Owner description: A bioluminescent lagoon, mangroves, coral reefs, dry forests, sandy and rocky beaches set between headlands—visit all these ecosystems in one place, the Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, in Fajardo. You’ll find one of our most frequented visitor centers here, and it’s only steps away from the best resorts in the area. You can take traditional, night and thematic tours from here—on bike, kayak or trolley—always in the company of a nature specialist who will show you everything about the ecosystems, landscapes and wildlife of the reserve, including the breathtaking view of the northeast tip of Puerto Rico from the top of the Fajardo Lighthouse. Multiple tours available by booking online. Spaces are limited, please reserve in advance online or by phone.

...Five years ago, we went to the bioluminescent bay at Las Cabezas de San Juan. Then, we did not have the time to visit the reserve. This time, our family group of 9 took the time to do so. I certainly would put this high on the list of places to see when visiting Puerto Rico. Everyone in our group spaning 70 + years enjoyed themselves. We took the English tour and had an excellent, friendly Puerto Rican guide who was knowledgeable, spoke good English and was quite passionate about preserving this part of Puerto Rico for the future.
...Each tour group is limited by the seating capacity of the trams that move you around. You must book in advance which we did with no trouble from the States. We received verification and all went smoothly. The trip was full which showed the necessity of pre-registering. We aslo found that we could get in to park no sooner than 30 minutes before our scheduled tour. The limited parking space dictates this. If you arrive early, you can visit a nearby beach or restaurant.
...The tour itself was well organized with the guide smoothly taking us from one place to another. The walking tour was nicely done over a wooden walkway that allowed you to get closup to the plants of the area. The guide did an excellent job of describing the various flora and fauna.
...The lighthouse tour was nicely done. A display in a dark room showing flourescent organisms gave at least a hint of what you would see at night when kayacking through the bioluminescent bay. From someone who has done this, you really have to experience it first hand to really appreciate it.
...There was nothing about the tour that I did not like. The views are spectacular. The way it is arranged, most anyone can take it. We had a 3 year old as well as a 76 year old and both survived quite well.
...This place is so easy to get to that anyone visiting Puerto Rico should consider taking the tour. Be sure to pre-register over the internet and enjoy yourself while learning a bit about the biology of Puerto Rico.

Very cool place. This is a ecological protected area in Fajardo. It is run by a not for profit organization. The tour includes a great informative session on the mangrove forests, the beach with broken coral all over. Some great example as of brain coral and fan coral just lying on the beach. The views from the light house were magnificent. The guide (leonora) was very knowledgeable.
The only hard part is making the reservations. Would recommend combining the 2 pm tour with the bio bay kayaking trip at sundown.

We made reservations via the internet and had a bit of trouble doing it. However the tour was most informative and the scenery is so beautiful, that it is worth the time to make the reservations.

We took the day tour (the English tour is offered at 2 pm). We had a crazy drive there - there was construction that led to a detour that had us making loops and missing the entrance of the nature reserve. I called the reserve and they very kindly stayed on the phone with me giving us very detailed directions (in English) until we arrived. We got there 15 minutes late and the tram had already left, but they gave us a ride in the security van to catch up which was very, very nice. So my first advise is to leave extra time to get there!

The only way to see the Reserve is by guided tour, so I definitely recommend the tour because the reserve was so beautiful. We walked through a mangrove forest, stopped at a rocky beach (so nice to see undeveloped views!), and went to the lighthouse which also had great views of the surrounding islands - we even saw St. Thomas! There wasn't really that much "tour" - we got info in the mangrove forest but were pretty much on our own on the beach and at the lighthouse. So the tour gets 3 stars, but the overall experience, and views, get 5 stars. I would recommend it! We did the biobay kayaking tour afterwards (also recommended), and the timing worked well to do the 2 pm Las Cabezas tour and then do the 5:30 kayaking tour.
