We went to fiji for our wedding in late Oct 2007 we have a 4yr old girl and twin sons 18mths. We stayed in an Ocean View Family Room (due to 5 in room policy) near the Takali restaurant. I had prior to going read a lot of reviews on trip advisor to find out a general consensus of opinion from previous visitors. I can't believe that people have and can give this place a less than good review. We had an absolutely wonderful time doing as much or little as we wanted.
We did banana boat, jet ski, snorkelling, netball with Johnny and loads of swimming and relaxing (at bilo bar). The firewalking and lovo were very good.
Our 4yr old had a ball with the resort activities and kids club the couple of times she went, our twins were a bit more restricted due to their ages, but they enjoyed their swimming and playing in the sand and you can supervise them in the kids club.
We had 26 adults for our wedding along with their children and in all the time we were there I never heard one complaint about the resort or fiji time being a problem.
The only complaint we have was the one night we ventured to Gecko's (I have read other favourable reviews about) to try some food outside the resort, we had to wait 3 hours for our food and when it did arrive some meals were cold??? We did have about 20 diners this may have caused a problem for them. Some of our friends went to Tomlu's and enjoyed their meals and service.
Their really isn't any real reason to venture from the resort for food. We ate at all the restaurants and thought the food was good as well as the breakfast buffet. Coral Cafe serves a wicked lunch on the one day we actually had lunch, Takali had very nice asian and seafood you won't need an entree though. Bistro has been moved while they renovate the lagoon terrace were the bistro usually is. Childrens meals were adequate, I would recommend maybe taking some extra's in suitcase for little ones though as they can be finnicky.
Our wedding was handled wonderfully and have nothing but compliments for the service that was provided for this. The chapel (a postcard) and receptions (reef lawn & takali deck) were absolutely wonderful locations.
We will definately be going back for our 1st anniversary, the only thing we will change is to stay for longer.

This resort is absolutely fantastic for everyone, especially families with children. There is lots to do, the pools are great and the staff are fantastic. The resort has been renovated and is really lovely and clean. Even when the weather isn't great, you can still have a great time. We went there with our 2.5 year old daughter and she had a ball. We loved it and can't wait to go back.

It's really important that people understand that this is primarily a family resort. It is ideally suited to groups and extended families travelling together with children ranging from infants to teenagers.

We are a couple (39 and 43) who traveleled with our 9 mth old baby girl and 3 year old son. We stayed for 10 nights at the Shangr-la Fijian and one night at the Westin Resort and Spa on Denerau Island.

By far,
enjoyed our stay at the Fijian and can't wait to go back again next year at the same time and to stay in the same room.

First Impressions:

The resort is huge and very panoramic, tropical, well established gardens and coconut palms. The ocean side is not as scenic as the lagoon side (where all the action and activities are). The ocean side looks unattractive when the tide is out, however there are lots of creepy crawlies that our 3 year old loved looking at on the ocean side shallows, like sea ciucumbers, starfish, sea snakes etc. Not suitable for swimming.

Buildings are dated, but have a "fijian feel" to them with lots of timber and covered walkways and impeccably maintained gardens full of tropical flowers. It's not a ritzy, expensive resort look. Resort is undergoing renos and has a lot of refurbishment taking place which did not affect our holiday.

The lobby service desk is very efficient, note that they will take a $100 fj deposit for every night of your stay. In our case this was $1000fj. The hotel manager will encourage you to take an upgrade to the ocean side, even if you have booked lagoon side. The ocean rooms are way too far from the family pools and activities. Very long walk. They are trying to fill ocean side wings. Don't fall for this trick and insist on waiting for your lagoon room. We arrived at 8.30 am and were in our room at 9.30am with no extra charge.

After extensive reviewing on tripadvisor and other sources, I booked a Lagoon family ground floor room (Room 144). Absolutely the best spot to be. You could walk straight out from your back door (faces the lagoon) to the pool and lagoon beach area. A magnificent grassed area for the kids and adults to gather and play outside your door. Lots of fun activities taking place on the lawn, coconut throwing, bocce, cricket, soccer, coconut cracking so you can watch and be entertained. Great little outdoor area outside your room with timber table and chairs (in great condition). King size bed and two sofas they can make up into beds for kids. Great big bathrooms with lots of privacy from main room. They provide washing powder for the machines.

Lagoon Pool area and Lagoon Beach:

Totally awesome. Big pool and perfect baby pool (no shade). Limited shaded areas around the pool and beach, so best to grab towells the night before and reserve a spot early in the morning. We did this at about 7am every morning so we had shelter for our little ones. Full bar and food service available in these areas. BLT from the beach bar & grill was best value. There is also a pool hut selling beers, icecreams and really yummy homemade chicken sausage rolls and beef & vegie pies.

We enjoyed the free activities on offer such as kayaking and snorkelling. We paid for a glass bottom boat trip around the lagoon and my husband hired a jetski. Lots of people bringing in big fish (biggest was165kg Marlin) from the resort organised fishing trips. Pool sports are a regular thing too for adults and kids.

Bilo Bar:

Our favourite spot between 4-6pm happy hour. $9fj cocktails and discounted drinks. Beautiful spot for a sunset and to watch boats coming in from boat trips and water sports. Semi behind the bar was fantastic!

We were lucky to be there for Melbourne Cup Day and had so much fun at the bilo bar with the sweepstakes and hat competition!

Kids Club and Nanny service:

Highlight of the trip for us was having a safe environment for our 3 yr old to go to. Have included a picture of kids club activities. Our son had his 4th birthday and the staff (thank you Inoke) went out of their way to have the pastry cook make a spiderman cake and throw a fantastic party for him in kid's club. The club has scheduled activities. For the 2-5 yr olds they were glass bottom boat ride, crab hunting, trip to shell market on the island, sandcasle building etc. very entertaining for them. they also have dvd room and cookies and cordial if they get hungry and thirsty. Runs from 9 - 12pm and 1 - 5pm. Our boy only went in the afternoon as he spent morning with nus in the pool.

We also had the use of our own nanny for the whole stay. Every family is allocated a sitter ($24fj for first 3 hours and $7fj every hour after that). Our nanny was called Frances and the kids really took to her straight away. We hired her every day for between 4-8hrs usually in the 1 - 5pm in afternoon and 3 hrs on some nights. She was attentive, loving and made my husband and my holiday the most perfect so far. You can request her and I very highly recommend. At no time did we feel our baby wasn't being well looked after. We paid her more $10fj an hour because she was so wonderful. We also bought her and her family gifts (sulu, chocolates) when we left and we shed tears!

Not the best I have had on holidays overseas, but certainly edible. Don't go to fiji for the food. Lots of fruit Bananas, paw paw and watermelon. Best meal we had on resort was at the coral cafe for dinner. We ate at Takali restaurant (ok), buffet twice (ok) kids ate there more often as they are free. We also ate at Tomlous and Geckos (2) outside of the resort. Best meal, we felt was Geckos with the free show on a Sunday night.
Lots to choose from at breakfast.

We privately arranged a trip to Sigatoka with two other families for $60 (see front desk). Apart from this we couldn't be bothered doing any other tours as we just enjoyed relaxing doing nothing but reading by the pool and meeting great people.

Shops at the resort are pretty much the same as in Sigatoka.

What would we do different next year?

Only take canned spagetti for kids and more snacks for us. Apart from that nothing!

Loved the salt scrub from Isi at the Chi spa. Beautiful new development.

Had a massage across the causeway at Aunty's for one hour $50fj. Fantastic! Girls used to work at the Fijian.

The best holiday we have ever had with our kids. The Fijian is a professionally run operation with friendly, helpful staff and a warm fuzzy feeling to the place. The view from our room and poolside was like Paradise. Gorgeous clear blue lagoon except after rain and fish that swim around you in the shallows. Great thing to do with kids is to feed fish bread from the kayak or off the beach.

We cried when we left as the band played to our children twinkle twinkle little star, ba ba black sheep then the farwell song "Isa Lei".

We can't wait to go back again same time next year!

My girlfriend and i use trip advisor alot, which i find extremely useful. However we never take the the time to write a review on the hotels we stay at, which is very selfish, unitl now!

I must first start by saying that the lady who helped us check out of the Shangri La THE DAY AFTER WE ARRIVED was very understanding and helpful! However this in no way makes up for the extreme dissappointment of this overpriced, undermaintained, impersonal, poorly catered, Butlins experience. For the love of god do not go here unless you have given birth to multiple children and want to lose them for a few hours to relax, but even then i am not sure how you could possibly relax here when the kids are everywhere!

We were in genuine shock about how bad this place was for the money we were paying and the reputation the Shangi-La chain has/had. Joking aside we do not want anyone to experience this dissapointment! Even though we were only there one night it was still one night lost, which we could have spent in paradise!

After walking around the huge complex looking for something positive to say about the place i decided there was nothing postive to say so we tried to go on the wireless internet to find somewhere else to stay, the wireless doesnt work either! Just when we thought this hell hole couldnt get any worse we went to dinner! OH MY GOD! We can normally laugh off bad situations but we couldnt laugh off this one! I love chips beans and pizza but not when i'm at the bloody Shangri-La paying that amount of money, i was in shock and had to take myself to bed. I am not a morning person but i was up at 04:00 to get out of this place!

If you are in a couple this WILL NOT give you a good impression of Fiji, which is an amazing place! Our experience suggests that to enjoy Fiji whether as a backpacker or as someone with money to burn, then you should definately stay on one of the islands which we ended up donig! My suggestion would be Tokoriki island resort which was like paradise!

We stayed at the Shangri-La in August for 10 nights with our 7 year old and 4 year old. Its a GREAT resort for families with children. There is much to do, nobody gets bored and if your children are outgoing enough to enjoy the kids clubs, even better! However, we were shocked at the charges for the resort food, and the lack of value for it. I don't care what others say, its a poor standard of food for a 5* hotel. We expected to pay more considering the * rating, we paid the price, but did not get the quality. Our greatest disappointment was with the fact that the hotel management would do anything to have guests dine at the resort. Big signs of how bad the hygiene when outside the resort were totally uncalled for. The fact that several dining facilities outside of the resort offer free bus services to and from the Shangri-La AND were booked out constantly, was enough of a red flag to tell us something's not quite right at the shangri-La. I think that the Shangri-La wants it both ways: it advertises itself as a great family resort, and rightly so. But that does mean you also need to provide family-friendly prices. Parents do not expect to pay $20 for a plain, no frills hamburger at the Beachbar. If it had not been for our suitcase of "extra" nibbles etc, this would've been an Very Expensive holiday indeed. I've been in the hospitality industry all my life, and I don't mind paying for quality. It just was not there. If you look closely, you'll see a money-grabbing mentality at the resort, which is very distasteful. I sincerely hope the Shangri-La addresses the problem as it is a great resprt for families. By the way, Auntie Viri's Grey Hut across the road does all your beauty treatments for a fraction of the cost! And DONT order your taxi via the concierge, they charge $20 to the hotel for making the arrangements, walk to the end of the cause way instead, and negotiate your own fare at a quarter of the price!

My husband and I were married at the Shangri La on 8/30/07!! We then stayed for 8 more days and enjoyed every one of them.

The personal service was beyond superb and the food was just as good.
We didn't have any complaints with either. Thank you to Aggie, Ronnie, Tevita and Fax for making us feel so special.

The resort is beautiful and the activities are plentiful.

Vinaka Shangri La. We will see you again.

Absolutely not what you would expect of a Shangri-La chain hotel, for which you are paying more the 350 u$s a night. We were going to stay there through our holiday (5 days) but ended up checking out the day after we arrived (we wanted to check out the same day we arrived but didn't because we were exhausted from our long flight).
The Hotel is extremely old and not well maintained. The lobby is already somehow depressing with old speakers stuck to the ceiling. As we arrived early our room was not ready which is perfectly fine (we arrived at around 10am) so we asked where we could leave our things and get changed until we could move in, however they didn't have anything to offer, and proposed the lobby restroom... (I expected it to be big and clean, but it was small, there was nowhere to sit or put my things on, and was dirty and smelled badly). I didn't get changed (my wife did, but was already getting upset), and pushed to have my room ready. They did get a room for us almost half an hour later. To get to the room we walked through the facilities and we were getting more and more depressed as the place is really old (we came to know later that is was the first resort to open in Fiji). The rooms didn't even have a bath tub (only shower), minibar empty (the fridge was not even working), no bottled water available, no ball pen in the room (only a pencil, without a tip!). On the beach, the water is blue but you cannot go in because it is full of sharp rocks (except for a very narrow part in front of the main swimming pool).
We had lunch at the pool restaurant, where the food was not good at all, and in addition we had to call the waiter 4 times before they took our order, and we ended up paying 50 u$s for a beer a cocktail, a salad and some fried chicken wings and calamari starter platter.

We checked out the next day and moved to another hotel in Fiji. Unfortunately our holiday was already cut short and had a bitter taste for a few days.

In summary, it would have been OK if the price was 100/120 u$s/night. Don't let the pictures in the website mislead you (or the experience you might have had in other Shangri Las). We have been to other Shangri Las before and they had always been very good, but unfortunately this one was a huge dissapointment, as we said "let's play safe and go to Shangri La". Big mistake, and in summary we felt we were ripped off. We even spoke to the general manager to try to convey to him our dissapointment (and this is something we never did before, as we are very tolerant)
