This is one of those natural occurances that just baffle the mind! I would not recommend leaving Jamaica before you see this. It's almost magical the way it glows and then when you swim in the water and move around it gets warm as well. Unbelievably miraculous!!

“Incredible Phenomenon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2012

My hubby and I loved our experience swimming in the Luminous Lagoon with the dinoflaggelites -- an amazing phenomenon occurs when the fresh water of the Martha Brae river meets with the salt water ocean... anything swimming in it will cause these organisms to glow! You just can't wrap your brain around how that is happening. Very cool. We made the trek by rental car from Ochie to Glistening Waters in about an hour. Cost for the boatride/swim was $25 per person when purchased there, which includes a complimentary cup of [rum] punch from the bar. My husband had done it in Puerto Rico and loved it, and said this was just as cool from what he remembers there. We found out that this lagoon is one of 4 in the world (Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Bahamas and Jamaica). This one is supposedly the brightest of them all due to more consistent climate. For this excursion, you take a short 5 minute boat ride away from the harbor, watching the water start to light up from the boat's path. Then the captain lets you get out and swim for about 20 minutes. Another crazy-feeling is the WIERD silty compound on the bottom of the ocean floor, which is only about 3 or 4 feet deep, so you can touch bottom. It is gooshy, slimy and your foot never seems to totally stand flat (feels like it keeps sinking down), but it is smooth and doesn't stick to your feet. Just the strangest feeling. But, the captain did have life vests if you wanted to use that to help you float. After the swim, we took another quick 10 minute ride around the lagoon as the captain explained some info. about the area. To verify for those concerned about weather... it had rained most of the day for us on the day we went, but it was not raining when we swam. Our captain said, the rain pushes the organisms further to the bottom so you can't see them glow as much, BUT so long as it has stopped raining a mere 5 min. before, you will see the glowing dinoflaggelites just fine, as we did! If you are in the area, it's a must do rare experience with nature!! Bring your towel, which you can leave on the boat while you swim. There is also a restaurant and bar onsite for you to enjoy before or after your boat ride. Kid-friendly attraction (can stay on boat or swim!)

“Spectacular wonder of nature”

A "must see" place once you're in Jamaica. Glistening Waters is definitely a nighttime attraction.Admission to the place is $20 and that includes a free rum punch from the bar.The whole boat ride was about 45 minutes and full of great info from the captain plus he was a great entertainer.

“A Dream - Like Setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

This is a lovely location just by itself. But the magic starts after sunset as you board a passenger boat to take you out on the lagoon. Flickers of deep sky blue start trailing the boat and increase with any added motion. Getting into the lagoon is the best choice you can make, so make sure you wear a swimsuit. When you are in the water and turn, twist, or swim, you have a trail of color follow you as you go. It was fun and unexpected to get out of the lagoon, brush off the water, and see your swim suit and body light up as you move your hand. That part wasn't stated, and it was a great surprise.

“It depends on weather conditions”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

Because it depends on what kind of day it has been (hot/rainy/cloudy etc.) this was not worth the expense. It was an overcast day and rainy and this affected the water conditions. It really needs to be a hot, sunny day so at night time the water is warm and there is more light and colours. The tour company should be advising people of this. My advice is to wait until the day you plan to go to book it, and if it's a lousy day, skip it.
