“relaxing time in Fiji”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

It was relaxing straight from the arrival, food was very good and staff made our stay very pleasant. The hotel is right on the cost and there is a small but clean sandy beach. Its not the newest hotel in Fiji but it has a cosy atmosphere.

We had a horrible experience at the Shangri-La Yanuca and we would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER stay there again. What a dump! The food was terrible, the service appalling and the staff were rude, arrogant and inattentive to the needs of patrons. This holiday cost us thousands and we have never been more disappointed.

We had multiple issues at the Beach Bar and Grill. The waitresses were constantly rude and inattentive. The least amount of time we had to wait for a meal was 45 minutes. On one occasion my partner ordered a meal and a steak sandwich came out instead. When I told the waitress it was the wrong thing (twice) she just walked away from me. My partner then had to walk up to the counter with the incorrect meal and tell the chef. The waitress in question then argued and told my partner that he did, indeed order a steak sandwich. She was unwilling to change the meal until the chef stepped in and told her she was wrong. We had a string of unpleasant events at this restaurant and the food was of a very poor quality. My friend ordered a seared tuna steak and it was overdone, dry and tasteless. We also ordered things that never arrived that were put on our bill. When we tried to correct this error we were again met with an argument. The waitress telling us that she could not take it off the bill, but we could takeaway what we had ordered. We had been sitting there for over an hour and a half and had asked for the particular item 3 times.

We had a similar issue at the Kalevu restaurant. We waited an hour and a half for food. It only arrived when we asked for it, and when it did arrive my chicken skewers were stone cold. No apology was offered. The waitress gave me a surly look and dumped the food back in front of me 20 minutes later.

On one particular morning at breakfast we asked for a mocha and the waitress tried to elicit a tip from us!!

When we checked out the credit card machine was not working and the lady at the counter told us we needed to go to the village with her to get money out of the bank!!!! How ridiculous!!! We had previously told her that we had a plane to catch and that we didn't have time. She was exceptionally rude to us. It was 6am at the time.

I can sadly say that we had only one nice dining experience at The Golden Cowrie Restaurant. The waiters and waitresses were outstanding in their service and the food was delicious.

Overall we found the staff at restaurants to be rude and surly. The food was not of a high enough standard and quality to charge the exuberant prices that were being asked. We recently stayed at Tokoriki island where the food and beverages were amazing and somehow Shangri-La charged the same prices as a 5 star island paradise. There was no comparison between the 2.

I would never recommend The Shangri- La on Yanuca island to anyone. I have stayed at multiple Shangri-La's around the world and have never experienced the rudeness, lack of service and lack of attention to detail ever before.

I intend to write a letter to Shangri-La Headquarters and tell them how disgusted I am with The Shangri-La Yanuca. I feel as though I have wasted an entire holiday and also plenty of money staying at this Resort.

Room Tip: Don't stay there!

stayed in a lagoon room. Had a very pleasant couple of days, and while there are many reasons to recommend the hotel, there are also numerous shortcomings that need to be addressed for the hotel to be of a piece with other esteemed members of the shangri-la stable.
Firstly the rooms (or at least the room type in which we stayed): bathroom was fine, having been upgraded relatively recently. In the bedroom, cheap and old furniture and a cathode ray television gave the room, in part, the air of a tired 1970s guesthouse. Instant coffee and powdered milk only reinforced this feeling and served to underline that the hotel's room features are definitively not five star. Disappointingly, the room design also failed to fully capitalise on the lovely views out to the well-tended gardens and lagoon. On the plus side, the bed was very comfortable.
The main lagoon pool was very pleasant, however the plastic sun loungers belong in the 1980s and the cut-your-feet-to-ribbons poolside surfaces have no doubt been the cause of any number of cuts and scrapes on young feet. (in fact, this was a problem throughout the resort, where a tropical 'shoes off' ambience was discouraged by the unfriendly, rather dark walkways connecting the resort).
Food - The poolside food and drink service that was pretty much nonexistent, and what little that was present was poor in quality and mediocre in execution (crisps, for which an attempted overcharging took place). Both dinner and breakfast buffets were good, particularly relatively to the usual Fijian offerings.
It was a short stay, so didn't have the opportunity to use all the numerous facilities on offer, although i was disappointed that the watersports rental hut closed at 4pm. Overall, the Fijian is more like a convivial family holiday camp in a great location, rather than a five-star hotel - no necessarily a bad thing, but don't expect a luxurious holiday

This is an ideal place to relax and unwind or if you wish, have some fun. Great location. Would not hesitate in staying here if we return to Fiji. The staff are wonderful. They go out of their way to make your stay memorable. All I can say to the staff is "vinaka vaka levu" thank you very much.

The resort has huge potential and the Shangri La hotel name is only as good as its worst hotel. This place was poor bordering on appalling. Such a shame given the potential and our experience with other resorts in the area.

Room Tip: Improve service, impress upon the staff that service needs to improve even allowing for fiji time, i...

Could not fault the service we received. The staff were very friendly and could not do enough for you! We were with a group of about 60 people but there was a smaller group of us that spent most of our time together and they would remember who was who and would point out where they were in the dining rooms are or the pool etc. the facilities were good and there was plenty of choice at breakfast

The Shangri-Las Fijian Resort was a wonderful place to stay.We loved the adult only pool area and adult only breakfast. The room was great and very clean and comfortable. I particularly loved walking to the little chapel and I cant remember the caretakers name but she was beautiful and told us all about the chapel. She took great pride in her job.
