a great spot. We always found a lounge chair to lie in, the staff were great at asking us for drinks and bringing them to us. For dinner I recommend you stay away from the Lagoon Terrace buffet, the food was great but for the two of us it cost $110 AUD. The Takali Terrace is the best option. Thai, Chinese or Indian food and it cost us $50 AUD. We each had a main that was enough to fill us and a couple of drinks. A massive difference when staying a whole week. The Bilo Bar was a great place for happy hour drinks. We also met a local 'David' who included everyone in 'Kava Time'.
The internet connection was non existent which was our only downfall on the trip. Even the internet in the internet café was painfully slow and non existent at times.
I'd also recommend that when you get to the airport you buy bottles of water and some alcohol or snacks. Beer is about $5.50, champagne $8 and a cocktail about $16. Not over the top and comparative to home but works out much cheaper if you get it duty free at the airport.
Overall I would definitely recommend the Shangri-La to stay at. We had a great time. So relaxing and nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room in the Golden Cowrie wing if you are a couple.

Stayed end of February in an Oceanview room. We opted to upgrade from Lagoon view room ($30FJD extra per night) and glad we did as each time we returned to our room, we felt like we were 'out of the rat race'. The room was lovely with a great view from the balcony. Even though it wasn't school holiday season, the resort was full of kids. We had dinner at the buffet on our first night and didn't eat there again. The food was very ordinary and overpriced and the kids were noisy. Try the other restaurants. The food is better and they're not so noisy. We spent a lot of our time at the adults only pool. It's quiet and the staff there are great. I was very disappointed at the lack of nightly entertainment as at other Fijian resorts we've stayed at, the entertainment has been great i.e a different cultural experience each night. The Shangri La offers a 'disco' each night and once a week a cultural show that will cost you in excess of $100FJD. It seems to be all about money at this resort. I wouldn't recommend this resort if you have mobility problems. There's quite a bit of walking to do just getting from A to B, and plenty of trip hazards. I took a fall one night because of poor lighting and a very uneven pathway.
The beach area is quite small, not what I was expecting from an island. The rest is rocks and coral. You have to pay to hire a push bike.
My most memorable moment was being taught by Alfred ( down by the main pool )to make a grass skirt. What a beautiful person he is.
All in all, an ok holiday but I'd rather a smaller, more personal resort. I wouldn't return.

Stayed: February 2014, traveled with friends
