Very nice location, surrounded by a beautiful golf course. We stayed at the ocean view room in the white building, not the downstair ones that you will need to take a funicular. Those downstair building will be far away from the parking lot. The resort has everything we want, water park, all types of restaurant and grocery stores. The best is the Palomino island where we enjoyed one lovely day there. Will definitely return sometime later. One con is that there was no guidance for how to park in the guest parking lot and how shuttle will run between the parking lot and front door (the resort is too big to walk from the parking lot to the buildings). The front desk staff also did not give very clear instruction on how to validate the parking ticket (for hotel guest you need to validate your parking ticket 15 minutes within your departure). Despite this everything is perfect. We will definitely come back.

We've stayed at this resort at least 4 times before, and found it to be exceptional. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. The rooms are musty and the pools are in need of a deep cleaning. It takes at least 15 minutes for valet service to deliver your car. Checkout process is outdated, you have to call for charges or pay at the reception desk. The water park has a couple of slides and a lazy pool, but is quite expensive for just these features. The restaurants overcharge for mediocre food.

Oh, El Conquistador.

I was told that this is the largest resort in Puerto Rico. I never got around to verifying that claim, but it is palatial -- lots of restaurants, multiple pools, thousands of rooms, a ferry to a private island owned by the hotel (a must see!), etc. While that is fine and dandy, it seemed like the place was so big that the little details were skipped.

Our room was on the side of cliff with a stunning view of the ocean. The room itself smelled kind of damp, which I guess isn't unreasonable considering the climate, but that was definitely a con. After reading earlier reviews from guests that reported insects and stains in their rooms, I immediately inspected the room to see if that would be true for me. It was. There was a mysterious dark smudge on the bathroom light switch and a long strand of hair in the refrigerator, which was, for some reason, placed in the bathroom. I also noticed stains on the headboards and chair in the room.

And then there was the food. The food on the resort is very average and overpriced. Cafe Caribe and Ballyhoo were okay, but your best bet is to eat out outside of the resort. I HIGHLY recommend La Estacion. YOU MUST GO THERE. THE FOOD IS INCREDIBLY GOOD. THE RED SNAPPER?!!!! ughhhh. Do yourself a favor and go there. It isn't far away from the resort. Other recommendations include Boricuba (really good prices), Pasion de fogo and Casavista. You can also just go into town and buy cheap local food. There are also chain restaurants around the resort if you aren't into Puerto Rican food.

When venturing off the grounds, ask for Manny, the taxi driver. He is a darling.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The grounds could be maintained a little better but you have to experience it for yourself. Oh, and because it's about 45 minutes away from San Juan, your nightlife activities are limited to the resort.

I might go back for a casual vacation with friends, but not if I am seeking a top notch, luxurious vacation.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

Room Tip: If you don't mind spending a little extra money, aim for a ocean view room. You won't regret it.

Did not meet expectations of a Waldorf Astoria resort. Food was 50/50 good/bad. Private beach, via ferry, was very rocky. Room amenities were lacking. Shopping was dismal. Transportation to/from airport excellent. Golf course appeared well groomed. Tennis courts were also well maintained. Security was excellent.

The entire property is massive and on a steep decline (both physically as well as in a grander sense of the word). Were it not for a handful of wonderful people (particularly those working at the Chops steakhouse) and for their private beach/island I would advise finding another place to stay. The general sense that one gets is that the staff just doesn't seem to care about the property. Windows on doors looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months if not years. Door handles on everything are filthy. Hallway windows to courtyards look to have never been cleaned. Hallways themselves appear not to have been mopped in years. Creepy parrots in lobby seem to serve no purpose. Somebody in a previous review mentioned a casino. Really? There's no casino here and there hasn't been one since 2007. Old tired video games your kids don't want to play yes. Casino no. You also get the sense that there are too few maintenance people for a property this large. I only saw one maintenance person the entire time we were there and he appeared to be working on replacing tile that, from what I could tell, did not appear in desperate need of repair. Focus on general painting and cleaning is sorely lacking. Rooms are ok but tired (why am I stepping two feet down into an ancient bathtub?) but the oceanfront views are wonderful. Palomino island is nice but expect a rough broken coral bottom which makes enjoying time in the water as well as getting in and out of the water difficult to impossible. Overall a property which needs more love. It could be great but just isn't and is sliding in the wrong direction.
