Sheraton Denarau Villas

Reviewed August 17, 2009

Have just returned this week from six nights at Sheraton Villas with our family, including two grandchildren 2 half and 16 months. Weather was nice, not too hot and sticky and a couple of nights it rained during the night. We were upgraded from a garden room to a poolside room, but did not take it bacause of the very steep steps leading up to the 2nd bedroom. We then waited for half a day for a room to be available, but were able to use the poolside room and spend time at the pool which suited us, but this did make it late getting settled.
Overall the Restaurants were expensive, but we thought Zing at the Westin was very good and good value, Salt at the Soffital was very nice and not too overpriced. We ate at the Marina, at the Steak House very average and Amalfi was nice, but food average and quite expensive. Best value was the night we ate in and had a Pizza delivered from Mama's, cost $32 delivered and was huge, fed four adults and some left over for lunch the next day. Drinks were expensive, how they can charge $26 for a cocktail beats me Found having a glass of champagne was more bearable at $12. Fiji Bitter $8. Definitely take in your duty free drink along with some nibbles and enjoy on your balcony.
The pools outside the Sheraton are great for littlies, sand to play on and gradual slope into pool. Slide at Raddison was wonderful as were the pools.
We made use of the Bula bus between resorts and the other bus to the marina, which you now have to pay for, but you get an all day pass for $6.
All in all a great place for family to holiday, we did not use babysitters, but feel on speaking with others that tourists will stop going if the prices continue to inflate.

I did feel our holiday was spoilt when they said we didnt have a booking, and the villas were full to capacity. They blamed our travel agent. They obviously gave our pool side room to people arriving eariler - see previous email. We were then put in the worst room - right by the road and over looking a pond with a slope so we couldnt let our baby out. I don't think they know what they are doing in regards to hotel management. and they don't care, you do bang your head on a brick wall. It is very disorganised - it really is a "hope for the best resort "- we heard other people's stories of booking rooms with kitchen and they were full up (because they upgraded other people obviously!) so they put them in one room with their families. I am not sure we would stay there again - it's just too annoying. FIji is lovely though!

We stayed at sheraton denaru villas in july, two bedroom villa was large with plenty of room for five. Room service was good and always left clean, did have mouldy pillow and blankets with lots of holes but on the whole we were comfortable.
Quite lacking around pool area, not enough umbrellas and pool lounges never cleaned, also there were not enough towels and we went without on a couple of occasions.
Mainly ate at feast, buffet was good although they were unable to keep the food hot so needed to eat when buffet opened.Quite expensive! Had pizzas at Radisson next door and they were good value.
Looking forward to returning to fiji, might try new intercontinental.

We visited the Sheraton Denarau Villas on a package deal. Group consisted of three generations of the family and we found many similar groups at the hotels (Sheraton Villas and Sheraton Hotel effectively share the same facilities).
We arrived and were processed by reception quickly and with no problems. we found that we were all "upgraded". We had booked three garden view rooms and received pool view rooms. This was a definite advantage especially our room which was ion tyhe ground floor and allowed us easy access to the pools at the Villas. We all agreed that the location was a significant reason for the holiday being such a success. If we returned to the Sheraton Villas we would make sure that we had a poolside room.
The only downside to staying at either of the Sheraton Hotels is the cost of the food. Dining at any of the restaurants is expensive and the service is patchy. We dined at the Flying Fish one night and paid about $100 per head for an ok meal but non existent service. Still not bad enough to get hung up about. Wine especially is very expensive.
Alternatives are to go to the Marina where there are a variety of good restaurants at reasonable prices and reasonable service. You can walk in 20 minutes or catch the Bula Bus which costs $FJ6 for the day. There is a free shoppers bus which runs to the marina regularly but is not allowed to enter the Sheraton grounds. You can catch it out the front or walk up to the Radisson or stop it when you are walking to the Marina.
Did the Finding Nemo cruise one day which was fine if you are looking for a brief excursion to the reef but don't want a full day out especially if you have young children Overall a very enjoyable week and recommended.

Overall this was a perfect family holiday with only one minor issue that was professionally handled by the hotel management. We have 3 kids (7, 5 & 1 y/o) that is why we chose the villas with 2 bedrooms. The weather was perfect this time of year and it only rained for about 2 hours one morning. Otherwise it was a warm 26-30 every day.
We arrived at 6:30 am so were not sure if we would get a room or have to wait, but we were warmly greeted with a cold tropical juice and checked in promptly. This might have been as we went outside of school holidays and it was not very busy.
We had a ground floor lagoon villa overlooking the pool. This was perfect as we could put the older 2 in kids club and sit by the pool (with baby monitor) just outside our room while the youngest slept.
To our problem - My wife and I chose the all inclusive meal package - in hindsight this was a mistake. We were put under extreme pressure by our travel agent to make the decision and were given misleading information by them. However, to the Sheraton's credit, they did everything to fix the problem, gave us some good alternatives and were very helpful.
The older 2 kids regularly went to the kids club - they loved it and had a ball. The staff were fantastic and took great care of all the children. There were plenty of interesting activities including many cultural ones like basket weaving, coconut opening etc. My kids made lots of friends (and we did with many of the parents) and played with them at the different pools. We sometimes used a baby sitter from the handicraft stall to look after the baby during the day and all the kids at night so my wife and I could go out for dinner. This was not expensive at FJ$20 for 3 hours. We both strongly recommend this ;)
The Villas are now 10 years old and look it, but were still very nice, are well maintained and very clean (rooms serviced daily). We didn't spend a lot of time in the rooms other than sleeping because we had a meal deal so didn't utilise the kitchen facilities - but we will next time. There were 3 flat screen TV's to choose from with a good variety of international channels. The beds are very comfortable, the rooms spacious, the air-conditioning and fans work well.
The Sheraton itself has undergone a major renovation - I read $130m. All the restaurants are new, the lobby is beautiful and the pools are great. We moved from pool to pool depending on where the kids wanted to swim, but they preferred the main pool in front of the Sheraton lobby. We went next door to the Radisson a few times as they have a great water slide (not sure who had more fun). We didn't use the beach much as the sand looks dirty (it isn't and the water is warm) and the pools are so good.
Our pick of the restaurants was Flying Fish - the snapper curry was amazing - the food was incredible as was the service. The Steak House Bar and Grill at the Westin was a major disappointment. The food was well below standard and many things on the menu were not available. We went back again to give it a second chance and it was worse than the first time. I heard it was about to be closed for a renovation, so hopefully this will be improved. We also had an amazing Japanese meal at Hamacho, which we highly recommend! We ate a couple of meals at the Wet Edge which were very good and the buffet at Feast was a good standard.
We had a couples massage at the Westin Spa which was very good. The setting was very tranquil in the open traditional bures. Pricing is similar to most hotels.
When the baby is a little older we will add an island onto the trip as well as the Sheraton.
I'll try to add some photo's later.

We (Husband and 22 month old daughter and I) just came back from Staying at the Sheraton Villas, and we had a great time!!!
I have been reading the reviews before i left and was a little worried that im going to be in a faulty towers hotel, but infact it was the opposite!!!
Check in was quick and we even received welcoming refeshments in the lobby!
Since we arrived late, we ordered room service and that was surprisingly quick too (only waited 20minutes!).
We booked for the lagoon room on the ground floor and we recommend that room type to others, due to it's easy access to the pools and also if it gets windy you don't feel the wind because the Villas are surrounding it.
The rooms were spacious and cleaned everyday. The Kitchen was handy for quick snacks such as instant noodles and to heat food for the little one. I also Purchased Vegetables and a small piece of chicken breast from the grocery shop at the Marina to make a small pot of chicken and vege soup to keep for me daughter. Because the kids menu isn't all that healthy ie. my daughter would only eat the hot chips and nothing else!
I took the recommendation for the previous reviewer and purchased myself a Starwood Privilege card !! http://privilege.starwoodhotels.com/contactus.aspx
If 2 ppl are dinning you get 50% off the total bill, and that helps alot because eating out every day is costly. The card does cost around $300aus, but you get that back for using it, and you can always use it again when are are back home.
Resturants i recommend is The Flying Fish!!! we love it there cos the standard of food is like back home in australia, very fresh! Do try the Crab!!! you get 2 Crabs and it's huge and full of meat! does get a little messy but well worth it! Better to order the crab to share and get 2 side dishes, we ordered the crab and lobster(you'll get 3 small lobsters) and 2 sides and it was too much to eat!
We didnt like the Steak house - bar and grill at the Westin, cos the food we had was very over salted - even for the Kids meal.
We went to the resturant at the marina, called indigo - it was indian and the food was really nice. You also have to remember that Indian Fijian's comprise of around 40% of it's total population, they are now going into their 3rd and 4th generation indian fijian, so indian food here it definitely genuine.
We did a 3/4 Day trip to an island call Malolol, and recommend a full day for others! cos half or 3/4 day is very rushed. The snookling was the only thing that we were able to fit in and so missed out on the kyaking.
The westin spa was really nice, and prices were similar some what cheaper then what you will pay at home. They have discounts if you book later into the day/evening, which is a good time cos you can still maximise your time in the sun.
Overall we had a wonderful time and didnt want to come back. This place is great for a family holiday and the staff are very friendly and helpful, the Australian dollar is pretty strong so you wouldnt have to worry about cost for food too much, so you can all enjoy it and chill out!!!!

Just back from a week at a Sheraton Villas - very quiet, despite being NZ school holidays, with occupancy probably under 30% - fantastic! I hate crowded resorts!
Had a wonderful time - the pools are fantastic, especially the newest ones, which really cater for younger kids - our two boys, 3 and 6, had a great time, especially since one of the pools was shallow enough for them. Villas themselves fine, although as others have remarked, need for a spruce-up soon. Were well serviced daily (you pay extra for this).
Visited a number of restaurents, both at resorts, and at port. Best (by some distance for service and value) was the restaurent at the Trendwest / worldmark (timeshare) resort. Short stroll along the beach to get there.
Overall, still very safe to visit Fiji (although who knows what the next 12 months will bring). Quiet resorts and de-valued Fiji dollar mean there will be some great deals around!
