Estancia Aguila Blanca
Reviewed February 25, 2014

The estancia is in the middle of nowhere, on a hill overlooking a lake and the hilly grasslands. It is quiet, serene and relaxing just to soak in the views. The road is a dirt road but even after 18 hours of (pouring) rain, it was still possible to drive back to the main road. And it was easy to find if you follow the directions given on the website.

We were the only guest during our two nights stay so maybe it was even more quiet then usual and we had the whole place for ourselves. We enjoyed the home cooked meals. It is honest food and well prepared. Our room was next to the lounge and very roomy. The estancia is an older building and that shows in the (bath)rooms. But you can't expect a modern, sleek outfit in an historic home.

Thanks to the persuasion of the resident gaucho Santiago, we got on a horse for the first time of our lives and it was a great experience to ride to the hidden waterfalls. Even for us beginners it was doable! So the next day we went out again and played a bit being gauchos, herding the cows. Uhhh, and we are ever so sorry for letting the bull escape.....

The host was not present but the rest of the staff were attentive. The whole experience is in between a B&B and a lodge: it has a homely feel, there are outings available but without the feeling of being 'herded' by the clock.

An absolute haven. Walking, riding, canoeing or just admiring the beauty of the Uruguayan land. The farm is home from home and Jonathan and the staff can't do enough for you. Great food and plenty of it. Total relaxation and recharging of batteries.

My family had a wonderful time here. The estancia is located in a very picturesque area with rolling rolling hills and rocky outcrops. There is a small lake on the property were you can fish or take out boats. Horse back riding is offered a couple times a day. For me the, the best part was just simply how relaxing it was there, muy tranquilo. We had clear nights and could see an amazing number of stars. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is very freindly and accomodating. If you are looking for an estancia, this is definitly worth checking out!

We love this place! We have been three times with visiting grandkids and once with a group of friends. It brings us peace ( the views and quietness are wonderful), but at the same time, we can do outdoor things, like horse ride, walk to the nearby lake to fish or use the canoes, use the pool in summer, get taken in the back of an old jeep to a beautiful waterfall, far away from anywhere, where the goats come to see who is invading their place! The food is always good, plentiful and one of the owners,Jamie, does a great job in the kitchen as he also uses vegetables from his home grown patch. You eat in the communal dining room with who ever is also staying there so you make friends with others from around the world. As it isnt a very big place, you never have too many people invading your privacy if that is what you are looking for. Jonathan, his brother, is the main face you will see there, always welcoming, willing to do things to suit you, at whatever time you want to do something. Both speak perfect English. The staff are fantastic and are very attentive when serving at the table or cleaning the rooms ((especially Mariana). Also Santiago, who looks after you when out horse riding, or when we were invited to help with farm activities, like collecting the cattle or vaccinating the sheep. The rooms are all different but comfortable and very clean.
The landscape is wonderful, appreciated by us but especially by others who come from abroad, with its undulating hills, birds and animals, including the ñandus (rheas) and carpinchos ( capybaras).
If you are looking for a typical estancia to stay in, we highly recommend this one as it has everything. We will be back!

Room Tip: There is a room which gives onto the central courtyard which is more basic, but very useful when you...

We had only two days at Aguila Blanca. They were delightful. Traveling with our six-year-old daughter, we were given a family "suite," not fancy, but big enough for a family twice our size. My daughter looked forward to riding horses, but she ended up falling in love with a litter of puppies in one of the out buildings. Jonathan, who was very prompt in answering my e-mailed questions, was away fishing at the time, but his mom, Pat, proved to be a charming hostess and a great companion for my non-Spanish-speaking wife and daughter. Jamie, the chef brother, managed to meet the needs of the two celiacs in the family easily. We enjoyed the comraderie with the other guests. We would visit again.

My wife and I stayed in December and had a fantastic time. Great landscape, food, people and horseriding. The 1000 hectare ranch is located in beautiful rolling terrain with a big lake. Jonathan and Jamie are brothers and run the estancia. Jonathan is a naturally friendly and charismatic host and Jamie is the magician in the kitchen, working up great meals. Santiago is the ranch´s hired hand and he is extremely friendly. Santiago will be the one taking you on horse rides or guided tour to the canyon area - waterfalls. We recommend a walk around the large lake which takes about 2 hours. You will see Carpincho and a lot of bird life, in addition to the usual cattle, sheep and horses. We also enjoyed watching the ranch dogs work with Santiago when moving cattle and sheep between grazing areas. I don´t think we were too much help since we are new to horseriding. We highly recommend Estancia Aguila Blanca

We stayed in August and had a really lovely time. Pat and Jonathan, who own and run the estancia were really friendly and welcoming and made us completely relaxed and at home. The food was really tasty and there was loads of it which we loved! It was really cold whilst we were there (winter) but the log fires kept us cosy and warm and we enjoyed the long walks around the estancia with the dogs in tow. The horseriding was a highlight too! In summary, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend.
