“Mixed feelings a tthe Shangri La”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2007

We stayed at the Shangri-La in August for 10 nights with our 7 year old and 4 year old. Its a GREAT resort for families with children. There is much to do, nobody gets bored and if your children are outgoing enough to enjoy the kids clubs, even better! However, we were shocked at the charges for the resort food, and the lack of value for it. I don't care what others say, its a poor standard of food for a 5* hotel. We expected to pay more considering the * rating, we paid the price, but did not get the quality. Our greatest disappointment was with the fact that the hotel management would do anything to have guests dine at the resort. Big signs of how bad the hygiene when outside the resort were totally uncalled for. The fact that several dining facilities outside of the resort offer free bus services to and from the Shangri-La AND were booked out constantly, was enough of a red flag to tell us something's not quite right at the shangri-La. I think that the Shangri-La wants it both ways: it advertises itself as a great family resort, and rightly so. But that does mean you also need to provide family-friendly prices. Parents do not expect to pay $20 for a plain, no frills hamburger at the Beachbar. If it had not been for our suitcase of "extra" nibbles etc, this would've been an Very Expensive holiday indeed. I've been in the hospitality industry all my life, and I don't mind paying for quality. It just was not there. If you look closely, you'll see a money-grabbing mentality at the resort, which is very distasteful. I sincerely hope the Shangri-La addresses the problem as it is a great resprt for families. By the way, Auntie Viri's Grey Hut across the road does all your beauty treatments for a fraction of the cost! And DONT order your taxi via the concierge, they charge $20 to the hotel for making the arrangements, walk to the end of the cause way instead, and negotiate your own fare at a quarter of the price!

BULA!

My husband and I were married at the Shangri La on 8/30/07!! We then stayed for 8 more days and enjoyed every one of them.

The personal service was beyond superb and the food was just as good.
We didn't have any complaints with either. Thank you to Aggie, Ronnie, Tevita and Fax for making us feel so special.

The resort is beautiful and the activities are plentiful.

Vinaka Shangri La. We will see you again.

Absolutely not what you would expect of a Shangri-La chain hotel, for which you are paying more the 350 u$s a night. We were going to stay there through our holiday (5 days) but ended up checking out the day after we arrived (we wanted to check out the same day we arrived but didn't because we were exhausted from our long flight).
The Hotel is extremely old and not well maintained. The lobby is already somehow depressing with old speakers stuck to the ceiling. As we arrived early our room was not ready which is perfectly fine (we arrived at around 10am) so we asked where we could leave our things and get changed until we could move in, however they didn't have anything to offer, and proposed the lobby restroom... (I expected it to be big and clean, but it was small, there was nowhere to sit or put my things on, and was dirty and smelled badly). I didn't get changed (my wife did, but was already getting upset), and pushed to have my room ready. They did get a room for us almost half an hour later. To get to the room we walked through the facilities and we were getting more and more depressed as the place is really old (we came to know later that is was the first resort to open in Fiji). The rooms didn't even have a bath tub (only shower), minibar empty (the fridge was not even working), no bottled water available, no ball pen in the room (only a pencil, without a tip!). On the beach, the water is blue but you cannot go in because it is full of sharp rocks (except for a very narrow part in front of the main swimming pool).
We had lunch at the pool restaurant, where the food was not good at all, and in addition we had to call the waiter 4 times before they took our order, and we ended up paying 50 u$s for a beer a cocktail, a salad and some fried chicken wings and calamari starter platter.

We checked out the next day and moved to another hotel in Fiji. Unfortunately our holiday was already cut short and had a bitter taste for a few days.

In summary, it would have been OK if the price was 100/120 u$s/night. Don't let the pictures in the website mislead you (or the experience you might have had in other Shangri Las). We have been to other Shangri Las before and they had always been very good, but unfortunately this one was a huge dissapointment, as we said "let's play safe and go to Shangri La". Big mistake, and in summary we felt we were ripped off. We even spoke to the general manager to try to convey to him our dissapointment (and this is something we never did before, as we are very tolerant)

  • Liked — Leaving the place. Frankly, it was a huge dissapointment for us.
  • Disliked — Old and not well maintained. No attention to detail.

We have just returned from 8 nights at this fantastic resort. We are a family with an 18yr old, 16yr old and 12yr old. We travelled with another family with a 20yr old, 18yr old and 10yr old. We stayed in Lagoon View Rooms (2 per family). Us parents had a room each and we mixed the kids up with the two 18yr old & 20yr old in one room and the 16/12&10yr olds in another. The rooms were side by side so this was no problem. The weather was perfect, each day more beautiful than the one before. We had a breakfast & dinner package so ate at the buffet dinner 6 nights and the Beach Bar and Grill 2 nights. We would have breakfast around 10am so didn't need lunch. The 10yr old got free lunch but the others were fine without it. We would have a snack (chips/biscuits) about 4pm which we purchased from the little general store at the resort. The buffet dinner suited us perfectly as the variety was fine and there was something for everyone's tastes. Alot has been said about the staff before, and I can say that absolutely they were friendly, obliging and efficient. The Fijians are truly beautiful people. Our older kids and ourselves went to the Black Marlin bar each night around 10pm. for the band and dj and it was heaps of fun. It is open til about 1a.m. Fax the DJ and Kaliova (security?) were fantastic! The older kids quickly made friends with a few others in their age group. (but there are not alot of 18-20yr olds staying there). Our kids small group spent lots of time together and if we were worried they thought it would be boring, we were so wrong. They all want to go back and rated the holiday as 'awesome'. There are lots of tours to do away from the resort but we choose not to leave because we were more than happy with what the resort had to offer. You can do as much or as little as you like. We did banana boat, jet ski, snorkelling, kayaking, golf, gym, lots of the organised activities such as soccer/touch/volleyball/cricket and our days were full. Cocktails in the Bi Lo Bar on sunset - perfect! We thought the value for money was pretty good. We could buy beer (bout $50 Aus a carton), we had duty free spirits & just bought juice & soft drink and kept in fridge in our room. Ice machine dispenses free ice. Each night we made our own drinks and sat on the beach after dinner. We were sad to be leaving but will definitely go back.
Overall I would say this is probably the best resort we have ever stayed in and the best family holiday we have been on. If you have any specific questions, email me, I am more than happy to reply.

My husband, our 3 year old daughter and myself have just returned from this fantastic resort. The website does not do it justice. The resort is huge, with so much to do.We upgraded to a suite for extra room and it was just divine. The kids disco at night in the Black Marlin Bar was great. We found the food great, the staff fantastic, the whole place perfect! We were all sad to leave!
Its excellent for families with kids.

We have recently returned from a family holiday at the Shangr-La, we were a party of six adults and 5 children the eldest was 2, twins also 2, and 5 month old twins.
Resort staff went beyond what we expected to help us, portacots were in the rooms, and a baby bath and strollers were provided.
Room staff fitted cleaning around babies sleep times, and all the resort staff were lovely with the children. We had a babysitter most mornings for the babies, she was delightful and my daughter felt confident leaving her babies with her. The older 3 did not go to Kids Club as they spent all their time playing by the pool or at the beach, althought we did take them to the playground, and walks to the shell market, and they also enjoyed the kayaks.
The buffet breakfast was always nice with an abundance of fresh fruit, the children enjoyed the lunch boxes and both the buffet dinner and Beach Bar and Grill restaurant worked well for our family meals.
We had 3 ground floor lagoon view rooms and once the children were in bed we could sit outside and enjoy the warm evenings.
Thank you Shangri-La for a fantastic holiday - we will be back.

My wife and I went to a friends wedding at the Shangri La. I had read the reviews about the resort before I went over but I was still pleasantly surprised.

It is a beautiful resort with a huge area. Our group had about 60 people in it but the resort is so big you can disappear in it.

I took the advice to try the restaurants outside the resort. I can't say I would recomend them. Tomlous is about 5 minutes by taxi(cost $4 a head) but you have to wait too long for your meal and there was no airconditioning. The meals were cheap($9-$16) but I didn't think they were that great. I thought it was worth while eating in one of the resort restaurants. I recommend booking for the early evening as we were turned away from a couple because they were full at about 7pm. Later in the evening we were the only ones eating at about 9-10pm. Meals were great if you chose well and cost around $22-27.

It is great being able to book everything to your room. It means you don't have to carry a wallet around with you. Just remember to keep a track of your account. You can do this on your tv in your room. There is an automatic $5 donation to the local community building fund. We did find that the occupant of our room before us had made a purchase prior to their leaving. This was accidently placed on our bill. We queried it at the front desk and it was removed without problem. Suprisingly our bill after 5 days was $450 Fijian. We had a $100 bar tab and with the exchange rate it only cost us $300NZ for meals and a few drinks. We did have the complimentary breaffasts which I recommend.

I must say the staff at the resort are great. Very friendly and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. I didn't have any trouble with "Fijian" time. Everything was quick and well done. The Fijians are beautiful people and very accomodating.

I made couple of visits to Sigatoka and besides the T Shirts I wouldn't bother with the trip although you get to see the country and some of the locals. A poor but friendly country. We shopped around for Kava bowls (20 inch) and other local crafts. We found the cheapest was in the Jacks Shop at the resort. paid $30 less for our treasures than we were offered in town. We did buy weaved hats from the poolside but you can't bring them back into the country green. They need to be dried, so leave them in Fiji.

A beautiful relaxing break that I recommend.
