This was our second visit to this resort but this time our grown up kids and their partners came with us, once again an incredible experience. We had seen a few bad reviews, particularly about the food so we were concerned things had changed from our first visit but our worries were unfounded. We spent most of the time indulging in the activities (golf, gym, tennis, snorkelling, kayaking, parasailing) and lazed by the adult pool (no noisy families). We experienced nothing but good food and wonderfully friendly staff and have great memories and will definitely return to this resort in the future.

Just got back from The Shangri-La Fijian. We had a wonderful relaxing time at the hotel. Staff went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great Christmas Day in Fiji. The Christmas buffet luncheon was fabulous with all the traditions that we are use to. The roasted meats, vegetables, hot pudding were just like home. We stayed in a Suite which was spacious. Turn down service and luxury toiletries were a nice touch. The room service wasn't' as expensive as I first thought. I ordered a kids spaghetti for$15.00 FJD and couldn't eat it all, it was hot and just like home made. The buffet breakfast and the room service food were the best in my opinion. I agree with earlier reviewers, if you want 5 star impeccable service (posh service) and over-the-top amenities, go somewhere else, but I fell in love with the slower pace and the tropical and beautiful surroundings of The Fijian. The Chi Spa would be up there with the BEST! I had to go back a second time, it was that good!

Room Tip: The Suite is great for couples

My wife and I stay here over Christmas and it was our first time to Fiji. The best part of the resort is that there are 'Adult Only' parts to the resort, it was great to be able to unwind without the noise of a baby crying or children running around non-stop. We did also stay in the main part of the hotel as this is where all the activities are held.

The employee's were all so lovely, you do get sick of the 'bula' but it's expected in Fiji. You can see that all the locals have a relaxed lifestyle, unfortunately this seemed to carry over onto a lot of the service. Comparing the Shangri-La with other countries everything including food orders can take it's time to get to you.

We had breakfast included with out package, unfortunately it was not what I expected from Fiji in regards to fresh fruit. No apples, organges, grapes, bananas. I saw rockmelon once which had no flavour to it and the watermelon looked like it was about to go off. Depending on what day we went we either go asked immediately what our egg order was (which was always delicious).

Compared to what friends have said about other resorts we had to pay for anything extra like the fire shows or putt putt golf. I'm not sure if this is just because it was Christmas time or if it's different resort policies.

Being Christmas there were some decorations and even a show from Santa where he gave out gifts. Each room had a nice little box of gingerbread men waiting after breakfast which was a nice little treat. When ordering at the restaurant or pool side you don't pay cash, it's just totaled at the end and you pay. One word of advise is keep your receipts as someone had charged something to our room and their billing system doesn't exactly itemise everything.

We didn't venture out of the resort as we had enough to do there. If you're looking for a holiday where you can just sit back and relax then this is the place to be. Would definitely recommend, if I was to go back I would stay in an Ocean Bure rather than the Lagoon rooms simply because this is the 'Adults Only' section.

Room Tip: Lagoon View rooms are better for families as you're close to the activities that kids can take p...

My husband and I returned from our week long honeymoon this afternoon. We'd heard mixed reviews but were very keen to make our own assumptions based on our own experiences. It was an enjoyable week with highlights and only a couple of lowlights.
HIGHLIGHTS
- a four course meal with champagne in the seaside cabana. We both agree this was our favourite experience of the week. We were treated to a private dinner as the sun set, complete with our own waiter and uninterrupted views of the ocean. An amazing night and we felt truly special. I had requested a vegan menu for myself and this was communicated to the chef prior to our dinner, the waiter checking to see if the chefs choices were suitable before we began our meal. This is a MUST DO!
- the fire dancing show and meal in Marau Village. Again, I requested a vegan meal and was treated to an absolutely amazing Indian dish with dhal, samosas, rice, pappadums and chutney. The organiser, Mun, was so friendly and attentive and made sure my needs were met. The kovo (earth oven) cooked buffet was gorgeous and thoroughly enjoyed by my husband. The entertainment (fire dancing and knife throwing) was great and the dancers really engaged with the audience. A very fun night, highly recommend.
-visit to the village. We went on a tour to the local village where we were warmly welcomed with dancing, singing and an invitation to drink kava (a traditional drink made from the root of the kava plant). The villagers were so friendly and the children were so gorgeous. As our host said, we were not viewed as tourists, but members of the village as soon as we took part in the kava ceremony. Unfortunately, we missed out on visiting a local school as it was holidays, but the children in the village were very happy to see us
-the staff. So genuinely warm and friendly. It was so nice to be around people who were so happy

LOWLIGHTS
-lunch times was a struggle in terms if variety. Many of the restaurants served buffet style meals (expensive) and there was limited choice considering my dietary requirements. My husband and I ended up having mixed grilled vegetables every day for a week. Healthy, yes, but didn't score points for variety. Even the vegetarian sandwich options had feta cheese through them.
-we found it hard to keep in regular contact with family back home unless we were by a pool. Wifi is restricted to the pool areas and a couple of bars. I had a relative in hospital and found it difficult to communicate with him. The wifi was also temperamental.
-as the resort is on an island, there is a feeling of being somewhat isolated. It is not difficult to 'leave' to experience the real fiji, but the resort has a rather large monopoly on many things such as restaurants and bars

Overall, it was a really nice experience. I'd go again, but perhaps when we.re a little older and retired (!) as it was a little too sedate for these young newlyweds.

My husband and I stayed here in March 2012, and have only now started using Tripadvisor to review hence the delay! This for us was our first stay in what we call a mega-resort akin to a cruise ship. We stayed in a lagoon view room (facing the main pool) and the room had everything you would expect in a motel room and was clean and comfortable. Our favourite bar at the resort was the little beach bar which had fantastic sunset views and was very friendly and just the perfect place for people to come together and recount their days. We unfortunately ended up a little ill for 2 days of our stay (due to eating some salad with room service burgers, knowing we should but forgetting this!) however onsite is a little shop which sells basic pharmacy items and also doctor can be called if needed.

We wandered into the village on the left facing the main road and bought supplies from the two supermarkets and some items from the op shop too (probably mainly items people have left behind at this resort!) Everyone was very friendly and when we wandered down towards the beach and got lost we were escorted down to the beach by a lovely man, volunteered by his wife!

The highlight for us was the relaxing nature of the resort, having the option of an adults only pool area if we wanted, and so many places to eat within the resort. We ate at all except for the buffet restaurant which just isn't our thing, but this always was full and people appeared to be enjoying it. As part of our package, breakfast was included daily, and this was top notch each time with gorgeous views over the lagoon area. And the room service (although we got sick), was timely (well fiji-time timely) and just as good as any of the restaurants we ate at.

With or without children, this is a great place to take some time out. Fiji time? why not; you're on holiday after all! We stayed here in December 2013 and had an incredible time. The Staff are so friendly and helpful. Yes food is expensive, and really nothing outside of the ordinary, but we got over it and still had a great time with what ShangriLa had to offer. Room was clean and serviced daily and we found it in verygood condition. We stayed in the Lagoon wing and although we had no children with us found the place quiet and pleasant. The Adult only pool was lovely, but hated the inconsidered smokers. Got to love Fiji time when you're on holidays... what's the hurry after all? Have fun and savour the experience of another culture :)

Room Tip: expect the world and you'll be disapointed. Expect the unexpected and you'll be amazed.

We stayed here in May for 7 nights. We had a family ocean view room which was great with our then 15month old. The room was a little dated for the price we were paying but clean. The staff were excellent and very friendly and loved the a kids!! Such friendly people. We had only good experiences with food but expect to pay similar prices to Australia. Plus it is Fiji time!! Which is hard when you have kids who are waiting to be fed. It is a very big resort with lots to do but it did mean a lot of walking to get where you wanted to go. I would recommend it as a great family holiday, lots to do and they cater well to families and children. We went with a group of friends, most with children so we had plenty to do. Personally I wouldn't go there as just a couple... way too many kids! But for what we wanted we enjoyed it. Fiji is a lovely place but if I had a choice I wouldn't travel back there purely due to the expense of it and think you can get better value for money else where.

Room Tip: We stayed on the ground floor family ocean rooms which were reasonably close to everything. Good ac...
