On the 17th of June (yes, on the Icelandic national holiday) we went on a glacier for a "walk" equipped with ice axes and crampons. It was really an exiting experience thanks to our charismatic guide Freyr Helgason, who knew really everything about ice. Thanks, Freyr.

If you have never been on a glacier before, the half-day tour with glacier guides is a great way to experience it. While we visited during the busiest day of the summer, our group had only nine, and were kept spaced apart on the Falljökull glacier. Equipped with ice axes, crampons, and helmets, our guide, Nick, showed us the various features on the hike up to the ice fall. While much of the hike was leisurely, he pushed the pace in the end to get us to a place for lunch (which was provided). While reasonable safety precautions were taken, this is not a hike for those incapable of, say, climbing 6 or 8 flights of stairs non-stop. After this refreshing climb, and a delicious lunch, Nick then made the sun come out for our first time in Iceland!

I took the glacier extreme tour in July 2013 and, thanks to our wonderful guide Gestur Thor, it was an adventure to always be remembered. Note, while this tour is called Extreme, most people in average shape will be capable of making the tour. If ice climbing is not your thing, you can still do this tour since the ice climb is a side activity, not something required to climb the glacier.

We started the day by hiking the glacier with another group but soon separated into the Extreme only group. The group was a smaller size (4 + our guide) which allowed for a more personal experience. We hiked much higher than the average groups, drank directly from pure glacier rivers (push ups required), and climbed some awesome ice walls.

What truly made this an awesome experience was our guide Gestur Thor. He is a natural teacher who taught us various techniques needed to safely traverse the glacier and climb the ice walls, and no matter how we performed, Gestur Thor made us feel like we had just accomplished an amazing feat (in a very genuine manner). As awesome as the tour itself was, it would not have been the same without our awesome guide.

If you have the time, I strongly advise taking the glacier extreme tour over any other glacier hike.

We tried to book the "Blue Ice, Black Sands" tour the day before but the website wouldn't let us. Instead we asked our guesthouse owner to call, and she managed to arrange for us to go on this tour. But if you would like to go on one of these tours, I suggest you book well in advance as the website doesn't appear to accept bookings for the next day.

However, we were very glad we persisted as the tour was excellent. We were fitted with crampons before leaving the Tourist Information area, and then transported to the glacier in a yellow school bus (which wasn't very comfortable for adults, but you're not going far!) We were split into two groups, so there were only about eight or ten of us with our guide, Iris, who was very knowledgable and interesting, and had that miraculous ability of a really god tour guide, of knowing exactly when to stop and talk to give everyone a breather.

We were guided through the moraine and up onto the glacier expertly and safely, and shown the wealth of different features that I didn't know existed on a glacier.

Afterwards, we found another schoolbus waiting for just the two of us from the glacier hike group. This was on its way to deliver another group to Jokulsarlon, but on the way it dropped us (with a packed lunch!) at a nearby birding spot where we joined another group, guided by an equally expert young Viking by the name of Aaron, to the big cape where Iceland was first settled, and where we saw a number of seabirds including puffins.

An excellent day, with interesting, varied activities.

A well planned walk and you could hire walking boots very reasonably. Super guide who made sure everyone had a great time and could do everything.
