“Delightful People”

The Fijian people are just delightful. They are very gentle and have a very strong sense of community and pride. I highly recommend spending some quality time with them. The beds are like sleeping on a cloud.

We stayed at the Shangri-La the first week of March 2014 for our honeymoon. We had read mixed reports about the resort so were a little apprehensive. Our welcome was great. The Fijians are such welcoming people. We had a superior ocean view room on the top floor of the Golden Cowrie Wing which was fantastic. We didn't hear another person the whole time we were there and it was central to everything. After walking around the resort to check everything out I felt this was definitely the best section of the resort to be in.
The food was great. Breakfast was part of our package and we went to the adults only Golden Cowrie restaurant for breakfast each day. The buffet was great there. My wife got a flower in her each morning and it had a view out over the ocean. We loaded up at breakfast and didn't feel hungry for the rest of the day. If we did have lunch it was just a bowl of wedges at the Takali Terrace, which was right next to the Adults Only pool. Such a great spot. We always found a lounge chair to lie in, the staff were great at asking us for drinks and bringing them to us. For dinner I recommend you stay away from the Lagoon Terrace buffet, the food was great but for the two of us it cost $110 AUD. The Takali Terrace is the best option. Thai, Chinese or Indian food and it cost us $50 AUD. We each had a main that was enough to fill us and a couple of drinks. A massive difference when staying a whole week. The Bilo Bar was a great place for happy hour drinks. We also met a local 'David' who included everyone in 'Kava Time'.
The internet connection was non existent which was our only downfall on the trip. Even the internet in the internet café was painfully slow and non existent at times.
I'd also recommend that when you get to the airport you buy bottles of water and some alcohol or snacks. Beer is about $5.50, champagne $8 and a cocktail about $16. Not over the top and comparative to home but works out much cheaper if you get it duty free at the airport.
Overall I would definitely recommend the Shangri-La to stay at. We had a great time. So relaxing and nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room in the Golden Cowrie wing if you are a couple.

Stayed end of February in an Oceanview room. We opted to upgrade from Lagoon view room ($30FJD extra per night) and glad we did as each time we returned to our room, we felt like we were 'out of the rat race'. The room was lovely with a great view from the balcony. Even though it wasn't school holiday season, the resort was full of kids. We had dinner at the buffet on our first night and didn't eat there again. The food was very ordinary and overpriced and the kids were noisy. Try the other restaurants. The food is better and they're not so noisy. We spent a lot of our time at the adults only pool. It's quiet and the staff there are great. I was very disappointed at the lack of nightly entertainment as at other Fijian resorts we've stayed at, the entertainment has been great i.e a different cultural experience each night. The Shangri La offers a 'disco' each night and once a week a cultural show that will cost you in excess of $100FJD. It seems to be all about money at this resort. I wouldn't recommend this resort if you have mobility problems. There's quite a bit of walking to do just getting from A to B, and plenty of trip hazards. I took a fall one night because of poor lighting and a very uneven pathway.
The beach area is quite small, not what I was expecting from an island. The rest is rocks and coral. You have to pay to hire a push bike.
My most memorable moment was being taught by Alfred ( down by the main pool )to make a grass skirt. What a beautiful person he is.
All in all, an ok holiday but I'd rather a smaller, more personal resort. I wouldn't return.

My husband organised a surprise trip to Fiji for us. He decided that we should spend 3 nights on the Coral Coast so the Shangri La was booked. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and provided whatever we needed happily. Our room was lovely and we overlooked the main pool [lagoon room booked]. The WORST thing about this resort is the majority of children who are left to run 'amok' while the parents [and grandparents too] are all sitting back drinking and having a 'good time'. Obviously, these people are on packages where the kids fly and eat free. The buffet dinner was the worst. Kids and ice-cream everywhere, and the noise level was terrible. We were happy to get back to our room that night. Thank God the Shangri-La has an adults only breakfast area. The next night we ate at the Beach Bar and Grill. We enjoyed a beautiful seafood platter, great service and the kids couldn't really run around because it was table service. The third time we ate out at a local restaurant which was highly overrated. The breakfast staff were sensational and the breakfast area for the adults only terrific. It's wonderful how quickly you get to know the staff and vise versa. When we checked out on the last morning, we had to wait a couple of hours for our transportation. We had heard about an infinity pool. One of the beautiful staff took us to it [it's a fair walk], where we enjoyed a relaxing swim. It was only when we were driven to the pool that we realised HOW BIG the resort is and all it's facitilies. When checking-in, you are handed a map of the resort which I don't think is as clear as it should be. It is a pity that newly arrived guests couldn't be 'shown around' or given a quick tour of the resort so that guests will fully understand where all the facilities are. The ATM was broken but the staff were very accommodating about helping us get to the next closest Westpac ATM. With a resort this large, I'm sure that areas could be better defined for adults and kids alike. I cannot find fault with our room [355] or the facitlities [thought it funny how the mask and fins are free for the first hour but the snorkel is 22fjd to hire]. I do question how you must pay to hire bikes too. In most resorts, these are included. We went with Ace to Sunday Church. It was a lovely experience and well-worth doing. But I did feel at one point that the main reason why we were there was to give money. It's just the unruly kids that spoilt our stay and even then I don't blame the kids but the parents on that score. BUT when the brekkie staff sang 'Isa Lei' at our last breakfast, all that melted away. Vinaka to the hard working staff especially the Brekkie Staff at Golden Cowie.

Room Tip: We were placed at the very end of the building of the Lagoon View. It's a walk from restaurant...

FANTASTIC!! Returned after 18mths & was instantly recognised & warmly greeted. MUN, Activities Director, quickly summed up our needs for this 'quick' stay & made it happen effortlessly!
Food is a bit expensive but if you're willing to venture out of the Resort there are some wonderful places to eat & 'Guest Relations' is only too willing to help!
Also, if you can ask your driver to stop at a local shop for bottled water on the to the Resort........this will save you quite a bit

Room Tip: Pillows too soft for my liking........but just ask & they will gladly supply others Food is a bi...

The most perfect place to get away from it all. Everything you need is there.
The staff are beyond perfect and very very helpful.
Cannot fault anything.
Ideal for both couples and families. They cater for both.

This hotel reminded me of an average all-inclusive hotel in need of refurbishment.Children running everywhere even in the bar and dance floor. Our room overlooked the "family" pool and when we sat in our balcony it was like sitting in the middle of a school playground! The "adult-only" pool was very small and children were allowed there too. And we were not there during the school holidays! Our room was OK but I am glad we only stayed there for one night otherwise it would have ruined our
entire holiday in Fiji. This hotel should NOT carry the Shangri-La name.
