“Beautiful Place, Had a great time.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2010

I had read a few reviews before I went and was a little concerned about some of the complaints people had, but I have to say after a 7 night stay, it was a great place to stay and as a couple we were very pleased.

As it was off season it was clear that the place was not full, which was very pleasent as it meant that space around the pool was easy to find and noise from other guests was at a minimum. At arrival we were greated by some staff singing and playing guitar. We found our room was upgraded from a garden veiw room to a sea veiw room at no extra cost. The room was always well clean and the staff were very plesant, meeting all our needs.
The breakfast buffet was included in our package and was a great way to start the day (we ate alot of pastries during our stay). Eating a large breakfast meant we didn't need a lunch and instead we indulged in snacks by the pool with a cocktail.

We did feel the prices at the hotel for food were expensive, but quality was high. We choose to eat at the Port for dinner most nights, and enjoyed the live entertainment that most places at the Port provided. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

As the beach is reclaimed land, it was grey and the sea water not too appealing for swimming, so I would recommend taking a boat trip to one of the islands for the day to experience the white beaches and snorkling. We took the captain cook day cruise to mystery island and had a ball.

We stayed @ Sofitel for a week (got married @ Sonaisali Island Resort) and it was lovely.

LOVED the Pure Fiji products/toiletries that were left in the bathroom, and LOVED the daily bottled water.

House keeping were wonderful, nothing like going out for the day and coming back to a nicely made bed.

The buffet brekie was very nice, massive variety to choose from. Room service was ridiculous, the prices were just absurd.

The place didnt seem very cultural, no theme nights or island nights etc

The Resort overall was beautiful but the staff were no where as near friendly as the other resorts, and based on that alone I would prefer to stay elsewhere. Staff @ Sonisali were so beautiful and friendly, I looked forward to seeing them throughout the day, they really made our stay but we didn’t seem to get that @ Sofitel. The staff didn’t smile as much here, that was sad to see, I don’t know if its because management tell them to not be to friendly or because the place is to stuck up and the workers are not used to hotel patrons being nice to them?

Overall the place was very nice and clean.

We stayed here for a week before Christmas. Very disappointed with dining options. Themed buffet night was limited in choice and food more resembled cafeteria fair. Prices of snacks/drinks around the pool were high - don't know how a family would have coped. All resorts on the island seem to exploit their "captive market" in the dining area. Taking the courtesy train shuttle to the marina is a good option for dining. Having said that, the facilities at the Sofitel were lovely and the staff wonderful. The gym manager even opened the gym early for me (5am) to use before our flight home.

Where should I start? The front desk clerk was rude from the time we got here...the beds were lumpy and uncomfortable...the drinks at the pool watered down... food was overpriced and average...property was rundown overall and overpriced. Not a good experience. Don't go here.

We just stayed at the sofitel 1 night before leaving. The room was more like city hotel and compact rather than resort villa. However, the pool was great and I love breakfast with champagne! Yummy!! Also you can walk to the Marina, which was nice.

On Denarau Island (if you could call it an island) there are quite a few resorts to choose from - Radisson; Sheraton; Westin and Sofitel. We chose Denarau as it's only 20 mins from the airport; close to Nadi if you want to check out the shopping/markets/temples there (FJ$12 one way cab fare); and also close to the Port Denarau shopping centre and restaurants (also the departure point for most cruises).
The Sofitel has a large pool (you can do laps quite easily from one end to the other), separated kids pool and a pool slide; the beach area is perhaps the best on the island but it's not golden sand like the outer islands.
You can easily walk to the other resorts as they are all in a row. From observation, the Westin didn't have a beach, lots of small pools and the staff weren't as friendly as at the Sofitel (we stopped by for a drink). The Sheraton has a small beach; small individual pools and no real area to try and do a lap or two.
The only comparison for our needs (small child) was the Radisson - it had a few pools; smaller separated sections for kids and a beach atmosphere where the sand was next to the pools. One thing I liked about the Radisson was that sections of the pool were shaded - unlike the Sofitel and a problem if you want to escape the burning sun in the pool. The pool at the Radisson however seemed a long way from the accommodation but the Radisson had more restaurants to choose from.
My only issue with the Sofitel is the bathroom - the lighting wasn't good; there was mould in the corners that a squirt of bleach would fix; and the shower leaked all over the floor. Other than that, the room was large enough for a family of 3-4; the beds were comfy and the bath products were good quality.
The guest laundry was free at the Sofitel and was at the end of the corridor. The staff were helpful and friendly; the kids club was open until 9pm - we didn't use it but the activities looked fun. We participated in the pool aerobics and our son had a go at dressing up and helping to light the torches at night.
The internet at the hotel was charged by the minute or max of FJ$37 a day which is good value based on other hotels I have stayed at elsewhere.
We didn't eat at the hotel, other than the breakfast which was included in the package and enjoyable. We chose to buy a Bula Bus ticket and go to the Port Denarau each night. The ticket was FJ$6 per adult (kids under 12 are free); opens from 7.30am - 11.30pm at night and the route takes you around the island to the other resorts.
There were only a few restaurants at the Sofitel and they are renovating an area at the front of the hotel for a coffee shop. I generally find hotel restaurants expensive so it didn't worry us on the choices or lack thereof.
If I came back, perhaps I'd look to stay at the Radisson for something different. But we have enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel. Definitely Denarau is the place to stay. Four years ago we stayed on the Coral Coast at the Fijian Shangri-La (an hour away from the airport) and the choice has thankfully changed since then!

OK, it has the facilities you expect in this price range. We had a one-night stopover to catch early flights after staying at Funky Fish in Malolo, one quarter of the price and 10 times the quality of service. The plan was to hit the spa for pedicures and other post-island repairs. This was hastily abandoned when we saw the spa menu and price list - pedicure involves all sorts of treatments, but no straightforward nail cutting and polish and costs over FJ$100. (Note for future visitors: at Port Denarau shopping centre, there is an excellent beauty salon charging normal Fiji city prices e.g. pedicure from FJ$25 to FJ$60; it closes at 6pm daily, so get there fast!).
Swimming pool is really very good and generous distribution of lovely soft beach towels (better than room towels); adjacent jacuzzi functions well but cannot press "on" switch without getting out and would be too small if hotel was full - need at least two.
Two instances of excellent service rescue this from total blasting: firstly, we had ordered lunch by the pool and, since it was a long time coming, I had wandered off to look for the jacuzzi; I was about as far as it is possible to be from any form of cover when the skies opened and the rain fell. By the time I reached the main building, I was totally drenched and sat down at a cafe table with my also rather soggy companion. Through the mist on my glasses, an angel with the dress and demeanour of A Big Boss appeared, bearing hot beach towels to dry us off. The second instance also started off as poor service: our room rate included a free breakfast, i.e. the buffet breakfast served from 7am - but we had to leave at 7.15 am. After three tries with different reception/concierge staff, two of whom just said "breakfast starts at 7, get there quickly", we were finally told to book a "box breakfast" from room service and warned that if we ordered anything else from the room service menu, we would be charged. This did not sound promising, as, while a bit of breakfast would be nice, what we both REALLY need at 6.30 am is strong coffee. Room service, when telephoned, proved to be utterly amenable to our needs and after extensive consultations, we were served strong coffee, croissants, and poached eggs on toast (with side dishes of sausage, tomato and hash browns) which arrived a couple of minutes before the ordered time.
One other good thing: while the mattress was a little soft for my taste and was showing a tendency to dip, the quilt, sheets and pillows were perfect!
One major whinge: returning from dinner at the excellent Lulu's restaurant at the Marina, we fancied a nightcap. Only one of the hotel's bars was still open at 10.50pm. on a Friday night. There was a band playing there at about three times the acceptable noise level - and they weren't actually very good, which just added insult to injury! Luckily, our rooms were in the same block (but out of earshot), so after our drinks had been served at the table, we sloped off to our room.
