Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Yanuca Island
Reviewed June 18, 2013 via mobile

The kids loved it. Great pools, nice beach, very relaxed and friendly resort with plenty to do. The staff were excellent, very welcoming and extremely helpful. My only criticism is that everything in the resort is overpriced, and it's too far to walk to the nearest town to buy supplies.

Disappointed with our stay at the Shangri-La. The place was OVERRIDDEN by kids. We're not children haters or the type that avoid resorts with children. However, despite being outside of school holidays in Australia I'd estimate at least 90% of accommodation was dominated by families. When you're enjoying the amazing scenery at the beach and all you can hear is kids crying eventually it takes away from the experience. There was no place to escape this on the beach.
There is an adults only pool and breakfast dining (which were empty) - both were appreciated and a big change from the rest of the resort. What is missing however is an adults only restaurant for dinner. Forget the romantic getaway because all restaurants were dominated by kids.. the Shangri-La is desperately missing an adults only place to dine. The 'all you can eat' restaurant felt more like Sizzler or Applebees than the Shangri-La. Disappointing and unlike any other Shangri-La experience I've ever had before.
Kids aside, the resort was dominated by bogan Aussies and it felt very down at heel. Not the kind of resort we'd payed in excess of $250 US per nigh for the experience. It felt more like the Outrigger or Mantra resort Gold Coast... but there's more:

CONS:
*Check-in advertised as 3pm. Despite arriving at 1pm we were not allocated a room until 4pm and wasted a day sitting in reception
*Internet did not work for 1 day in any area of the resort
*Nightclub was open for children to attend until 9pm each night
*Tennis was $5 for as long as you needed, yet mini golf cost $30
*Not recommended for couples looking for a romantic escape.. AVOID

PROS:
*amazing location on the beach if you can escape the crowds
*friendly staff who always make you feel welcome
*VERY kid friendly.. lots for kids to do

A week was a perfect time to spend at the Shangri La Fiji. We never left the hotel - there was no need to, everything was their at our fingertips. For families travelling with young kids, i recommend the all inclusive meals package. Just so easy and there is a good selection of food on offer. We stayed in the lagoon wing, a 30 second walk to the lagoon pool or water sports centre. The staff were great and our group of 4 adults and 5 kids under 9 y.o. all had an amazing time. As long as you don't go there expecting to find the usual Shangri La 5 star rooms, you won't be disappointed. The rooms are fine, but with so much to do, you'll only need them to sleep and wash up in. A brilliant week that was capped off by a beautiful farewell song from David and a group of Takali staff. Thanks to all for a perfect Fiji experience.

Room Tip: For young families, definitely opt for a lagoon wing room.

We went to the Shangri-La's Fijian Resort to shop for a wedding venue for our daughter because pictures on the Web and brochures always look great, but to see it for yourself you sometimes see what they don’t show and I wanted a resort that looks great and has what we want, because you want the day to be perfect. On my travels I viewed rooms venue, spa, chapel and food of the Sofitel, Sheraton, Westin,InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort, Sofitel and Spa.
The Shangri-La's Fijian Resort has a good venue their restaurant which had a Fijian theme about it, and with fairly lights in the trees ect would look very nice. We have 50 at our wedding and this space would fit everyone in. With a dance floor . With most packages you get some entertainment like the fire dancers. For this the guest would have to walk to the pool area and looking down to the beach to view this. This is one of three reasons we decided to have it here.
The food was good and the service was great we had no issues with that at all. The chapel I thought was the most pictures out of all the resorts I viewed. It was also the biggest easy fit 70 people. The chapel has AIR CON so that’s good, it had the blue sea behind with white sand so would make great Fiji an wedding photos. The only problem I had was you had to pick from two time slots 3.30 or 5.00pm. The area around the chapel would make for a stunning reception area as it had Hugh trees around the chapel with could be lit up with lights. The wedding coordinator was lovely and very helpful, very happy to answer any questions. If you reception isn't at the chapel you need to bus your guest to the reception venue and their bus only carries 25 at a time, so this put me off.The rooms where just fine, The lobby was a bit tried but they are planning on renovating the resort. If you do have your wedding there The wet weather option was the conference room I loved this area and would be my first choice. Its private and you show can be right there outside the door on the grass. Great size and has some good garden features in the room.
The kids club is free and the only resort I looked at that had free kids club. You can see this resort is very family friendly including the buffet they served. You can get own nanny for the day and she can let them play in the pool and walk around and a nanny is only $8 FDJ a hour so good value. This is a very family friendly resort. Lunch is $30 FDJ and Dinner is $70 FDJ and kids eat free. Sorry I didn't take pictures I only took video if you really need to view it happy to email

Room Tip: Foe that special place to stay ask about the rooms next to the spa - very special and I think they o...

I think my impression of this place is probably shaped by not being a big resort person. Our previous trip to fiji was to treasure island, and we loved the small intimate rustic feel. We also had rain and wind for most of our stay which detracted somewhat. Pros and cons.
Pros. Good food, well set up kids club and play area, nice beach by mainland standards, comfortable rooms close to the lagoon action, free water sports, lovely big pool, pool volleyball, golf course looked great but did not get opportunity to play, nice views from restaurants and pools.
Cons? Food expensive, too big for me, being in coral coast weather likely to be more temperamental than islands, a bit impersonal and some of the greetings seemed a bit not genuine eg "welcome home" seemed silly.
But still worth a try if you like this sort of thing, but the I think you can get all of the above in Queensland minus the fiji culture. For us, we will stick to the islands.
Also, try geckos across the road for good affordable meal, scallops were yummy, and free entertainment on sat night, kids loved it and went up to join in the Dance. Tomlus was also nice.

This is not our first visit to this resort. This trip we stayed at the out rigger then to Shangri-la. Well when we arrived its like a ghost resort compared to outrigger and our last visit here. we knew it would be quite because apparently they were going under renovation that never happened or was canceled but did not expect it to be this bad. The restaurants were only half open, the night club was closed where the kids had so much fun and us too on previous trips, the bars were not all open either. When asking a staff member we previously meet what's going on they told us they had new management running food outlets and they decided to close them, they also told us that day a regular guest to the resort just arrived and kicked up such a stink they were told to open everything. Well thank goodness that guest did because what a change the holiday was from that point, the people filled the night club the first night it reopened, our kids and us had fun after dinner and it was the same great times as last trip and we did not feel so bad. A big improvement was the food was better than last trip but a price rise had happened making it more expensive and unexpected and chief Glen even said Bula and asked us how we liked our food. A new pizza place was great value. Staff were number one, so friendly just like our last trip nothing's a bother and great with the kids, even more friendly than outrigger. Rooms still a little tiered but was ok, this is an older resort but that type of thing you over look because the staff are so great.the biggest difference I could see between the two resorts was (both full of Aussies ) the outrigger must have Aussie management because that's what food and activities were all pointing towards Aussie fun with local tradition as well, on the other hand where shangrila was not by any means anymore it seemed a little weird. Would I go back? yes in short because its so friendly but I would check first to see if every thing is open and what's for us as a family to do.

Room Tip: Ask where you are, lagoons closer to everything. If your in sea view it's miles from all the goo...
