Moonlight Bay Hostel

Unless you must stay in Fajardo to get to Vieques or Culebra I wouldn't suggest staying here.

As far as the hostel goes, we got the feeling that we were begging them for a place to stay even though the hostel was booked and paid for. No one want's to feel like they are unwanted in a place, especially when they are paying to stay there.

They shouldn't advertise breakfast, because it's just pancakes on a griddle in a small, dirty kitchen. The rooms have NO ventilation and there were beer bottles underneath the bed.

As far as the staff goes, the tall, heavy guy and and the girl who works there seemed unhappy by our presence. I'm not sure why, as I have never seen them before. The girl even tried to remind us about "not taking towels", after giving us very dirty ones. Yet it seemed like a regular occurrence for them to sleep on the hallway couches and/or any unoccupied rooms.

While the rest of the staff was quite rude, the short guy with black hair was very nice and helpful.

Room Tip: If you're staying at this hostel just to get to Vieques or Culebra, simply go to the surf shop a...

This was really an excellent place to stay when you are spending most of your time in Puerto Rico traveling or on the beach anyway. Comfortable beds (really), warm showers, and clean accomodations were really all we wanted. Also only a 3 min walk to the Fajardo-Culebra, Fajardo-Vieques ferry station, and you really have to get there early (5am for the 9am ferry) to get tickets, so it helps to be only 3 min away... We ended up standing in line in shifts so some of the early folks went back to the hostel and went back to sleep after their shift... I would definitely recommend it - bathrooms are private and clean, off the main hallway, and because we were a big group and it wasn't too crowded, we had one room to ourselves!

This place is terrible!!! If you're interested in the ferries in Fajardo the idea of staying in a cheap and convenient place is attractive. However, this place is not it unless you are a regular visitor to crummy hostels then this place would fit right in.

The "free parking" was street parking outside. The "free breakfast" was literally the aunt Jemima pancake mix, syrup and coffee/ tea. The kitchenette was a toaster oven, fridge and an electric two burner stove top thing. The kitchen area was very small, it felt crowded with 3 people in there.

Previous reviews said it was clean. Again it depends on the other guest at the time. We were not that fortunate. There were dirty dishes left over night, the showers had towels left in and at one point there was no toilet paper in either bathroom. Also, there were beer bottles under our bed. They did laundry pretty late one night and the noise could be heard in our room making it hard to sleep.

The staff were rude and not helpful to me although I saw them chatting among themselves. When we left we literally gave the reception guy the key and he said nothing. It was not very welcoming, not clean, and not what I expected based on what was advertised. I'm not sure who those people are giving excellent reviews.

The new private room was offered to us at a very reasonable rate and we had a very pleasant stay. The staff present was friendly and helpful. We spent most of the night on the roof top chatting up with other residents. Overall a very pleasant experience. Thank you for hosting us at a short notice

Sam was fantastic--from coordinating our late arrival to giving us tips about the area and being an accomodating host. The hostel beds are comfortable, and the energy of the place is young, vibrant, and welcoming.

There is plenty of street parking outside of the hostel; it is in the residential area, and quite safe. We left our car there during our 4-day stay to Vieques and returned with no problems. The hostel itself is an easy walk to the ferry, and also about a 15 minute taxi ride to the airport that will take you to Vieques.

Cool hostel, super clean and super comfortable. Cool people and a great place to catch the ferry to Vieques or Culebra. Highly recoomend this place to young or old. I ended up playing poker and having a few drinks with a few guests and a few of the staff...oh how I miss cheap rum in PR : )

Room Tip: Book ahead if you can, especially during high season.

The hostel is brand-new and in a great location, within a 2 min walk to the ferry! I had a blast on the roof-top patio and met some really cool people. Every night they grill burgers and sell drinks on the patio. The beds are new and comfortable and everything is clean. The staff was great, especially the big guy, Chris. They hung out with us and were very helpful in giving us recommendations for local restaurants to eat at and they even helped us arrange a tour of the rain forest.
