“Fab Food”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

This lovely Rural Pub is a little hidden Gem just outside of Stowmarket, Still retaining it's oldie worldly feel with the beautiful Log fire and decor it is a great little place to eat, having visited now a handful of times I can say I have always found the Landlady very pleasant and helpful. Their Battered cod is to die for, served with chips and mushy peas it is a real belly buster, with a good range of food on offer to suit everyone I'd recommend a visit if you are passing by, I don't think you'd be disappointed .

“Good Local Food”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

As a regular at the Chestnut Horse I'd like to take this opportunity to express what a lovely atmosphere the pub has. You are not only greeted by cheerful friendly staff and smiling landlady Angela, but on a winters day a roaring log fire is there to warm you up and set a homely feel to the pub. The food is prepared on site, having sampled a fair few of the dishes offered, I can highly recommend the Fish Pie. The home cooked food is of a high standard with generous helpings, none of this pre-cooked nuked in a microwave food that is so readily being served these days. With local ales & Cider on offer, this is a pub that has to be visited, but if planning to dine, my advice would be to book first as it does get very busy during the lunch hours, your only disappointment will be failing to book a table.

“Very helpful staff but the roasts weren't great”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

The staff were really helpful in sorting out a large table for a group of us for Sunday lunch, despite a change in numbers at the last minute. They were very friendly and helpful throughout the meal, and made it very easy for us all to split the bill.

We were, however, slightly disappointed with the availability of the food. After placing our order we were told that there weren't enough beef roasts so a couple of people had to change their order to chicken instead. Our booking was at 13:00 so early enough that it was surprising for food to have run out.

The quality and quantity of the food wasn't great. I was one of the lucky ones who had the last of the beef, but there were only a couple of small pieces of meat on my plate which were very thin and gray - either very overcooked or frozen prior to cooking. Accompanying the meat was mashed potato (possibly Smash) and 2 roast potatoes. There were plenty of vegetables to share between people though, but just not enough on the plate to go with the veg.

“Poor roast dinner”
Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

Had roast beef dinner on Sunday here which was very poor. Very small amount of meat which looked like it had been frozen and warmed up. To very small roast potatoes and smash style mash with some veg. If you are after a good Sunday roast then give this place a miss. Friendly and helpful staff though.

“Good pub food”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

The food was good and the staff friendly - only downside was the size of the dining room is very small. Obviously not a lot can be done about that except extend it but I found it a bit cramped especially as there were 8 of us dining together.
