We stayed 5 nights, 2 adults and 3 children. The hotel was excellent and lived up to our expectations. The rooms were modern, clean and had all necessary amenities. We all enjoyed the pool area, but the paved area gets very hot in summer, so bare feet is not an option when walking around. The restaurants were great especially the buffet breakfast, food selection was by far better than most other places we ate on the island. We have Advantage Plus card so with discount meals are not too expensive. Also ate at poolside restaurant good as well.tShops on site are great for bits and pieces and even duty free shopping. Staff were very helpful and once you get used to being on Fiji time things go well.

With school holidays pending and the cold winter months ahead - the idea of a family holiday in Fiji prompted us to call the travel agent. We have been up to Fiji a few times - have stayed at Mana Island, Malolo and Castaway with the latter being our favourite. Castaway is perfect for children, has a lovely kids club and the beach is picture postcard. It's also popular! With only making the request a month out - we found it was fully booked so we decided to try somewhere different. The Sofitel on Denarau Island was available, had varying reviews but we were willing to give it a go.
A holiday in Fiji shouldn't be without sun and we were lucky to have it present the entire holiday so there wasn't a lot of movement away from the pool - even though we had imagined venturing out for a curry or a tour - it never happened. We got lazy. The pool is the main feature of the Sofitel - fantastic for kids with a waterslide. It needs to have some impact as the beach is nothing like you'll receive out on the islands and you need to know this or you'll be bitterly disappointed on arrival.
The food was the best we have had in Fiji. We especially enjoyed the tuna ... and the ham off the bone on a slice of French bread for breakfast - perfect. There is a choice of three resturants, V, Salt and Lagoon. It's not cheap to eat or drink at any of them but then you have to give that all away when you're on holiday.
There is also a Spa which I booked into to have my teeth whitened. Why I ever considered having cosmetic dentistry in Denarau is a myth but I pursued and paid for my efforts in cash and discoloured teeth. They are of a yellow hue and I have booked into my dentist in New Zealand to rectify the procedure. Brilliant!
The Sofitel is only 20 minutes away from the airport which is a plus if you are arriving late at night or leaving early in the morning. The service was good, the Fijians are lovely people and are fabulous with children.
The room did have a musty smell as read in an earlier review, was smaller than I imagined and noisy at night/morning with people coming and going but that's to be expected in such a large complex.
Overall I give it the thumbs up - just stay away from the peroxide!
Happy travelling.

We stayed at the Sofitel after a week at Castaway Island and found it to be disappointing for a "5 star" hotel.

The kids club was very disappointing. The staff were friendly but the TV was on constantly. There weren't many kids using the club and we felt they could have done so much outside with the kids. We ended up only using the kids club a few times. Thank goodness for the slide at the pool.

Denarau itself is very disappointing. The beach is very average and we didn't have any inclination to go swimming there.

There were some great staff. However, there were a few there who didn't want to be there, walking around chewing gum and no smiles. For a 5 star property this is unfortunate.

We stayed in a family room which wasn't the cleanest we've seen. Again, we're talking about 5 star!!

Our other disappointment was the food for the kids in the turtle club corner. There was little choice, especially healthy. We also felt the kids menu at Salt was expensive. We had lunch at the Hilton one day and their service was fantastic and the kids menu was very good value. In fact they gave a discount for our daughter being under 5.

Breakfast buffet was fantastic. The array of food was amazing. And we had some great curries at Salt.

Unfortunately we were disappointed in the Sofitel and doubt we'll go back.

We have just returned from eight idyllic days in Fiji. We fell in love with Fiji, the smiles, the music, fiji time!!

The hotel provided everything we needed to disappear from the everyday world - fantastic breakfasts with something different to try every day, lazing by the pool or on the beach, going for a walk along the beach, taking a Hobiecat out for an afternoon sail, and then where too for dinner - Salt was our favourite, although V for a special occassion was wonderful. The spa experience was also incredible - best facial I have had - try it just once!!

This is a clean, modern well run facility.
We arrived on an early flight and they worked hard to get us into our room two hours early. We had a lovely view of the ocean.
They had all kinds of impromptu music and dancing happening in various locations all through the day.
The people of Fiji are very welcoming, warm people and their staff certainly reflects this.
There were a lot of families with children of all ages, but it is a large property and they were never obvious or noisy.
