“Best kept secret in Puerto Rico”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a pricey resort, but one of the best Hotels in Puerto Rico. It is about an hour away from San Juan. It has an incredible Water Park for the entire Family and a private Island. When going to PR, this is the hotel I would recommend.

We are pleased to hear about your recent woderful stay with us. We certainly agree that the El Conquistador Resort is a great place for families to enjoy some leisure time together. With the water park, amazing golf, world-class spa, and of course, Palomino Island, the resort offers fun for all ages. We will welcome you back again soon....and thanks for sharing your "best kept secret"...we like when the word gets out.

Thank you,

This resort is set high on a hill and is divided into two levels. To get from one area to another you use a tram. Most of the resort amenities are located on the upper level so if your room is on the lower level you spend a lot of time commuting on the tram. This area is quieter and on the ocean although you cannot swim. The water park is located on this level as well as a small marina. There are also a couple of restaurants and shops. If you want to feel sand between your toes you have to take the tram to the lower level and catch a ferry to an island. It runs every hour. So you do spend a lot of time getting to where you want to go. The ferry ride is enjoyable and you get to see the resort from a different angle and the island is quite nice, although you don't have the convenience of running back and forth to your room. The rooms are spacious, a little sparsely decorated, with enormous bathrooms. The halls are dreary looking but the views are amazing. The pool areas are nice but I think in peak season they would be really crowded. Food was average and this resort is not all inclusive. There really aren't that many restaurants and I think it must be a challenge to accommodate everyone when the resort is full. We did the Bio Bay kayak tour at night and it was a lot of fun. Not much skill was required and the guides were great. We booked direct with the company and it was much cheaper. You get to the small town where the company is from the lower level through a gate to your left. It's a short walk and we felt safe at night. We also took a cab into a small town. 15 dollars each way to a grocery store, small Walmart and a couple of fast food restaurants. Not really worth the trip. I dont think I would go back to this resort because I prefer all inclusive and I would rather be somewhere that I can access the beach but for someone who prefers the pool this wouldn't be an issue

Room Tip: All the rooms have good views. It's probably quieter on the lower level of the resort near the...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and taking the time to write some thoughts about your most recent stay. The El Conquistador is not an All-Inclusive property and we are disappointed to hear that you were not satisifed with the dining quality or options. We have several dining options at the resort which allow guests to hopefully satisfy their dining desires. We certainly attempt to satisfy all different tastes. We understand if you choose to not return based on your individual tastes and expectations, but we would be love the opportunity to serve you in the future, if you do return.

We planned a flexible vacation and after staying here one night we extended our stay for a total of five nights. Our room came with a balcony that overlooked the pool, harbor, Palomino Island and the ocean. Great beds. Shops, drinks and restaurants are all pricey (it is a Waldorf Astoria after all) and since it is a resort, you have lots of families. However, the beauty is beyond compare. Stunning views. At night the coqui frogs sing you to your restaurant.

It is worth going to the Golden Door spa. Wonderful staff. My wife and I each got a massage and both masseuses were excellent (I think mine was named Charleen?).

Our rooms were a bit of a walk from everything which was great for us as it was generally quiet. At least it was until a family took the suite next to ours a few days in and were quite noisy at night at times but it was tolerable. For some bizarre reason, the toilet is next to the shower with no door. The bathroom sink, toilet, shower, closet are all one large area with no door. So there isn't a ton of privacy there but it is manageable; just odd. Our room was quite spacious and very comfortable and the housekeeping staff provided excellent service.

Palomino Island is definitely worth the short trip over. Sandy beaches. Snorkeling is good if you go out a ways. I actually saw an iguana at the Iguana Cafe. Btw, I had brought fins but had forgotten to replace the straps. The helpful folks at the Dive Shop let me borrow theirs for a couple of days. Kudos to them! Thank you!

Restaurant wise, I'll leave specific reviews but we ate at almost every place in the resort. Best value is probably Bella Vista for the pizzas or the Ballyhoo Bar and Grill. The best food is the Stingray Cafe but it's pricey.

My wife went on one dive but the visibility wasn't good. This was likely due to Hurricane Sandy and/or the time of year (October).

I will say that after about four days, we felt we had somewhat done everything to do at the resort (since we don't golf). We loved our stay but we were ready to see new places at the end.

We recently stayed here for 5 days for a conference and we had a wonderful time. This place was built in the late 1950's and has been upgraded continuously ever since. The landscape surrounding the hotel is very nice with great palms trees and lots of flowing shrubs. There are a couple of different pools to choose from and we chose the Marina Pool because our room was down in that area.
Our room was very nice with a great little patio overlooking the nicely maintained park down below and the sea on beyond. The bed was very comfortable and we slept late every day.
There are a few restaurants in the complex and we found the Strip House to be the best.
The service staff was very friendly and bent over backwards to help us whenever needed.
This is a great hotel for conventions, weddings and families.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the sea.

Just got back from a great weekend in Puerto Rico. Made the trip to check out El Conquistador for a possible wedding venue. I had seen reviews about unfriendly staff and service so was skeptical, and I was beyond blown away by the hospitality and friendliness of everyone! The staff was fantastic and completely made the whole experience! I am in the hospitality industry, so very critical of service, and big time kudos to the El Conquistador staff! You all were awesome. Anyone looking to plan a wedding, Yahaira Hernandez is amazing, and so helpful. Our room was fabulous, and looked right out over the ocean/resort/Palamino Island. The food on the resort exceeded my expectations as well, and prices were fair in my opinion. The best food in our opinion was at the big bar down by the marina. Great local Dorado(Mahi Mahi). My only complaint was that we couldn"t walk right out on the beach, you have to take the ferry to Palomino Island..which was beautiful, I think I just wanted to walk right out and have my feet in the sand. Overall, fantastic experience. Would definitely recommend ! Maybe try another month other than October? The resort felt a little empty..Thanks again El Conquistador..we had a fabulous time!

Room Tip: Try to get in Las Brisas wing...

My husband and I stayed here for a week as part of our honeymoon. The setting for this hotel is gorgeous with the most beautiful grounds and amazing beaches. The hotel's private island beach is absolutely stunning. We hope to come here again as a couple but also to one day bring our children as we think that this would be a great place for families too. The rooms were comfortable with lovely views. We loved opening our balcony doors to here the coquis calling at night. Pools were very nice as well. We highly recommend renting a car in San Juan so that you can go off-site to restaurants and sight-seeing, as well as stock up on supplies at the Walmart in Fajardo. The resort restaurant and shop prices are high, but nothing out of the ordinary for a resort.

I just stayed at this location. On the positive side it is a beautiful location. I travel for a living and the location is fantastic. Breathtaking views. The property is getting old and dirty. I couldnt believe how they are letting it go. The exterior walls are dirty and we noticed trash all over the place that was there for our entire stay. No pride in their upkeep. The service was horrible. The staff was nothing like at a Ritz. It was more like the staff at a fast food joint. Maybe they have problems staffing the place because miles away from the resort is slums. The staff was rude, actually eating food will working, didnt have the common manners a Hampton Inn staff would have. Food in the common areas was bad. We stayed in the "resort area" , Las Casitas and the room was dirty at check in. The beach they have is beautiful. If you are looking for luxury, look elsewhere, if you are looking for a amusement park staff and other patrons, you may like this place. It seemed like many young locals go there to party. Overall scene reminded me of a Carnival cruise ship/Spring Break. Last comment is positive.. the spa was very nice and the service there was top notch

Room Tip: go elsewhere
