“2nd time here but not what it once was”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

This the 2nd stay I have had at El Conquistador. The first was 12 years ago. The first time I was here I thought it was amazing but it has definitely lost its luster. The hotel is in desperate need of renovations. For example the carpets in the hallways is very torn and stained. It's just not what you would expect from a Waldorf Astoria. That being said, the views are still amazing and it is a very nice place to vacation. The hotel restaurants are way overpriced but there are plenty of great restaurants nearby that you can go to for dinner. The other major change is that they have closed the casino and turned it into a game room so it is a much more family oriented resort.
My other complaint is the parking situation. To self park it is $15 a day. I think it should be free based on the size of the resort and you should be able to just swipe your room key to enter the lot. However you have to get a ticket and then every time you want to leave, you have to go to the parking desk and get it validated. It is a real pain. Overall our stay was fine but I don't think we would return.

Disgrace to the Hilton name! Rundown, bad service and very dangerous/pointy bed frames. I will never stay here again. I was here for a convention and all the people who were staying there all had complaints. The only good thing about the resort is the beautiful location. Also the restaurant is very expensive and awful food.

My husband and I brought our two kids (7 & 9) down to Puerto Rico for a week...What a fabulous vacation. The El Conquistador has everything a family could want - right on site! And if you want to get out an adventure, you are close to the rain forest (San Juan is a bit of a hike, I'd save it for another trip). We recommend staying in the newer (more recently renovated section of the hotel. The views are spectacular!
Our kids loved the water park and it was worth every penny!
While we were there, the sea was churned up, so the snorkeling wasn't great, but the equipment was readily available on Palomino Island. If you do spend time on Palomino, make sure to stay for a meal...you'll have lots of wild companions at your feet - a fave with the kids!

Room Tip: Stay in the newer wing "Las Olas" - Incredible views of Palomino Island, St Thomas, et al.

After coming here from a worst resort experience at Wyndham Rio Mar Grande resort, this was a totally opposite experience. The resort location is absolutely stunning. They have made optimal use of the hills so that the rooms get an unobstructed view of the ocean. Waking up to a view of sun rising from the ocean is a mesmerizing experience and since the resort is located on the east end of the island, you don't have to step out of your room to see the sunrise.
The water-park at the resort is mainly for kids. But it has lot of sun decks and coconut trees if you want to just relax. The resort doesn't get a beach on the main island but they have exclusive access to Palomino island which is just 20 minutes ferry ride from resort. We enjoyed the white sand beach and snorkeling on Palomino island. The beach and water at Palomino island is very clean and well maintained. Easy access to towels and ease of payments using the hotel card every place in resort makes your life at resort hasslefree. All you need to carry is a camera.. :)
The resort is away from San Juan city but it has a lot of small shops and about 20-odd restaurants / eateries so that you don't have to rush to the city for every small thing. The best thing is that these shops and restaurants do not try to extort money just because you are staying in the resort away from the city.
Overall, this was the best experience in Puerto Rico. We booked our package from Costco and for that price, it was worth every single penny spent...

Room Tip: Go for full Oceanview / ocean front rooms. They are definitely worth every penny spent!!

The resort was a huge disappointment. Upon arrival we were taken to a dirty room infested with ants in the bath and closet. We changed rooms. The next room was an improvement but overall, it was not what I expected from a Waldorf Astoria Resort. The carpet is stained and dirty and so is the furniture. I've passed the same garbage in the corridor for the past 2 days. No one has picked it up. The staff here just doesn't care.

I chose this resort based on the kids camp. It' Thanksgiving weekend and the camp has been closed. Are they kidding me? None of the scheduled activities start on time, if at all.

Not worth the money at all. Go someplace else. We could have gone anywhere and made a decision based on the reputation of Waldorf. I doubt the Hilton's would ever stay here...and would find it disgusting if they ever did.

We picked a perfect weekend to visit. It was the weekend before Thanksgiving and the hotel and resort was much less crowded than it would be in a few more weeks. I don't know that we would have enjoyed it had it been any busier either. The food was fine. Nothing extraordinary though. And although many folks comment the prices are high, I think it's very typical of vacation/resort locations. The service was great. Room cleaning service happened twice each day to make sure we didn't need anything additional, which was a nice-to-have. The island and boat ride over was amazing. AMAZING. That alone was the icing on our stay. We also went to the rain forest -- fun tour. The guide was fabulous.

Ever heard of bait and switch? We chose these accommodations over several others in the area because of the Waldorf Astoria name. The best way I can describe the resorts overall appearance is tired. I am sure it was a beautiful place in its time, but it is no longer its time. It looked much more like aging motel than the upscale resort we were expecting. Upon entering the room, a roach scattered across the floor, mosquitos were buzzing by, the smell of bleach in the bathroom was overpowering and the door would not latch without using a lot of force (swollen from moisture). There were several stains on the carpet and the couch looked like it came out of a college apartment because of wear and tear. All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the resort because of the beautiful setting, Palomino Island, good restaurants and it not being too crowed. But the facilities are in dire need of a remodel. New furniture, new carpet, and walls repaired and painted. You could walk down just about any hallway leading to rooms and the carpet was tattered and stained and you could see where many large holes in the walls (basketball size and larger) had been repaired and painted. Many areas need to be gutted down to the studs and remodeled. It also felt like many who worked there had given up and just did not care about providing a Waldorf Astoria experience. Trash was laying around in so many areas, lights were burned out, fixtures filled with dead bugs, cracks in the concrete, missing tiles, rotting wood and last but not least, a stray and injured (bloody) dog walked through the open air pizza restaurant while we were eating. Just not the classy experience we were expecting. It is very frustrating to expect a romantic few days away with my wife, without kids, anxious to experience a Waldorf Astoria quality resort and not coming anywhere near reaching those expectations. They are doing their brand a HUGE disservice by retaining the Waldorf Astoria name while the facilities are in such disrepair. With the Waldorf Astoria name, we were expecting "legendary Waldorf Astoria luxury and service in enchanting and vibrant Puerto Rico". Sadly, not the case
