Casa del Mar Scuba Diving
Reviewed December 8, 2014 via mobile

To celebrate my 40th we rented a private charter to take us from the el conquistador hotel. We stayed at the ritz. Arranged for a Mercedes bus to pick us up and take us to dive site. 10 of us. Got on the boat and took off for an adventure to culebra for scuba diving and snorkel. 2 tank dive and lunch served on the boat. Swam to private beach to enjoy some snorkel and sun. The music cranked on the boat all afternoon and after some tanning and dancing we got back to the ritz by 7. The crew were extremely accommodating. Tito a great scuba leader, jacky and Robert our captain were amazing. Loved the meal!!
Great party boat beautiful environment and scenery who could ask for anything more?

While Puerto Rico is not renowned as a dive destination- if you should find yourself there and feel the need to get your dive on, I can't say enough good things about the dive staff. The dive masters and boat captain did everything possible to ensure that we were resting and recreating- I go on several dive trips each year and seldom come across crews that rival their thoroughness and attention to detail. A special tip-of-the-hat to our dive guide, Omar!

We made our first trip to PR to dive and although the diving itself wasn't the best we've seen, the experience was awesome! Casa Del Mar is a class outfit. Many thanks to Carlitos and Roberto our captains, as well as Omar, Nick, and Tito, our dive guides! They were kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and provided for us the kind of service one would expect while on vacation -- they were fantastic! At some sites, the visibility was not any better than what we get in the Pacific Northwest however, sites such as Cayo Diablo, Spurs and Grooves (taking the route to the left), and Castle Rock displayed a beautiful reef with pretty coral and active life. We saw nurse sharks and for my first time, I saw several lion fish. Unfortunately we did not have a Hawaiian sling to snag them. If you decide to dive out of Fajardo and want an enjoyable and relaxing experience... then Casa Del Mar is definitely the outfit for you! Happy diving!!

We dove two days with Casa Del Mar. Two different experiences - First things first - When diving, we consider safety to be number one - and as it related to our dives, the team did a great job. Great briefings and good direction. On both dives, the dive masters seemed very good at what they did - Nick and Omar. When we were out with Nick, it was a small group and all certified divers so our dives are long and relaxing. The dive sites were nice - visibility is always up for grabs on the east coast of PR - and with the rains, viz - dropped to about 30 feet or so.

Omar - on our second day - was also a good dive master - A different leader for sure - where our dives with Nick were very slow and relaxing - with Omar, we were in a 'chase' (or so it seemed).

That being said, he seemed to take us to where there was some great marine life. He took us to a small boat that had sunk - where we found three lionfish - and then gave us the opportunity to 'cull the lionfish' population in PR.

So - from the perspective of the dive masters and the boats - I'd rate the team pretty high. So, the negatives - as a group (company?) they seem less than friendly and at times most just go through the motions with no appearance of expressing a welcoming feeling for those who dove with them. On the boats - the crew stayed on top and only interacted with the guests at 'pool open' and getting everyone back on the boat. They did offer fresh fruit and chips and salsa between the dives (nice touch!) and they had beer for the trip back after the 2nd dive - a first and also a nice way to end the boat dives

The dive shop - 'effective' but not the greatest in making you feel like your business and time with them were of significance (they're connected to the El Conquistador Resort - so perhaps they've become 'immune' to new guests?)

We had 5 of our adult children do a discover scuba event with them. They didn't really do an adequate job on some key points - for example - showing them how to equalize their ears. One of our DSDs struggled the entire time and finally about 1/2 through the dive (and a lot of pain) - he motioned to the DM about his ears and he was instructed under water on how to clear. I felt that for a PADI organization - these small things would be covered so everyone knew what to do. (even if it was in the DSD book).

All in all - an ok dive place. Not bad but not one that I would rush to dive with again (except the dive masters Omar and Nick - different styles but good at their jobs and worth diving with).

If you're in the area and don't want to drive to the other side of the island or want to change it up from the other boat in Farjardo - then use them - just be aware of the small things.

My family of five thoroughly enjoyed scuba diving and snorkeling! Omar and Melissa were wonderful. It is worth the money.
